  1. Why? It's a spring training game. Texas was using a DH the other night when the Cubs let Zambrano hit. The result of this game is meaningless. All that matters is getting your work in. Cubs pitchers need to see some at bats, and the White Sox need to get their DH out there. I agree and I don't have a problem with it either. It's ST games. This is a non-story really.. Beating the Sox is never a non-story. Dusty could be playing go fish with Ozzie, and it'd be a story. If it were anyone else, I wouldn't care about the DH. But since it's the Sox...let's not help them by letting them get their DH some work. Besides, this is REAL baseball. There are no DHs in REAL baseball.
  2. Basketball sucks only if you're a communist I believe personal attacks are against board rules. I have my personal opinion about basketball and you have yours, that doesn't mean you have the right to start calling me names. This is a baseball website last time I checked. take basketball somewhere else. I thought it was clearly obvious that it was meant as a joke, and not a personal attack. You would think that, you smelly pirate hooker. I am not a Pirate!
  3. Erstad's already slated to play CF. Or at the least him and Chone will share CF with Erstad also sharing 1B with Kotchman. I hadn't kept up with them this offseason. It's about time they planned on moving him. I've never heard of any team taking a gold glover at a premium defensive position and sticking them at 1B. That sounds like a move Bowden would make, it's always puzzled me why the Angels did it.
  4. If the Angels were smart, they'd go after him. If he could stick there, they wouldn't be wasting a gold glove center fielder at 1B. They could either move Erstad back to the OF, or trade him for a pretty decent return.

  6. Well like somone said the line didnt look to good, but he was throwing some good stuff. I think Guzman is ahead of him for the 5th starter. His curve and change were filthy. His fastball looked straight. The times he worked it down in the zone, he did well. He gave up some ropes on fastballs that he left up in the zone. I'd take Guzman or Marshall ahead of him as fifth starter, but I'd also have no qualms about using him out of the pen. Alot of the young pitchers have done quite well the last week or two. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm encouraged. I like the late ST success better than earlier, as there are more major league hitters later in camp. Guzman, Marshall, Hill, and Ryu have all thrown well lately.
  7. Home run? Yeah, what happened after JHJR flied out? Todd Walker grounded out to first base, and Aramis singled to left field. I was thinking like otis89, thinking he hit a HR or something. No audio here...

  9. The Cubs won't open with 12 pitchers ? This is the first year I can recall them going with 11 pitchers and 14 position players. Maybe with the stronger bullpen (Williamson, Howry, and Eyre) they don't see the need for an extra arm. I've always thought they should go with 11 pitchers and 14 position players. It's possible they'll start off that way, then add an extra bullpen arm when the injured starters come back because of concerns over how deep they'll be ready to go. If they won't use the 5th starter for a couple of weeks, then the 5th starter can double as a 7th BP arm until we go to the normal 5 man rotation. Breaking with 12 pitchers would essentially be 8 bullpen arms the first two weeks.
  10. Agreed. That's all Neifi should ever do. However, if we're playing against a pitcher that Neifi has completely dominated in his career, I have no problem with him starting and giving Cedeno a rest. Agreed. Let's highlight Neifi against only pitchers he has historically killed, so we can raise is trade value
  11. As bad as our offense might be, it's improved over last year's disaster. For starters, we shouldn't be seeing Corey and Neifi ahead of DLee and Aramis in the lineup. Any combination of Pierre/Hairston/TWalk/Murton at the top of the lineup is a MASSIVE improvement in OBP in the one and two holes of the lineup from last year. As much as I didn't like the Jones signing, he's likely to do better than Burnitz. Murton will be better than Holla/Dubose were last year in LF too. No way we score 20-40 runs less than last year. I'd say more like 20-40 more than last year (which still isn't great).
  12. I called it. I was telling my dad how if we didn't re-sign lee, this would be a GREAT 1B to have in a year or so. Otherwise he is going to make a great trading chip if lee resigns. I told him, watch this guy get a hit. I swear this guy is good. And then he won the game for us. It's too bad we have lee. I am developing a mad mancrush on Sing! He can play some OF too. I wouldn't mind seeing him get some platoon time with Jones, who has been absolutely horrible since his first hot week or so to begin ST. I'm really worried about Jones...
  13. I never said he's a bad influence, I said I'm tired of his mouth. It seems every time there's a quote in the papers, it's from ol' Todd. Your opinion is worth more when you don't offer it every day. And while he shouldn't flat lie if the team is performing badly, saying we flat out suck can rub some players the wrong way who feel they are putting in 100% effort. You did say he has a bad attitude. What exactly has he said to back that up? What specifically has he been saying that you're so intolerably tired of hearing?
  14. What attitude? What attitude? He has a big, fat mouth, and has been traded numerous times. examples of things he's said that backs up the bad attitude claim?
  15. I've seen numerous articles over the years where some of Maddux's more accomplished former teammates have stated he's helped them alot with various things, including pitches, pitching strategy, and even mechanics. One good example would be Tom Glavine.
  16. past few years? he was signed as a backup for in 2004 - how on earth would that contribute to the team's evaluation? it sure seems like you're just saying the ONE freak injury last year with carlos lee has effected the two years walker has been a cub. Walker likely is not a 150+ game a year guy anymore. The regression is longer than CubDad4Ever states. He played in 155 games in '02, to 144 in '03, to 121 in '04 (okay, he wasa backup that year, but if I recall correctly, he did have a brief DL appearance that year), then played 110 games last year, with another DL appearance. I wouldn't call it a sure thing that he can't handle a whole season anymore, but I sure as heck wouldn't bet that he could either. I think there's reasonable doubt that he can do it in any given year from here on out.
  17. The last time I checked it wasn't too good. I think he was hitting in the low 200s. But ST numbers don't really mean the much. Corey is hitting .250/.286/.365 with 1 home run and 8 strikeouts in 52 at bats. It makes me happy to hear this. I hope he does well. The better our "castoffs" perform after we trade them off, the more likely we are to get something useful in return in the future. However, if our castoffs routinely do well after we get rid of them, then that should be considered like a screaming indictment of our coaching at the major league level.
  18. I wouldn't mind Hairston getting the fulltime 2b. I'd prefer to keep Walker, but I don't think we're loosing all that much going to Hairston, not enough to significantly impact the season. Maybe a Walker for Wilson swap? I think Wilson could help us more as a 4th OF/Platoon partner for the Frenchman, and that help would be more than the dropoff from TWalk to Hairston. Make both clubs happy.
  19. nevermind, found my own answer. We didn't even trade for him, we purchased his contract from the Mets. If he turns out to be pretty good, Hendry would really have pulled one over on Minaya.
  20. Which trade was he involved in? I can't recall who we gave up for him, but I don't think it was anyone noteworthy. If he does progress into a pretty good major leaguer, this could be chalked up as another fleecing for Hendry.
  21. Personally, I wouldn't worry about the arby clock unless you're talking about someone who is as likely to reach super-stardom as they come, like Prior was in '01. I have high hopes for Ryu or Marshall, but they're not going to approach the big bucks anywhere near the quickness that Prior or Wood did.
  22. Then he's got to live with the consequences. The CBA dictates that players after signing their first contract and before free agency don't have a say in where they play or what position they play. And so does Bowden. The whole situation is a disaster. Not for everyone. I'm glad this is happening to another NL team. Although, I'd be happier if it were Jocketty in the middle of this dilemma instaed of Bowden, if you know what I mean. But then again, Jocketty's smart enough not to get into this kind of situation.
  23. Just think...they gave up BWilk and Sledge for this guy. Nats got ripped off, royally...
  24. Why not AAA? Well, if there are any lingering concerns about his shoulder stiffening up (or forearm or any other body part), he certainly better off starting in the southern league than in Iowa. By that logic, then why not Daytona?
  25. What's the over/under on one of the coming up and going back down before Prior makes his first start?
