  1. The problems are: This would be the prime year to trade him- 1 year plus on his current deal/control. We can get the best haul if he continues to perform. However it will leave us with large hole in the ML rotation. outside of an ivory situation to a contender, I don't a team trading a pitcher with similar potential who is near ready for him…and that's what we need, but we could also use additional assets. So if we dealt him, we are probably looking at a few big arm/ big potential guys that are AA or lower.(obviously..the higher the level, the fewer the players involved. Which means we are delayed from contending a little longer. We could say we are going to sign a big name, but they have to want to sign here also. On the other hand, if we can not get a deal in place with him, we need to move him. There is no doubt that with what we have on hand, we will have trade some assets for pitching. I would rather not include Shark in those trades but if he isn't going to be here, we have to maximize his value/our assets- which means trade him sooner rather than later.
  2. At his best he was on base 250 times in 158 games. I think we can use that. He had OB% OF over .340, which we could certainly use. I said this earlier I blame Sveum for a lot of this. He never hit Castro in the spot he had his best stats, lead-off. He also batted him toward the bottom of the lineup more than any other manager, with no one to protect him. Every pitcher that faced him new there was no one behind him, why give him anything? He certainly seemed to chase more pitches than I ever remember before. I really expect his offense to bounce back to near his norms. His defense will probably only determine who is the shortstop and who is moved. I still think they way he gets a drop on pop ups, he could be a great center fielder if moved. I just look at our stats, see castro and rizzo leading everything, and think it's a good thing!
  3. maybe this is a dumb question but why is it a problem if he doesn't hit pitches that are out of the zone well?
  4. last year part if his problem, and possibly why his peripherals looked ok, is that he can not hit a spot. When your entire defense is shifted because of a tendency and you continue throw pitches against that tendency, you will give up more hits than normal. He is the one starter who misses badly. I know it's hard to quantify how many and how badly you miss spots but just watching him pitch, you can this happens way too much. That and I think he doesn't have the stuff to overcome some of those short comings anymore. I know with the Sox he was hitting 98, which is why they were toying with making him a closer before they dealt him.
  5. there is no flipping' unwritten rule about taking the first pitch if the game….
  6. Maybe over Villanueva not Jackson, they won't make that move with Jackson unless he is Danny Jackson bad. Oh, I agree, we have to try to find something there and as long as we are bad it really doesn't matter. I was just kind of throwing that out there because it was said that they couldn't think of 5 starters (with wood, shark, arrieta and hammels) he would want to pitch until hendricks was ready...
  7. Bonifacio .500. Last year Castillo led all qualifiers with a .347 BABIP. The Cubs as a team were dead last in BABIP in 2013 Don't you think a lot of that was because we had some really bad hitters.
  8. doesn't Russin deserve some shot with what he did at ST and mopping up last night. He may prove to be just as bad, but it sure looks like we know exactly what we have in Jackson and Villanueva.
  9. he was darn good last year until his arm fell off because he had to pitch everyday because we had no one else. He had a sub1.00 era through may, and was still hanging in the mid 2's(2.66) in mid august before ballooning the last month. He was all we had out there for quite a while last year. I don't get some of you guys. I mean you were all fired up about getting Wright (with his career4.40 era), when even last year=which was his best year, he was worst than Russell was even after his drop. I said it last year also, but there is a lot of unknown with our bullpen. It really shouldn't shock anyone that they're bad. There is a reason that they were all basically cut lose from other teams. I have hope for Strop, I think that Veras can be a stop gap and maybe trade bait for 1 year but he is not a closer on a good team. I worry Russell is done, and I have no faith in Wright. I think we are set for another roller(rolley?) coaster ride this season. On the other hand must of those guys won't be here lone, and Wood looked good, Rizzo and Castro also played well. I have to say it is fun to watch Castro play this way again!
  10. Yeah, because of the schedule... well being mediocre and then also playing a rough schedule on top of it. On paper there isn't series you would say we should win in the month of April. You might be able to call a split with Arizona because we are at home, and their pitching is struggling big time. We might be lucky to get 10 wins.
  11. We need to leave carlos in the rotation for April, he has some silly splits for the month over the last few seasons.
  12. I'm so glad all our good prospects are hitters. They say that very soon more pitchers will have had, that those who have not..
  13. our wives aren't shallow, materialistic gold-diggers :-" I spent a bit more but I am a school teacher. However, after almost 20 years of marriage we realize how inconsequential the cost of the ring and also the wedding reception are… If we had it to over, we would have eloped and had a band with a chip. For the record I did choose the cheapest men's ring
  14. why stop there? 6 years/30 mil sounds good. The only value signing him to even a 2 year deal is that he wouldn't be a 2 month rental for whoever we trade with. BUT I think he may have more value because he isn't signed past this year. I have to believe that any contender that would trade for him has a better long term option but have had an injury or some set back.
  15. well, you know prices are rising quickly….that may look like a bargain at the end of 6 seasons! Bonifacio is a nice player. He is an upgrade. He could certainly be helpful for the next 3 seasons while different kids become major league ready. That being said, I have to believe his greatest value to the long term outlook of this team is to play like he is capable (.320 ob%, maybe a 2 war) and trade him at the deadline when a contender has a short term need. Could he fit in on this team when all the young guys are here, certainly. He plays a ton of positions, and he is a switch hitter. I think the bottom line is we don't have much to cheer about other than Emilio.
  16. The hard part is we have so little margin for error. With our offense, I don't see us having large leads very often in games, so every save chance will be tight. I also don't see us having tons of chances to get wins, so every one is magnified. we have had 2 save chances, blown one in ugly fashion… No excuses for Veras, he has been awful and has to be better. Beyond that our bullpen will be under tremendous pressure all season, it looks like almost every time they come in it will be in a tight game, where a hit or run is huge.
  17. scary to run him back out there if it's a close one. I guess they'll try to get him some spots that don't matter like marmot. He has to be better than this. Last year he was awesome but he was tragic either...
  18. did a search..yes, there is a little action on Will, most of it is either making fun of him, or the cubs for having on
  19. booth is talking about the twitter love for George Will. I'm not buying it, any activity has got to be of the negative variety
  20. good start to the "clark the cub era" http://www.sbnation.com/lookit/2014/4/6/5587510/cubs-mascot-gets-head-taken-off-punches-guy I'm guessing this wasn't part of the plan.
  21. I think its a toss up on OK numbers. The problem is that you could have ok looking numbers(as far as LOB) because no one is on base. For both the Sox and Cubs, the problem isn't necessarily that they don't hit with RISP, it's that they don't hit period. If your lineup is loaded with sub .250 hitters, you can't expect that more success is going to come when runners are on.
  22. I was thinking the same thing but on the other hand, we had 8 hits at the to of lineup and didn't score. Hopefully they are moving Castro to maybe get some production. of course the problem is he has been terrible in his career when hitting down the order with no protection- I think he was below.200 ob% down there last season...
  23. undefeated when Baker starts! Baker=key to 2014
  24. excellent point…kind of the whole chicken vs egg discussion?
