  1. You realize we have 1 more win than Miami now. Could be a big show down this weekend... of course their payroll is about what we pay Soriano and Jackson.
  2. Pretty sure the manager doesn't send anyone down. There aren't a whole lot of people he could be talking about and I would think sitting them down would come first. Also, I would also have to guess that this has been done face to face long before this became public. Lot of frustration i'm sure.
  3. Hawks and White Sox both on CSN, WGN would rather show something called "Nikita" and a rerun of something called "Oh Sit!" instead. WGN is absolutely dead in the water if they don't win at least a partial Cubs' TV contract post-'14, aren't they? If they do not have the Cubs broadcasts do you know how many tv providers drop them from their packages? at the very least they are dropping what they pay to have the channel. Around here the Cubs are the only reason people make sure WGN is in their tv package.
  4. It would be nice if he were more than a back end guy. If he could fill in behind samardzija for the next few years it would certainly help our free agent needs down the road.
  5. Agree, my only worry is as our last few bats heat up, our pitching is bound to drop off some. We know what we will get from Samardzija. I feel good about Villanueva continuing at a good clip..probably not sub .100 era, but under 4.00. My main worry is Wood. I hope this is his turning point but he has been so up and down, showing flashes of brilliance and then mediocrity. Jackson is going to be Jackson. He is a mid .400 era guy for a substantial career. He does not hit spots like Villanueva, so I don't think he'll get the defensive bump that he could. They key to a pretty solid staff is Wood and then the health of Garza and Baker. That will make up for any lack of offense that this team will have. Heck, we could be greedy and have everyone work out, trade 2 of them and still send out 5 decent arms.
  6. I agree, and I think some of the decisions on deals may depend on who is developing for us. If Jackson, Sweeney look close it's easier to move Hairston/Schierholtz. Same with Barney. I think Villanueva will be solid all year, not sure he'll keep up his Cy Young candidacy but it would be great if Wood is consistent all year. A healthy Garza is dealt. He's at the end of the deal, and he could get some serious value. It would also allow Baker to step in, and we can see if he rebounds, which we give even more flexibility for trades in the rotation.
  7. DeJesus trade value is what we should be exploring. And here's to hoping that Schierholtz can have a DeRosa-esque breakout and we cash him in July or the Winter. i don't imagine we'd get much for Schierholtz in a trade this winter If he hits .350 with 22 hrs, 88 rbi's and 1.000+ ops we will :D
  8. Well we had 1 and a half last year. We hopefully have Baker coming back at some point, Samardzija, Feldman and Jackson. However, keeping in mind it's early, a rotation of Samardzija, Garza, Wood, Villanueva and Jackson is very, very interesting.
  9. Wood is under club control through 2016, and Villanueva has another cheap year on his contract. Good for us, but it also adds value in a trade as the "new" club would have to give more value than a "rental" player. As much as it would hurt to deal any and everyone again, we could be in a prime situation as one of the few teams who are sellers that actually have pieces people need. I gotta believe that if Garza shows health, he's gone long before the deadline, probably before July.
  10. With many contenders struggling with pitching already, how soon until there are calls for Villanueva and Wood?
  11. get this in! we need the W and these guys need those stats...if just to up the confidence!
  12. yea, Barney helps a little on D...that was a big time play.
  13. How's it look for today? any chance at all The good lord would never disrupt the best game of our lives....
  14. We need more people signed up. I 'm stuck starting threads in Class A, Daytona. Plus if I started one, half the people would automatically say I'm wrong.
  15. will gregg wear his stupid goggle/glass things...
  16. Good to see sweetpeaman was able to make his scheduled start, a little worried about injuries to the thread starting staff!
  17. If you were in that area would you spend one dime to go to that stadium. If that's done in a private sector, someone would be in jail.
  18. Neither of them have played organized baseball in quite some time. I don't think signing either would be a very good idea. no organized ball? sounds like a good fit for this roster.
  19. seriously asking...when do you see this happening? I am very worried it's closer to 2016, not 2015 even. It just seems like everything we need to happen is going slower than expected. After Arizona fall and spring training I thought we had Lake, Baez and Soler pretty close to be ready. With guys like Sappelt and Rizzo struggling, Jackson not showing much change, Vitters and Lake not playing much it seems further away than ever. I knew this season was going to rough, but I think the struggling prospects is much worse. I know it's early but for future prospects it probably couldn't be a worse start. I guess I'll just hang onto Samardzija, and the hope that Schierholtz and Wood continue their play.
  20. heard there was some elbow tendonitis......
  21. Story of this board in a nutshell.
  22. Even I agree. I have no faith that Stewart will work out but somewhere down deep I just hope that getting surgery this time is the needed fix and he can be decent. This is one spot on our roster that there just isn't much help for. Stewart is lottery ticket, but maybe not a powerball..in that he won't have the huge payout but it also isn't that astronomical of odds. Seriously, as sad as it sounds, if he can just hit .230, with his usual obp, and slugging, it would be such an upgrade over what we trot out there now, or last year. I just don't know if he can or if he will stay healthy. some hope is better than none. We know what valbuena will bring, there is no upside. Even with his obp right now, I have a sneaky suspicion that if he was followed by anyone in the order other than Lillibridge or the pitcher, he would never walk or at least a whole lot less.
  23. Are we supposed to pretend we didn't already know this roster sucked before the season started? Jersey the problem is there were more than a few that really thought we were decent. Remember the talk of 80+ wins, and being in the race come july..will we go get players? Our starting pitching has a good shot to be very solid to good but I tried to explain to people that we had darn good starting pitching last year until Aug 1, and we were still on a pace to win only 66 games (dempster and Maholm were pretty awesome). So even improved, the difference in wins might not be there. People also tried to discount the start that LaHair had. he has a great april, a HOF april, and even though Rizzo is better, you can't discount what Lahair did early on. So even though our offense may be slightly better, it still might not translate to more wins. It's not a good roster. Any improvement as far as wins goes will come from our starting pitching keeping us close in games.
  24. Last night brought me to a similar question. We spent all off season worrying about a RH infield platoon, especially a corner guy who could spell Rizzo against really tough lefties occasionally. We find lillibridge and Gonzales, then I hear that Baker signed a late minor league deal with texas and made the club in spring training. Now Baker is no long term answer but he hits lefties. He would have been cheap, and he is another bat off the bench when not platooning. Heck, we even got something in trade at the deadline last year, so we could do it again this year. Certainly we could have done without one of the little guys, or clevenger (since he is a lefty bat, we have that covered at every spot-1b,3b and c). It's just aggravating that his #1 skill- hitting lefties, is something that we seriously lack on this roster
