    Should the Cubs un-retire Ryno's number and take the flag down if he gets the Cardinal job? ;) For beating the Cards during his playing career and destroying the franchise with a managerial career? I'd build him a statue. I'm talking about the moment the press conference begins and he puts on the jersey. Just wait... If the cards get off to a slow start, whenever Ryne makes a questionable move the Cards fans will cry that he's a spy sent from the Cubs to destroy them from within. Oh God I hope so.

    Wut. What is your source for this "try him as a starter" noise? I've seen it in a couple of places that he's been told to prep over the winter to try out as a starter this spring. As I think through it, I believe it's all been through email with various people, though. Pretty reliable people, though. That's pretty awesome. I hadn't even considered it lately. Could be a very high reward to that little risk.

    I think this is fairly accurate. I have to swim upstream on LaRussa. I like him. He's fiery, competitive, and all he ever does is win, wherever he manages. WTH is not to like? You don't have to like him personally, but I highly admire his body of work, and would love to have a guy who gets his type of results manage the Cubs. It's very obvious to me that you missed this post:

    The more I think about it, the more likely I think we are to take a flier out on Sizemore. Maybe we could keep him at a corner and have him split time with any of Jackson, Soriano or Byrd to get him healthy? This has Theo written all over it.

    I don't understand how you can expect anything better. Hell, I don't know how you could expect anything that good. That's a steal. Limited market for 1bmen, and I don't think the rest of the league is as dismissive of his worrisome 2011 as some Cubs fans are. The Cardinals are offering $22.5 million AAV. Jumping from that to $30 million is Tom Hicksing yourself, even if you get to take a few years off the end. If you subscribe to the 1 WAR = $5 mil theory, he's an excellent bet to exceed the proposed $30 million AAV for the first 3-4 years. I think you're greatly understating the value of "taking a few years off the end." I would rather not commit Theo's sin of paying for past performance in years 7-10 or whatever. Rather pay him what he's worth when he's worth it; needless to say, that means happily upping the AAV.
