  1. Yea, and I don't think it even took that much hindsight benefit to say some of those deals were bad as they were handed out. Bowman showed way too much loyalty to his guys. Either extending them or reacquiring them. There was no way to predict Seabrook's decline being so steep...in that sense you can extend some of the blame beyond Bowman/Q to players like him for not playing to their expected, much less peak level. It would have taken a lot to let him go (see this article, though it's behind a paywall so might have to incognito it: https://faxesfromuncledale.com/how-not-to-write-about-the-hawks-elimination/) Crawford is the 8th highest paid goalie in the NHL right now. No one could have known he was going to miss 60something games with some mysterious head injury, but his contract isn't the issue. The Bickell contract, sure, though Teuvo Teravainen isn't making this team a contender (and Scott Darling definitely isn't). Danault would look great in a Hawks uniform, but it took deadline deals to get us over the top in 2015, so I'm not going to be too mad about going that route again in 2016.
  2. Yeah you can point out plenty of flaws for both Q and Bowman, especially over the last couple years, but I think the reality is this is pretty much an inevitably for a cap league dynasty team. You get as much success as you can out of your group of players, and then you are left with bloated contracts with money being paid for past performance. We got three of them, not going to complain about the downside of the slope.
  3. You can my word vomit above, but this sums up my opinion a lot better: [tweet] [/tweet]
  4. It's hard to talk about coaching without sounding too much like a meatball sports fan, but...I'm fine with it. This team has all the motivation/veteran leadership they need sitting in the locker room already. What they need is someone to teach these fringe-y young players how to develop into reliable NHL players. At this point in Q's career, I can't really see that being up his alley, both in terms of his skill set and his interest level. Whether it actually accomplishes anything in the short term...probably not. The team stinks (and some of that/a lot of that falls on Bowman, who made the decision today). But I guess it's worth a shot. I'm willing to bet this came with the blessing, either implicit or explicit, of Toews, Keith, etc.
  5. If this was a pure salary dump why wasn't it Kintzler or Duensing?
  6. Smyly is a...relatively valuable piece to giving to a team who we just saved $6m. Possible middle infielder incoming?
  7. Without a doubt. talk like this is going to horsefeathers around and make me root for the brewers 100% agreed. Assuming a team is cheating because they get hot for a month and get some BABIP luck is not a fun version of baseball.
  8. While I definitely agree with the philosophy, that's not exactly an inspiring list of teams in that bottom 5.
  9. Agreed on all of this, but also adding that I don't expect him to come in and be some savior for the team, because that was never really his thing to begin with, and our defense is complete trash right now, and it's going to be painful to watch the reactions to this comeback as he shakes off his rust and plays behind a team that isn't nearly as good as the teams he's been playing behind the rest of his career.
  10. It's a little sad how much better these teams look than we did most of the second half. There's like 7 relievers in this game who would have been our best pen guy.
  11. Bryant’s better or they are about the same assuming Bryant is healthy Then give me the cocky, outspoken one. (Though if Bryant gets us Harper, that’s fine too)
  12. Roberto Osuna is prone to bouts of hitting people. Who knew?
  13. (Quietly) how much more would we have to give up with Kris Bryant to get Bregman
  14. And here I thought his last moment would have been walking off Wrigley Field after basically completing the Cardinals collapse and ensuring their elimination. Ah well...always next year. Just kidding, there's no way he'll make that far.
  15. I've got a friend of a friend (etc) with connections and heard a similar rumor...after the 2016 MVP season, 8 years/200m. So basically the last four years, plus the first four.
  16. Most importantly, they still have to live in Cleveland. Well there's Great Lakes Brewing plus the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... Had friends that lived in Cleveland during college. Visited them for a weekend, spent the day at Great Lakes, had a great time. Went back the next year, asked what the plans were. "Well...how about Great Lakes?"
  17. Yeah, I think we need to focus on someone who can play both middle infield positions but is more than just a 'backup'. Zobrist is going to be 38 next year, and with the way Baez plays, he's far from a lock to stay healthy. It doesn't seem like Happ is an option at second anymore, which means we're suddenly pretty thin.
  18. I don't know guys, this thread turning into a thread about a show that started off promising, then quickly developing some flaws you could look past, and then eventually developing some terrible, unforgivable flaws that made everyone quit on said show feels like a nice little conclusion here.
  19. Yeah that lineup is pretty Joe-proof. The most likely way he'll screw it up is if Zobrist goes back to 2017 (or just being 38 years old in general) and Maddon inevitably keeps throwing him up at the top.
  20. I think Caratini's potential offensive upside is definitely better than any of the FA catchers out there, but I'm not as sold on his defensive/framing abilities. Overall to your point, he's cheap, he's fine, whatever...focus on the bigger issues.
  21. For as thin as the bullpen was stretched last year, do you really want to give two 'bullpen' spots to guys who are locked in to only pitching every 5 days?
  22. The 'obviously' at the end horsefeathering kills me.
  23. Committed pretty strongly to Joe next year, and their relationship (spoke out against the Atlantic article this morning). When asked about the coaches: "Haven't gotten to that point yet."
  24. This doesn't really factor much into our plans per se, outside of luxury tax implications, but it just occurred to me that KB's arbitration number is going to be pretty interesting based on his performance this year. Has anyone ever gone down in salary from A1 to A2?
