  1. Their top 12 was: 1. Vladimir Guerrero Jr 2. Forrest Whitley 3. Christian Pache 4. Jazz Chisholm 5. Keston Hiura 6. Luis Robert 7. Taylor Trammell 8. Carter Kieboom 9. JB Bukauskas 10. Jon Duplantier 11. Nate Pearson 12. Peter Alonso
  2. BA had a top 12 AFL prospects list. Nico didn’t make it for some reason (come on, I’d rather have Nico than Peter Alonso) but he did make the AFL Prospects on the Rise list: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/top-mlb-prospects-at-the-2018-arizona-fall-league/
  3. Cubs get: Rowan Wick, RHP San Diego gets: Jason Vosler, 3B Wick is a capable, generic middle reliever. He works 93-96, has an above-average slider, and a change-of-pace curveball. Vosler is a an extreme fly ball hitter (over 50%) with huge platoon splits. He might be just a 30 bat, but Vosler can play third and first and he crushes lefties; I think he’s a corner bench bat or platoon player.
  4. Spangenberg hasn't really put it together but he can play multiple positions and has some speed and pop so I don't imagine he'll make it through waivers. I would be happy if we replaced Seal Boy with Spangenberg. You lose some contact but gain some everything else. Spangenberg was a Hoyer/McLeod pick too. Dietrich would be a nice pick up too.
  5. Kieran Lovegrove is a minor league free agent and the Cubs should sign him. I have more faith in him as a late inning reliever than Dillon Maples.
  6. BA has their Cubs draft grades: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/chicago-cubs-2018-mlb-draft-grades/ Best Pure Hitter: Cole Roederer and Nico Hoerner Best Power: Luke Reynolds, then Brennen Davis Fastest Baserunner: Edmond Americaan, then DJ Artis just slightly behind Best Defensive Player: Andy Weber Best Athlete: Brennen Davis Best Fastball: Riley Thompson Best Secondary Pitch: Paul Richan's slider Best Pro Debut: Cole Roederer (might have been Nico Hoerner if not for his injury) Most Intriguing Background: Andy Weber (both parents are violinists) and Brennen Davis (owns two pet goats named Marco and Polo) Best Late-Round Pick: Edmond Americaan The Ones Who Got Away: Mitchell Parker (28th round) and Tyler Ras (33)
  7. KW 2:03 What's currently keeping you from hanging a 50 FV on Nico Hoerner? Would you need to see more power out of his bat to justify him inevitably moving to 2B? Eric A Longenhagen 2:03 He might move up when we do the Cubs list The power he's shown here in AZ has been surprising
  8. Hoerner is batting second at short, Giambrone is batting third and playing third and Higgins is catching and batting 8th. The game is about to start.
  9. Today’s Mesa game will be on MLB Network at 7 pm CT. I hope we get some more Nico action.
  10. On Erick Leal’s strong AFL: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/erick-leal-makes-it-5-straight-scoreless-starts-in-afl/
  11. Morosi's column this morning literally mentioned us being more enamored with future FA classes, and brought up Arenado specifically. horsefeathers, this is the "excuse" they're gonna run with? The Cubs were linked to Machado early in the midsummer trade market, but the talks never gained momentum. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Cubs shortstop Addison Russell, it's unclear if the Cubs will pursue Machado this offseason. In general, the Cubs seem more enamored with players becoming available via free agency in future offseasons -- such as Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado -- than those in the current class. However, it's noteworthy that Harper would welcome the opportunity to play with childhood friend Kris Bryant -- and reportedly has a dog named Wrigley. https://www.mlb.com/news/manny-machado-bryce-harper-markets-take-shape/c-300231462
  12. I can’t imagine the Yankees are actually interested in trading Stanton, despite what vocal segments of the NY sports media and their fanbase say.
  13. He definitely was plugged in when he said Maddon would be fired if the Cubs lost the Wild Card Game. There’s a lot of smoke out there from various media folks. Hopefully their sources are just extrapolating the Smyly/Hamels stuff and that isn’t a sign they can’t go after Harper. The Chicago sports media hasn’t been that great since Theo got here, the national guys have been better.

  15. And getting rocked. I was disappointed with FB velocity only being in the 94-96 range in a short burst. And thought his infield defense could’ve helped limit some of that damage.
  16. Nico smacks a line single up the middle off Jordan Sheffield in his first at bat.
  17. Bailey Clark is now in the game.
  18. Tommy: Thoughts on Nico Hoerner’s quality AFL? Eric A Longenhagen: He looks good, the same as he did in the spring. You still have to be okay with the throwing to project him at shortstop but I think he’s functional enough in that regard to be a 45 or 50 there. Francis: Tell me I’m really stupid for falling in love with the Cubs AZL teams and Eugene roster. I can’t help it. Eric A Longenhagen: Not stupid, I like a lot of those guys, too. KW: Erick Leal has yet to give up a run in the AFL. What’s your take on him? Should the Cubs protect him on the 40-man from the Rule 5 draft? Eric A Longenhagen: Jeez, I did not know that. Up/down guy for me.
  19. The Fall Stars Game is tonight at 7 pm on MLB Network. Nico Hoerner and Bailey Clark will be playing but neither is starting.
  20. And The Athletic says speed is Nico’s selling tool:
