D1 Baseball mock draft:

Each list is going to be different based on what the person creating it prefers. Additionally, Longehagen is based in the Phoenix area so he's far more well-versed on Cubs prospects who are in Arizona a lot (guys who are at instructs, played in the AZL recently, new draft picks, etc). It's probably why he's sticking with guys who've struggled recently but had AZL success in the past, like Ademan, Albertos and Reivaj Garcia. Also, I'm not sure Martinez, Verdugo, K. Thompson and Ademan in the 20s is that big a surprise. The last part with the blurb about the state of the organization was very nice to see. It's conformation from a national guy that the farm system is on the rise and the changes we've heard about so much are putting them on the right track:

No one knew what Trea Turner's ultimate position was going to be and most scouts had doubts he could stick at SS. Yeah, some similarities for sure. Turner is the better athlete, but Mitchell is also very good athletically. I don't know if the Padres or Nats did anything to his swing or if he just got stronger naturally? I'd have to ask. I'm not comparing them more in depth than just to say they were both as well-regarded, highly athletic college players who fell their draft years for similar reasons. Turner's swing was much longer in college than it was his rookie year in the big leagues. Teams didn’t like it because it didn’t match his speedy profile.

I've seen this mentioned hypothetically with the Angels and Dylan Crews. Angels will offer 40% of slot to keep their pick for next year; Crews already took himself out of the draft so he isn't signing for 40%; and the Angels get to save their money this year without getting lambasted by others for screwing over a player (since he already wasn't going to be signing). Definitely would help the Cubs by pushing a player down a bit. The name making the rounds yesterday was Drew Bowser, an LA-area prep infielder with an incredibly strong Stanford commitment. But the Angels denied the rumor yesterday (everyone knows it’s them), so I wonder if they’ll switch gears and just take someone severely underslot like a college guy expected to go in the 20s.

Garrett Mitchell’s junior year fall reminds me of Trea Turner’s. Both were well regarded, athletic prospects who fell due to injury/health issues and swing concerns.

Two weeks ago, he said in a chat there was no chance the Cubs take a prep arm. :roll: Yeah, I think it's pretty clear that people don't have a peg on the Cubs. The local guys said Mitchell and 5 High Schoolers. The national guys are primarily saying college with a few high schoolers mixed in. And there appear to be different opinions on how willing they are to do an arm. I do hope if we go for a less fun college guy like a Foscue or a Loftin, that it's to let us get a HS player who falls. I'd prefer where we pick to just play the draft straight, but I could understand thinking something like Foscue at 70% of slot is better than the other options. If they don’t play it straight in the first round, I want Austin Wells.
