  1. Well I certianly don't like 8 years, but we'll wait to see what kind of options might exist. I can only hope it is frontloaded a bit and he produces for the next few years. If he is productive for three years and helps us win a World Series, I'll forgive the next five.
  2. Can we change the title to: Pujols caught with illegal drugs
  3. He's still a very good player, but no I didn't want him on the Cubs. I like thos numbers though. And man, that 2004 was a real good season. Just makes me that much more sad we didn't make the playoffs.
  4. For the low end guys, it kind of depends on who the guy is. If a guy is a ten year vet and hitting .200/.300 and always has, it doesn't mean much. If a young guy comes in and struggles but keeps an IsoD at a high number, there is good reason to believe that as they adjust and begin to hit their IsoD will continue.
  5. My post wasn't even about Wells coming to the Cubs. It was based off the assumption that Toronto might value Barrett and Anaheim values Wells enough to send a couple young players, including Ervin Santana. If one of those young guys is one of Anaiem's good young catchers it might be worthwhile to pursue selling high with Barrett. Wells to Anahiem Barrett to Toronto Ervin Santana and young catcher (Mathis or Napoli, preferably Napoli) to Chicago Maybe Toronto or Chicago gets another prospect, but that would be the basis. I don't want Wells on the Cubs, especially if it includes giving up Barrett. Speaking of IsoD and IsoP... Mike Napoli: IsoD- .132 IsoP- .227 yea...
  6. The reason I as this is because if Barrett is worth Wells. Or simply, if the Blue Jays would want him. And the Angels would give up Santana and others for Wells, I could envision a three way that might work out nicely. Wells to Anaheim Barrett and one prospect from Cubs(Marshall?) and one from Anahiem (?) o Toronto Santana and other (?) to Chicago Throw some other prospects around if needed to complete. If the other was say a good young catcher (Anahiem has two on the 40 man) it could work out nicely. Mathis or Napoli are the two young catchers. Napoli looks a little better, but Mathis looks pretty good himself. Would they be willing to part with one? I'm not trying to actively trade Barrett, but it would be selling high, he only has one year left on hi contract, and he could either decline rapidly or do well and be expensive to keep. If we could get a nice young pitcher and replacement at catcher...
  7. Really? I must have missed that. Sounds like a bad trade to me.
  8. God that is the most depressing thing I have ever heard.
  9. Don't think this has been posted: I know some people would support a Barret for Wells trade: Santana AND others for Wells? http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/columnists/cs-061116whispers,1,2487316,print.story?coll=cs-home-headlines
  10. I'm neither a huge fan or huge doubter of the trade, but will say this: This move further prooves a big move is coming and what the outcome of that deal is will ultimately determine how pleased I am.
  11. Most games are going to be won in the first 8 innings of the game. Put a lot of good players out there and you will win a lot of those games before the ninth.
  12. Drew's health is a concern, but if we equip ourselves with a good 4th OF my worries will be lessened.
  13. While I somewhat agree he's got a decent chance to turn his career around, I'm wondering how many more question marks we can carry around on the 40 man roster. He'd have to be willing to sign a minor league deal and spend time in AAA if he doesn't win a job, possibly out of the pen. The 40 man roster management is the biggest thing right now. That being the case, if this is done, I'd like to hold off. After the Rule 5, after we've had the chance to make some trades, etc.
  14. Actually before he got hot late in the year there were plenty of people calling for his head and talking about Carlos Lee in the offseason. Look it up. There were his supporters but they were not the majority.
  15. While a $1M might not be bad in and of itself alone as a low risk attempt for Marquis, remember we have 40 spots on the 40 man. We can't have half those spots on risks.
  16. I'd give Marquis a minor league contract and invite to spring training.
  17. You think Soto would do better than Blanco regardless of the cost? How is that? Soto is very likely to hit less than Blanco does-even if Blanco regresses signficantly from his career year last year, Soto still only had a 739 OPS in Triple A, and looked lost at the plate in his very limited major league at-bats. If he played for the Cubs next year, I bet he wouldn't get above a .600 OPS. Do you think he's defensively better than Blanco? I doubt that as well. I can see why it can be argued that Soto for cheap is better than Blanco value wise, but I see no way that he's simply the better player. Well I think its a guarantee that Blanco will hit for more power than Soto, whch is where a lot of the OPS difference would come. Soto has a reasonable chance to put up a better OBP, but thats not guaranteed. But I'm mostly looking at the defense, and Soto will provide good D for cheap.
  18. BigBad B, I totally agree with you, but some of those guys are kinda hard to be critical of. Matt Lawton? Only started to suck once we had him Bobby Hill? He was seen as a good prospect. Were we not to give him a chance? Some of these guys filled in during emergencies and hardly saw time, wasn't like Hendry entered the season with them (Jackson, Wilson, Glanville, Ojeda, Grieve) Even the Yanks or BoSox have had their share of embarassing players. But yea, Hendry has had too many.
  19. Since very few posters gave him props for signing his own free agents (ARam, Wood, and Miller), I would think he should be ahead of the GMs that couldn't even sign their own free agents (Soriano, Drew, Schmidt, Zito, CLee, etc.). What? You want to rank him ahead of Beane because he managed to resign Ramirez but Beane didn't resign Zito? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. All I'm saying is that I think Hendry has done a good job so far and deserves some props. I can imagine the 100+ thread of criticism if he let someone like Zito walk, while Beane (and others) come out smelling like a rose. I bet Beane could resign Zito with a payroll exceeding $80Mil, let alone $100+
  20. Barrett is certianly not untouchable. And while I would love to take advantage of selling a player at his high point, I'm not sure it is worth it considering the bargain he is (Barret makes less than $2M more than Blanco- how bout them apples). I'd do it at the right offer, but I'm not sure we'll see that right offer. Anyone think since Barrett is such a bargain it explains why Hendry was willing to spend more on Blanco. Not saying its right, but Hendry might think so. Barrett Blanco Soto Reyes Fox? Yea, we will need to be moving something. Reyes could be cut easily, and while we had 4 last year, thats not really necessary again especially with Blanco around long term. So you figure one other guy could be moved. Fox might have some value as part of a bigger trade. The number of guys on the 40 man, especially at catcher must mean some move is coming.
  21. We are in no rush to offer abritration, as long as it is by the deadline. If team signs him today we can still offer arbitration and get the picks Isn't Pierre a type B free agent? If so, then the Cubs would get no compensation per the new labor agreement, right? We get a supplemental pick. The Giants don't have to give up anything. Thats the difference. I think.
  22. I still don't want to count on him being any more than a number 8 hitter. Its actually a great risk at that spot. With him in the lineup I don't want to be taking any chances on young guys like Theriot or Pie. And I certianly don't want crap like Izturis (not that I ever really did, but I resigned myself to the fact). In fact, if we can dump Izturis without eating much or any salary, we will have basically made an Izturis for DeRosa swap. Only issue then really is that SS might be harder to fill than 2B in this market, but we are showing interest in Lugo anyway. Sign Lugo, sign or trade for a big bat in CF, get a nice 4th OF and our offense would be set Lugo SS Murton LF Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Andruw Jones? CF Barrett C Jaque Jones RF DeRosa 2B I fear we are going to see something like this though: Lugo/Roberts CF DeRosa 2B Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Jaque Jones RF Barrett C Murton LF Izturis SS Really only a difference of one guy, but its a HUGE difference and DeRosa is still a question mark.
  23. We are in no rush to offer abritration, as long as it is by the deadline. If team signs him today we can still offer arbitration and get the picks
