He didn't have to reinvent his system just to use his best players well. I used sarcasm at first and stated the opposite. What's not to get? As far as Cutler having a good season he had one good one and one bad one basically with Martz. But unless my memory is failing me his good season with Martz was 2011 where he just went into hero mode and seemed to succeed despite the awful play calling. Or was that 2012 that he had to constantly go into hero mode to overcome Tice's play calling? I feel like it was 2011 because I don't recall Marshall being there as a release. Yes and no. He could have done more with some talent, but he was also pretty rigid in what he wanted, underutilizing a good TE and seeing him shipped off because of it. And he seems to prefer smaller/quicker WRs so I'm not sure I'd give him the benefit of the doubt if he had been given the talent that's here now. He needed something specific that he wasn't given and part of his failure is his inability to adapt. Granted a properly utilized Olsen wouldn't have brought back the Greatest Show on Turf type results, but it may have let him reach Turner level results. Granted there's always going to be certain preferences, but if you want to compete on a regular basis you have to be adaptive to player strengths since talent trumps all. If accurate, Ricketts could have just gotten city approval and told the rooftop association to [expletive] itself. Nice of him to at least try to bargain with them first. Combination of nice and wishful thinking that a lawsuit could be avoided. So PTR apparently valued less revenue without a lawsuit, maybe thinking over the short term of the contract the legal costs outweighed the revenue and then after the contract they could expand to the original plan. I was at a game for a corporate event, and it pretty much is a rooftop bar as is. There are about 35-40 seats/places to stand where you can actually see the game, and the rest of the crowd gets to watch on tv and listen to the crowd in the actual ballpark. I realize all the rooftops are not uniform in seats with views, but my experience is more bar than ball game. That was my experience when I went for a bachelor party, but it also snowed that day, so everyone was inside. With better weather the views were good at this one. If the team gets good, the rooftops want the lure of a some view to get fans outside the corp events and bachelor parties. If you knew going in there would be zero view, you'd be hesitant to book your event there, at least at the price you do now. Maybe you, specifically would. But I've been 2-3 times, all in good weather, and nobody paid a lick of attention to the game across the street. This would be even more true if it actually is a large group. And it is one of few options for a large group if that is the type of thing you want to do. It doesn't matter what you actually do when there but everyone is booking those group gatherings under the guise of being able to watch the game. It looks stupid if you were to invite your clients, co-workers, or friends to some overpriced rooftop bar serving hotdogs and your choice of three whole beers, just because it happens to be across from Wrigley. There's like a dozen other bars across from Wrigley that also can't see onto the field. Everyone is going to at least glance at the view and you'd look dumb to drag them to Wrigleyville when you could bring them somewhere more convenient with better food and drink that also can't see inside Wrigley field. It's all the idea behind the event. Hardly anyone watches a game in the luxury box either in a corporate setting, but you wouldn't pay the same for that box if the view was suddenly downgraded. Right now the rooftops with better views generally charge more, so of course there would be an adjustment. The first plan you were talking about a sign with gaps, so a minor downgrade. Even if you buy the PR crap, they're primarily responsible for the media presence that exists when talking about a Sammy return. If they had just done it for the anniversary thing it wouldn't have been covered so much and now it's like a self fulfilling prophecy where of course the media is going to cover the story if you do bring him back and in turn draw attention to the crazies who will boo. Like right now if you announce "June 1 is bring Sosa back to the Cubs day" the meatballs will flock to it because it's somehow become a story. If you are looking for a less controversy-filled way to bring him back. Do it at the Cubs convention. First you have Cubs greats from the 1998 and 2003 playoff teams introduce something or someone. "Please welcome Kerry Wood and Sammy Sosa." Most meatballs will not boo with Wood there just to spite Sosa. Then you have him do an autograph session at the convention but also have "Cubs great" Ryan Theriot sign autographs at the same time. Most meatballs won't risk missing their chance at a Theriot signature just to stand in line for a chance to heckle Sosa so he'll again get a warm reception from fans. Then you just start including him in PR stuff like it's no thing. Also once you have the video board, have him sing the stretch and right before his performance play an awesome highlight reel on the kick ass video screen. I won't argue too much, but I feel like Martz got better results with less until Cutler went down, and sealed his fate. Without lining it up position by position I think Cutler alone is more valuable than the other talent differences generally netting the 2005-09 Bears against the 10-11 Bears.
