  1. Looks like a new and (hopefully) improved OL next year! :yahoo:
  2. He hasn't earned it with his performance at AAA the last two years? Three weeks in odd conditions against the most random variety of pitchers you could think of isn't the time to decide something like this. Pie should have it sealed up already.
  3. well federal law should trump baseball rules 100 times out of 100. i'm pretty sure that rape and murder aren't officially against the rules of baseball either, but that wouldn't excuse a ball player from committing them Technically, though, that wouldn't make rape or murder "cheating." And what if said player managed to use steroids without breaking any laws? curious as to how that would work. It's a hypothetical to separate the law from the baseball rulebook. Aren't they legal over the counter in Mexico? Get them there, inject them there, and come back. Are you breaking any laws? I don't know. As I said, anyway, it's a hypothetical. I recall in the Real Sports episode on steroids (which actually showed that they aren't nearly as dangerous as all the hype would have you believe) that there's a few bodybuilders in southern California who cross into Tijuana when it's time to shoot up to do it legally. I don't recall all the details as it's been a while since I saw the show.

  5. and I don't -- what more does he have to do to be given a legitimate shot? Corey Patterson made them very gun shy right now I think. Patterson didn't actually earn his promotions with production, though. I've never looked hard at his minor league numbers, but did he ever even do anything down there aside from that one monster year with the Lugnuts?
  6. and I don't -- what more does he have to do to be given a legitimate shot? Hit well in a bunch of meaningless games against random pitchers who nobody had ever heard of.
  7. Roberts is not in camp again today. Gotta wonder about this "stomach ailment." It's probably just a coincidence, but it does seem funny.
  8. Nothing new, really. Lou has been saying for a while that CF was the only position in the lineup that wasn't set because of the competition between Pie and Fuld.
  9. That's cool with me.
  10. That depends almost entirely what you think of Fontenot. In all honesty, playing Ronny Cedeno instead of Theriot, and keeping Murton as our fourth OF is probably just about as good. I think that's just straight up BRob's advantage over DeRosa. If you add in DeRosa over the next utility guy (presumably Fontenot), it probably becomes a little more than 2-3 more wins. Last I checked, we weren't likely to just add Roberts (and his 2-3 wins) without subtracting from the major league squad. True, but I suppose it depends on how much PT you actually would have expected out of Murton, Gallagher, Cedeno, etc.
  11. I am with you 100%. I've always wondered what a non-pinstripe home white would look like. I'd have to see it before forming an opinion, but it could look good. Oh, and if you're bringing back the blue, put the logo from the pinstripes on them instead of the walking cub.

  13. Am I the only one who liked the nameless home jerseys better, BTW? At first I didn't think I'd like them, but they just had a way more classic feel to them. I think they just added the names back last year so they could sell a ton of Soriano jerseys.
  14. +1 to that.... I hate the current road jerseys.
  15. Now is the time of year for these non-stories. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080220&content_id=2381437&vkey=spt2008news&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of the blue jerseys, but I did sort of miss them last year. I did like the dark blue jerseys from ST a few years ago, but we won't ever see those on the field.
  16. Um, so what are we gonna do about the draft now that IMB! has seemingly been banned? I assume some of you guys keep in touch with him..
  17. I get such terrible radio service in my dorm. DId he say anything of interest? Not really. Says he loves playing with DeRo but it's win/win whether he's paired with Roberts or DeRosa. Obviously it takes time for middle infielders to develop a rapport, blah blah. Said he took a ton of swings this off-season in order to be a more consistent hitter next year. Nothing earth shattering or new, really.
  18. Theriot is on now...
  19. While I agree that it seems completely unlikely and counterintuitive that sliding would be faster, I don't think this is ever a good form of reasoning. Look at how many things most "baseball people" have wrong to this day despite how long the game has been around.
  20. Remember when Zambrano just didn't give up HR? Up until game one of the NLCS, that is...
  21. I posted that on OH and bigbird was the first to reply with...
  22. Levine is reporting that the latest on the Roberts trade is that Baltimore is going to send some scouts to our camp before games even start (just to watch workouts) to get a look at what they might be getting in a deal. Bruce feels that it's a bit odd, as MacPhail should have a good handle on what the Cubs have, anyway. Also says there is no question that the Cintron acquisition was tied to the potential Roberts deal in that they want to have him around if/when they ship Cedeno to Baltimore.
  23. Levine reports that the Sox say it's an unfounded rumor.
