  1. I think he was asking about some fires which I haven't heard a thing about. Shows how much I pay attention to non-sports news. Sad, really.
  2. Right, but how is that calculated? If it's watered down by all the lower leverage spots that Lou wasted Marmol in, it's not what I'm looking for. I'm wondering who pitched in more high leverage spots, not whose high leverage appearances made up a greater percentage of their total appearances, if that makes sense.
  3. That's an important question, but I think David already hit on the even more basic question. If WGN-HD isn't in your HD tier, it sounds like the WGN you're watching is just the regular SD broadcast. The fact that it says "In Hi-def where available" unfortunately sounds like it doesn't apply in your case -- it's probably referring to those areas where the separate WGN-HD channel is available. I thought B was joking, but who knows. :) Actually, I wasn't. Before I got an HDMI cable, I had some channels come in better than others. Ah. Figured you were just poking fun at the typical Best Buy/electronics store employees. My bad. As long as you're using an HD connection (like HDMI or component), it shouldn't make too much of a difference. There isn't a significant difference, if any, between the two. The main difference is the convenience of having a digital audio signal tossed in with the video on HDMI instead of having to use a separate audio connection. I'd have to know a lot more about your setup to know why HDMI might've happened to have made a difference but it could've been a lot of things. Much more likely that he's just not watching an HD channel given the fact that he said he had a beautiful picture with ESPN.
  4. You think Marmol would be more valuable to us as a closer than in his present role where he's probably more likely to come in with runners on in close games and such? I'd say it's pretty close, actually. Marmol isn't used exclusively in high-leverage situations, and presumably Gregg wouldn't be going exclusively to Marmol's role. If Gregg is going to be bad and the idea of Marmol taking only the one-run saves isn't going to happen, then yes, the Cubs are probably better off with Marmol closing. Yea. I'd be really interested in seeing who pitches in MORE high leverage spots. I know Marmol's number was watered down by a lot of lower leverage appearances last year, but in terms of number of tight appearances, I wonder if he had more than Wood. I hate being THAT guy who asks about/for the stats rather than looking them up, but I don't really know where to look up those leverage stats.

  6. You probably don't have WGN in HD. And if you do, you're not watching the WGN HD channel. But I'd guess it's the former rather than the latter.

  8. Hendry is on with Waddle and Silvy. Just said that if the weather was looking better for tomorrow they might've made a decision already. They're waiting on another update at 11 from their weather people at the airport, but there's a chance there's going to be a window to get the game in later on today.
  9. just wondering, based on what? all the forecasts i've seen show rain all day. is it just going to be a lot lighter later on?
  10. That's a bit premature, IMO. You don't need to be lights out to be a closer. Guys like Borowski and Dempster are just fine, especially when you actually have a much better arm in the bullpen for the tight spots. He obviously has to pitch a lot better than he has already. We shall see. It'd be nice if Marmol got the 1 run saves and Gregg got the easier ones or whatever... which Lou could get away with given that he had indicated that they'd both be getting some of the saves, but I doubt that's what he has in mind.
  11. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090412&content_id=4243418&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc FWIW, which is not much at this point given how he looked tonight after getting two quick outs, it looks like Gregg's knee acts up on him when he sits between innings. I was thinking that someway or another the fact that he pitched in the 8th and then came out for the 9th the other night might've thrown him off somewhat. We'll know soon enough if Gregg can get the job done or if his start is indicative of how he's going to perform most of the season. I just wish the alternative wasn't to have to waste one of the best relievers in baseball as a closer (that sounds kind of weird). But we could have bigger problems, I suppose.
  12. I'm pretty sure Blanco signed for the league minimum. That said, I don't really miss him. And I don't care all that much about our backup C. They all suck. Just be glad we're one of the few teams with a good #1.
  13. I never said you're one of the people that overvalue the closer. I was just lamenting the fact that what I would see as the ideal way to setup this bullpen couldn't happen because of the fact that it's viewed this way (by fans, players, coaches, etc. alike). But you did say Gregg is doing the most important job. Really, I just wish Marmol would be used in the highest leverage spots, regardless of inning or whether it's a save situation, but that's not going to happen either.
  14. No. That said, I'd probably rather Guzman close than Gregg, but that would never fly. It would be a slap in the face to Marmol. It sucks that people think "closer" is this incredibly important and prestigious pseudo-position.
  15. He should still be good for at least an .800ish OPS, which, when almost everyone in your lineup is likely to do (minus SS) or exceed, makes for a pretty damn good offense.
  16. Just thought I'd pass on that tidbit, considering how many of us were pretty much writing off CF production for the most part. Same goes for Harden in some senses. Both of them have done a little to calm our pre-season concerns about them (to some extent, since with Harden, there's obviously always the health concerns). But there's hope that we'll be as good (better??) as last year. Discuss.
  17. ...and these last few games aren't a fluke (in the sense that he can hit well, obviously, not in the sense that he can hit .500 and slug .900), our offense is going to be absurdly good.
  18. Alliteration.
  19. Just saw the Soriano at 1st question answered. I think brewerfan.net said that there was another call at 1B that was blown in their favor that resulted in a run too, though.
  20. Got back from this game a little while ago... awesome. Was Soriano out at first? And did Soriano throw out that runner at 3rd or was it a good call? I also hope that this game doesn't convince Lou that Marmol needs to close. Brewers fans are hoping it does.
  21. There's a lot of reasons that wouldn't/couldn't happen, but it's nice to dream.
  22. If this is true about Hardy, I'm pretty sure I'd rather trade for him than Peavy.

  24. it'd be nice to have cedeno or anybody who could competently field SS in a defensive pinch
  25. it's uncanny how many wild finishes/games we've had vs. the brewers (in either direction) since they moved to the NL. the only other team where it's even close is the rockies
