I think its 3/$40 for Chatwood that seems like a hell of a deal also it peeves the hell out of me that it seems like the industry standard is putting 3/40 instead of 40/3

it's a one time signing bonus. a difference of 2.7 M or whatever can easily be recuped/washed out in endorsements, even in baseball. you really think he's going to base his decision on 2.7M when he's passing up 100+M just bc he can't wait? not to mention the fact that he included all those teams in the penalty and eliminated teams that had big pools (when he didn't need to eliminate anyone) either way, what an odd choice in teams if bowden actually knows anything: [tweet] [/tweet]

But isn't any "win this year" mindset in FA actually when you use FA to round out your roster with good but not terribly expensive players? I think he was taking more of a low(er) risk gamble on upside with a lot of guys (much like the cubs did) with a quantity driven approach in hopes that some of them could become core pieces when they were good...but i get what you're saying and i agree.

Which makes wanting Giancarlo strange because in about 4 years that contract is going to look just as bad as Pujols' contract. nah he's freshly turned 28 and whoever gets him is probably going to get surplus value out of the first few years and money is worth less and less as time goes on, especially in mlb fwiw, his 2017 fWAR was "worth" $55M on its own. pujols was 32 and almost immediately bad

well, it has been, but in a far less relevant way (the two flights to and from japan, one of which - spring - is the same for all the teams he picked) than the one he's talking about.

i truly don't think they were approaching free agency with a win this year mindset in any of his FA periods (granted, he's had some large misses, regardless, and at least a couple good hits in Hicks and Sitton - amukamara also not a terrible signing). i think they will actually use the cap space to go aggressively after the higher end talent this year with grooming trubisky and the new hc and everything in mind. i think of it kind of like the cubs approached the offseasons in 2011-13 (not saying that the bears should have been doing it this way - just that i think they are/have been) and i think this will be more like the cubs' post 2014 offseason. we'll see.

if you're really asking, yes if it's rhetorical, pretend i posted nothing (you can see the videos yourself on the cubs snapchat story, but it's not worth going out of your way for...just 3-4 clips of him working out at their facility)
