  1. Kaplan said the other night, Hendry loves Murton, but that he almost guaranteed that Jones would not be with the team to start next year. Schnikes that's good news if true! thats fantastic news. Id try to change Wuertz to Eyre/Howry though, but thats still great. Westbrook would be a great #3/#4 option for the rotation, and would be a steady, solid arm for us for a good 2-3 years. I can't wait to see the type of improvement hed make going from the AL to the NL. He has pitched 200+ innings for 3 straight years, and doesnt walk to many batters. Those things are two attributes we need out of at least one of our starters next year. I believe he's talking about Jones being gone being "good news if true." I guess I wouldn't mind Westbrook, though.
  2. Don't forget 1989. Lets not forget, we got Williams and Aardsma in that trade. Worth it, I say. What the hell ever happened to Williams anyway? Last I remember he started some games for us in May or around then. I didn't watch much after the Lee injury...
  3. Makes me feel a bit better. I like that it appears that his offensive improvement came with a change in approach/hitting style. The fact that we now have a good hitting coach that won't screw with this doesn't hurt, either. I honestly wasn't that disappointed with this move, although it does feel like we overspent on someone with really only one year to go off of (at least it's one good year). Hank White and possibly Gil Meche, however, are another matter.
  4. Sweet pics...wish I could've been there for the game. If you right click them and select "View image," they'll work. But for whatever reason, they're not showing on this page, TB.
  5. I have no idea myself, but I do know that 100 is average for both, and that it takes time period, park factors, etc. into account. ops = on base % + slugging% era = (earned runs/innings pitched) x 9 He's asking for OBP+ and ERA+.. not OBP and ERA...
  6. Since when is a player's last 100 at bats an effective way to judge how much he should be making? Since when are his last 520 AB's an effective way to judge how much he should be making?
  7. I'm with a few of the other posters here. Meh. Assuming he has a decent glove, I could see him producing Walker-like numbers without people having the gripe about defense. That said, he could also be worse than Todd. Wish we just would've kept Walker...one less hole to fill.
  8. Nobody is saying that, though. This is how you avoid disaster contracts like the Yankees are saddled with right now, and like we have been in the past. You don't sign a 30 year old guy (outside of a real superstar like an ARod or Pujols) coming off a career year to a big money long-term contract. so are you against signing Lee, Soriano and/or Drew? All will get multiple years and all are over 30 Soriano, for the money he's asking, yes. Lee, yes. I'm assuming Drew's demands are at least SLIGHTLY more reasonable, given his injury history. His production is also more sustainable because he is a very patient hitter, which niether Lee nor Soriano is. JD Drew would be the ideal signing for the Cubs. I don't think they realize it, so I can only hope they wind up with him serendipitously.
  9. Heard from where? Davhearn said it on the last page telling me that pujols, howard, etc. beg to differ about older players having pop. LOL Ever put words in my mouth?

  11. Lee had career highs in HR, RBI and SLG this year. Clearly on the decline He did? He did have career highs in HR, RBI (team stat, who cares?) and SLG. Then again, he played 40% of last season in Texas. Ya, I edited. I thought he was talking about Derrek, after someone made reference to DLee being ~30.
  12. Lee had career highs in HR, RBI and SLG this year. Clearly on the decline You know what, you're right. It would be a smart move to give a 30 year old Carlos Lee 12-15 million for 5 years. BTW, assuming Lee isn't on steroids or HGH, when exactly do you expect him (or most players) to begin their career declines, if not in their early-mid 30's?
  13. Murton is a BETTER VALUE. The difference in production next year and in the years thereafter will not be worth the millions more spent to sign Carlos Lee. It's not jut that he's "much cheaper." It's that the difference between the two will likely be nowhere near enough to justify paying Carlos Lee what he'll be demanding.
  14. Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, Miguel Cabrera and many others would beg to differ. (Here come the very predictable replies saying that I'm somehow comparing Murton to these future Hall of Famers)
  15. I'll take the guy who is 5 years younger, millions and millions cheaper, and showing signs of very good production over the 8 year vet headed for the downside of his career.
  16. So two of our targets this offseason are guys we almost traded Sosa for in 2000. Weren't Westbrook and Soriano (along with Jackson Melian, who we did wind up having at one point) parts of the deal that would've sent Sammy to NY?
  17. See, the thing is, he's not a top of the rotation starter. Hence the "overrated" label.
  18. You really think so? I think he's a pretty good interview. Loved the line about what overrated "even means," in today's postgame.
  19. Where's the guy that said something along the lines of "Eli isn't that great but Rex is just awful," earlier in this thread?
  20. I'm guessing most of them would have gotten drunk irregardless and just checked NSBB because they knew the pending deadline. Normally they'd be wiser than to check out NSBB while drunk. Making up words now, Raisin? :D
  21. So in the end, the hometown discount is basically the difference between a guaranteed year, and a mutual option at the end of the contract. Not bad. ...if you are to believe that report. I think we all know how credible all these reports are...
  22. So does anyone know if this was actually completed last night or today? Does he count as a Type A signing, or did we get this done before the window closed??
  23. Remember that one year Manny hit 40 homeruns? Because, of course, anyone who uses steroids becomes a superstar slugger. When the evidence against Sosa appears to be he became a superstar slugger, I think it's valid to talk about Manny Alexander's explosive power. Oh and the he cheated using a corked bat excuse, because I speed when I drive. I also murder people I guess. Speeding and Murdering does not equal cheating and cheating on a "higher level". . Your arguement made no sense. He made an analogy, not an argument. And it did make sense. Corking is to 'roiding as speeding is to murder. In other words, cheating to a lower degree is to cheating to a high degree as breaking the law to one lower degree is to breaking the law to a high degree. It's not a perfect analogy, but it does make sense.
