  1. I'm expecting no direct acknowledgment whatsoever of our points and a short reply that implies that we all have no idea what we're talking about.
  2. First, strikeouts aren't really important at all in evaluating a hitter. They're definitely not nearly as important as a lot of people would have you believe (including yourself, apparently). Second, I'm not sure that anyone said that OBP is overrated (although it probably is a little bit these days, but it's still the most important "basic" offensive statistic). Third, "this isn't slowpitch softball." Um, ok. What? Fourth, without even getting into the argument about park factors and just how much PetCo brings down Greene's numbers, do you realize that even if Greene were everything you say he is, he'd still be a significant upgrade over what we have at SS (which is Ryan freaking Theriot)?
  3. We could have that in Pie and Fuku (presumably with Theriot at SS)... I'm not sure if you were directing your comment at the idea of trading Pie, but if you are,I'd take Fuku and DeRosa with Greene at SS over that in a heartbeat, though. Wouldn't you?
  4. Even if all this were as absolute and true as you'd like to think it is, he'd still be a big upgrade over Ryan Theriot.
  5. I'm pretty sure that was the 2000 season. So, as of next season, that'll be 8 years ago. Yes, they played the Mets. I remember staying up all night to watch that game and then having to go to school in the morning. That sucked. I'm pretty sure one of the games went to extras, too.
  6. Many people, especially those who aren't used to it, are absolutely disgusted by the 95 degree and 95% humidity from mid July to mid August. I know it. I've seen it. I don't at all get it. I'll take that weather all year any day over having to put up with all the ice, short days, and all the other garbage that winter brings. That said, watching the Bears play the NFC Championship game in the snow from inside my warm house was pretty cool. Well, we aren't talking about picking between summer in Chicago and winter in Chicago. We're talking about the spotty weather early in the season and late in the season, plus the disgusting heat and humidity in the middle of the season, compared to San Diego, where it'll be between 75-85 every day with very little humidity, if any. Oh, I know. I was just, for no reason in particular, sharing why I hate this miserable time of year and why you'll never hear me complain about it being too hot or humid here in the summer. I still think park factors should play a far greater role in his decision making, but that's just me and not him.

  8. Check this site from last year. http://sturgeongeneral.wordpress.com/page/2/ It has Fuku at about .308/.375/.507 with 16 HR, 110 K, 60 BB and 40 2Bs. Would you guys be happy with these number? I like the 308. 40 doubles is solid, but 110/60 ratio is not that disiplined. That ratio is meaningless. He'd have an OBP of .375, which is great, and he'd have a solid IsoD of ~70, which is all you need to know about his discipline. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why people continue to talk about strikeouts (and strikeouts to walks) when evaluating hitters. That SLG is pretty high for only 16 HR...reminds me of DLee's extremely doubles-happy first half this year.
  9. To Chicagoans, great rationale and well put. To mild climate localities, political-like propaganda. Are the 1.5 - 2 months just April/May and late September/October? Because a case could be made, especially by Whale's Vaginaians, that July and August can be miserable as well. Late May through early July, and late August to early September may be the only good weather times in Chicago, especially for baseball. I don't consider anything between mid-May (early June at the latest) and mid-to-late September to be remotely near miserable. Of course, that's just personal preference. November through March in Chicago could cease to exist and I'd never, ever miss it.
  10. I really don't see where climate plays into it more than park factors, especially considering that this is a sport played predominantly in the summer. There's maybe 1.5-2 months of really sucky Chicago weather during the baseball season, and the team might be in town for half of it.
  11. There's a funny thing about stereotypes. A lot of them are true most/much of the time.
  12. Not that I buy into this at all (the Cubs could never be this lucky) I suppose that would explain him having his two best seasons the last two years, considering he'd be 26 and 27 for those seasons. Of course, the year he had in 2002 at "22" would be pretty absurd.
  13. I'd take both LaTroy and Kyle in my bullpen any day.
  14. God, that Nomar day was glorious. One of my top 3 or 4 days as a Cubs fan ever. I guess that's sort of sad.
  15. You have to expect that at least 2/3 of Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez will regain more power numbers. All 3 should be in the 30+ range, and really producing 100+ between the three of them. I would love one more true power bat as well, but its not like the team is devoid of power with that core plus DeRosa, Soto, Fukudome, and Roberts likely to chip-in the teens (assuming the rumors work out). Folks should be glad that all three hot rumor targets are OBP capable, at .350+ each. I'm more concerned with the gaping hole at shortstop than any true power bats, but yea.
  16. It's mainly the Pacific Ocean that sucks, IMO.
  17. It's funny how of all the rumors we're hearing, not one of them addresses the biggest offensive hole in the lineup. Some of them even address areas of strength. I know I'm beating a dead horse, but it's beyond ridiculous.
  18. Figgins will be 30 come opening day. Fukudome is 30 and will be 31 for most of next season. Roberts is 30. I just wish some of the guys we're pursuing would be in the 26-28 range.. You and everyone else in baseball. The asking price for players in the prime years is very high. The reality is that these guys aren't available unless you give up similar talent - Hill is the only such qualified talent on the Cubs MLB roster. Besides, the one possibly available talent at that age is Crawford, and many people around cried at the news the Cubs had interest, despite the fact it probably would have been a solid move. As soon as the cost of Hill was announced, nobody around here wanted to pursue, and that pattern repeats on this board. I'm big on the Hamilton and Teahen bandwagons. I'm 80% sold on the Khalil bandwagon, too. Crawford, not so much. Either way, it's not like I'd mind guys like Fukudome and Roberts, I just prefer some other options that are younger and very probably cheaper.
  19. ...He did say swing a deal for Hamilton instead. I'll give him that much. And that just might be a better option than throwing all this money at a 31 year old Japanese player. and throwing a bunch of money at a 31 year old japanese player might be a better idea than throwing the farm at an oft-injured former drug addict and then signing carlos silva. It might. I didn't say definitively that either idea was better than the other.

  21. $15m per year for a guy who might wind up being nearly as good as Hideki Matsui someday, making considering more than Hideki makes right now. That would be some commitment. I'm out. Let's find a cheaper option that can put up a respectable OBP for a fraction of the cost. This is what happens when Hendry is so public about his interest. I don't think you can pin that on Hendry. It was the Hunter and Jones deals that screwed us here.
  22. Definitely. It's like saying, "Hey, that car is black." "Why?" "Because it's black."
