Yeah this is kind of where I’m landing, is it a good value trade? No, almost certainly not. Would I rather have Detmers for Ayers/Kepley +? 100%. But boy am I glad that 60% of starts will no longer be going to Assad, Rea, and Peterson.

I definitely have all three of Hartshorn, Ayers, and Rojas sitting in the same bucket. In front of that bucket I have a big sign that says “Will trade for pitching.”

I’ll admit to suffering some PTSD from last postseason but that two of our three locks to start playoff games are Boyd and Shota doesn’t inspire me with confidence. One more SP to throw into the mix in the next 80 minutes, rental or controlled, would be really nice. Holmes or someone of his ilk/Gausman/Boyd/Shota isn’t the 90s Braves by any stretch, but they can generally keep you in games. And if the wheels come off one of them down the stretch, you can dip into the depth of Cabrera, Peterson, some sort of Brown/Steele piggyback scenario, etc.

There’s as good a chance that we’re selling low on Ayers next trade deadline as there is that he’s a significant contributor to the big league club. Meanwhile the 4 guys we’re penciling into our 2027 rotation have combined for ~140 big league innings this year.

They would have had the same exact opportunity to negotiate with Skubal in the offseason whether or not this trade took place. Tonight, they traded for two months of him. Nothing more.

Eh, agree somewhat, but their third starter currently is Colin Rea. Cabrera is hurt and when healthy was getting squared up every time out, we know Steele won’t be starting when he returns, and as much as I would love to lock in May/June Ben Brown when he returns, that’s a gigantic question mark. Boyd and Shota wore down at the end of last year. Soroka and Horton went down post-deadline after it was too late to add anyone of substance. I agree they don’t need depth pitchers (Rea, Assad, Peterson are your depth pitchers in an ideal scenario), but grabbing two starters you can count on in the playoffs given all of the above isn’t silly. I don’t think it’s a necessity, but I do think it would be wise. There are other scenarios I could talk myself into, but I’m far more comfortable with the cavalry of injured pitchers serving as bullpen reinforcements and going big on the rotation.

Kinda pokes a hole in your entire premise when 8 PAs can swing someone 6 points and the cubs have three guys two points away from your arbitrary cutoff.

Ok one more. Rushing’s wRC+ dipped from 124 at EOD 7/23 to 118 EOD today after a 1/8 weekend with no xbhs. For the purposes of this exercise, let me know if he should be removed or if we should add Busch, Conforto, and Ramirez and their 118s to the Cubs count. Also if we get to include Hernandez’s 799, can we also include Triantos’ 484 and Dean’s 177? If so, the Cubs have an astounding 7 players with at least a 118 wRC+. To put that in perspective, that’s only one less than the 1927 Yankees.
