  1. I find it amusing how you make two posts saying how baseball is random and is poorly described by stats, and then go and end your post by saying that the reason the cubs are bad is because they have low OBP. Also, i would like to meet these four or five good high OBP players. I can think of two good obp guys for the cubs this year: Barrett and Walker. And one who is decent: Murton (and he's in a downward obp spiral) corner infielders
  2. It was the last sentence's philosophy that made Corey so bad with the Cubs. Not to mention the fact that he really wasn't that good at it. Except that's not really a fact at all. Actually, the exact opposite is true.
  3. An old man was asked, while lying on his deathbed, "Old man, if you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?" The old man sat up and said, "I wouldn't have taken it so serious."
  4. I think that is right: Z = 07' Prior = 08' Correct. That will change after January. Extension for Z?
  5. It was brought about by another thread.
  6. I don't recognize the name, and BA has him with 1 IP at AA this year, while on the AAA roster now.
  7. one good start by marmol and marshall's 4.43 era remind you of prior's near cy young season and wood's 14 win, 3.19 era and amazing pitching down the stretch leading the cubs to the postseason? that's some imagination you got there. While I agree it's a stretch. He's just basically excited to see some pretty decent young guys step up and possibly be our pitchers next year. Don't put a downer on that please!! You have to remember also that marshalls ERA is inflated by that one inning where he gave up like 6 or 7 runs. He's had a handful of only giving up 1-3 runs per game. 4 of his 12 starts he's been pretty bad(4 ER/4.1 IP, 4 ER/5 IP, 9 ER/3.2 IP, 7 ER/3.1 IP), so it's not like one or two outings are really skewing his numbers.
  8. Wouldn't want to waste those 4 steps to the phone on the wall from your seat on the bench.
  9. Seeing that on replay just killed me. It was on the inside of the post too, but there was enough spin to counter the round post and send it back.
  10. I saw from the 25th minute til the 3rd goal at lunch, and I just finished watching the Ghana-Italy game on tape. We're boned. No doubt we were the worst team in the group today, although that's partly a reflection of the group. I like Marco's comment about lacking creativity, because that's what it was. We had a lot more possession, but everytime we'd go to make a move we'd play a predictable ball, a poor one, or both. CZR really capitalized on their opportunities too. Beasley pretty much disappeared, but I have to say Pope was the worst player I saw today. Not only was he poor at his job of defending, but he kept playing terrible balls forward that either couldn't be handled, or gave away any advantage we were gaining. I was also pissed that Dempsey never came in, because he can help with that lack of imagination. I guess Arena thought Convey would be a good matchup on that side, but after halftime it was blatantly clear he wasn't getting anything done, and Wolff warming up(and I assume came in, I didn't see the last 14 mins) was even worse.
  11. Soriano - 2006 Home: .305/.397/.705/1.101 Away: .301/.344/.556/.899
  12. Marmol has been mixing in a change in his outings.
  13. I think that is right: Z = 07' Prior = 08' Correct.
  14. I know, and that's because this drops a bomb on part of the Patterson arguments, of which we are on opposing sides. Okay, then I'll just see what his numbers are when I take out his outs. Looks like he's sporting a 1.000 OBP, pretty good if you ask me. And for the third time, no one said the bunts were bad. You're bombing an argument that isn't even being made.
  15. And that's exactly what I just said you can't/shouldn't do.
  16. Casey's career numbers would probably be a career year for Murton if/when he doesn't develop power, so he'd be worse than that on the whole, which is pretty unacceptable for a corner OF.
  17. No one ever had a problem with Corey bunting, as long as it was in conjunction with what the O's are doing with him now, not as some attempt to mold him into the "prototypical leadoff hitter". And you can't simply remove his bunt hits in a vacuum and say he'd be crap without them, not that anyone doesn't want him to bunt anyways.
  18. Getting bunt hits does not = slap hitter. Corey has been a good bunter in the past and not utilizing that ability at least on occasion would be stupid. As has been backed up with quotes from Elia, they had Patterson work on just hitting line drives, not trying to avoid strikeouts, and slap the ball around on the ground.
  19. We need another guy who can't stay healthy? I'll take Drew while I'm at it. You're setting yourself up for lots of Neifi and Bynum. Well in my fantasy world where Hendry understands that those two guys are good, neither of those two are ever to be seen wearing anything related to the Cubs ever again, under the pain of death.
  20. Haren doesn't have postseason experience starting, but he's been good(better postseason ERA than Mulder) when he has pitched. Also, September was Haren's best month last year.
  21. We need another guy who can't stay healthy? I'll take Drew while I'm at it.
  22. Free Mike Wuertz
  23. petition to ban rolleyes
  24. People who need an excuse not to like him, and have no other proof besides the (unfortunatley) accepted myth that he is a poor defender. Walker is a poor defender, that's no myth. He's a poor defender if you compare him to guys like Castillo/Hudson/Igauchi/, but with other 2B, Walker a mere average defender. He does the job at 2b, IMO, and that is all that counts. No, he's pretty easily below average. By all accounts, I love having him on the team, and his bat more than makes up for any defensive shortcomings, but let's not fight hyperbole with hyperbole. Walker's decidedly below average as a defender. How is he "decidedly" below average? He's easily worse than most second basemen. Whether you want a quantified example(John Dewan's +/- rankings in his book The Fielding Bible) or a scouting report on his defensive shortcomings, they agree that walker is not good defensively.
