  1. That'll do, Mule: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5/1 K/BB
  2. The Cubs just had their starter wipe out the side on 7 pitches and then score 2 runs while pushing the opposing starter to nearly 40 pitches. If your instinctual response to that inning is lamenting what didn't happen, maybe reconsider how that mindset can rob you of a lot of enjoyment in watching sports.
  3. They must be really done with Mervis to burn Mastrobuoni's 2nd callup of the season 5 weeks in just for him to be on the chopping block in 7-10 days.
  4. I'll go ahead and say it: They should do that tomorrow too.
  5. "Mervis and someone else(Shaw/Nico/etc) for pitching" is impressive with how concisely it communicates the person is unserious in their opinions
  6. That could work, but counting on Leiter, who has still pitched 3 of the last 5 days and hasn't thrown more than 21 pitches since August, to get 5 outs before running out of steam is a very narrow path. And then you're likely bringing in one of those same options into a dirty inning, and potentially against a worse matchup than the right on right combo Counsell had set up.
  7. It's a matter of what you want to borrow from. Counsell has loosened up the reins a little bit along with just getting better production, counting today the starters have averaged just over 6 IP/GS the last turn through the rotation. The problem they have now is twofold. One is that they have a long stretch without off days, and by pushing to 100+ pitches, especially for guys who are not built up to do so(basically everyone for various reasons), you are going to see their next start suffer without a 5th day of rest, which can't exist. The other is that the rotation injuries have depleted the quality of the relievers they can turn to. If Wesneski and/or Brown weren't in the rotation, then they'd be the ones more likely to get leverage outings(and probably eating up more outs) than guys like Brewer, Palencia, or Little.
  8. Neris and Almonte are down, and Keegan is almost certainly down given his usage. So you need 2 innings between Leiter, Brewer, Alzolay, and maybe Palencia on a back to back(when he just gave up the lead). No perfect option.
  9. gotta be demoralizing to get BABIPd when trying to work on mechanics
  10. I was thinking maybe Leiter 4 out save if Lovelady gets those first 2.
  11. I kinda didn't think he'd get the 6th, but at the same time, if you're fairly confident Steele is going Monday, and there's another off day on the horizon so you don't have to worry about his next outing being on 4 days rest..
  12. That ball from Dansby is a HR for the rest of the year in about 3 weeks
  13. It seems clear to me that Happ is currently slumping(and maybe banged up), but overall I think there's some environmental factors too. League-wide IsoP is down 20ish points so far(full season to partial season), and playing most games in April Wrigley plus series at SD, SEA, and NYM aren't great for power either. If he's still hovering around a league average line come the all-star break I'll be more concerned, but lots of weird stuff happens in a 30 game sample.
  14. I'm a small bit surprised at the aggression with Steele. He had a longer layoff, wasn't particularly sharp in his rehab outing, and his velo was down. But we've seen from Keegan that's not necessarily proof it will continue if there was an intentional reason, so hopefully with the bright lights and no physical limitations he can pick right back up.
  15. 2 of the hits were the last 2 hitters he faced, leading off the 6th inning. 3 of the hits are listed on Gameday as not leaving the infield, and 5 of the hits are listed as ground balls. I think it's fair to say he was in control, at least until he ran out of steam.
  16. When he first came up we all wondered if Happ was a secret serial killer, now we know whose dogs he offed to keep his dark passenger in check.
  17. Stuff like Thompson trying to underhand after bobbling a slow roller is fluky, but a team playing Morel and Busch at the corners is not the same as the built-on-defense identity of the 2023 team, for better(offense) and for worse(defense). The baserunning thing I haven't even noticed a big issue with the decisions, in those close and late situations there's way more instances where you want to put pressure on the other team to make a play, and sometimes they make a play.
  18. they should overturn it just to try to break Mendoza's brain
  19. You can't spell Damage without Nick-e Madrigal
  20. Neris blowing away Nimmo/Marte/Martinez, just like we anticipated
  21. TIL the helmet actually counts as an extension of your body if you're holding it on the base
  22. Or have I been incepting you all for months?
  23. lol and then Morel obviates it by hitting one to the moon
