  1. Zobrist's pitch recognition is so incredibly good What percentage of hitters swing at that 3-2 curve, 80? 90?
  2. '08 Cubs were T-5th in wRC+ v. LHP '04 Cubs were 23rd
  3. Why not both? It's a day game after a night game for one. Also because Contreras is one of the hottest hitters in MLB and he's a much better defender behind the plate.
  4. A little surprised that Avila is starting tonight, I figured he'd start tomorrow against the tough RHP and catch his former teammate Quintana. Godley does have more LH-friendly splits though.
  5. Rucker getting BABIP'd a bit(10 H, 0 XBH), but 4/0 K/BB and only 1 ER through 6. He's going out for the 7th.
  6. You seem to be assuming there was zero communication/coordination between the Cubs and Bartman prior to the simultaneous announcement and Bartman's prepared statement. The odds of that being true are miniscule.
  7. If I can nitpick, are they? I mean, they have undeniably pitched well, and I believe in a couple of those guys to various extents, but I'm also getting a bit of a first half Brewers offense vibe. There's some indicators that make it at least somewhat sustainable, but color me extremely skeptical that Zack Godley is going to run a .256 BABIP going forward. I do like the half of their offense that is good though, and it doesn't take much to tip a playoff series. I just don't know if the roster design is particularly well suited for upsetting one of the 3 divisional mainstays. EDIT: They also just started a brutal back half schedule. 16 games in August against the Cubs, Dodgers, and Astros. September is a bit better with only 10 against the Rockies and Dodgers(and none after 9/15), but if one of the Central teams gets hot I could see their wild card seat getting pretty hot by the last 2 weeks of the season.
  8. 40 man was at 39 before the trade, so it was at 40 after with the removal of Candelario. Only moves were Grimm and Caratini to Iowa.
  9. laughed way too hard at Willson throwing his whole body into that throw and Rizzo not even pretending to make a play on the runner for him
  10. Mekkes got smacked around, gave up his first (three) runs at Myrtle Beach. Maples had 4 K in 1.2 IP, but 3 H and a walk leading to a run and loss. In happier news, Burks has 2 walks and a double, and DJ Wilson is 2 for 3 with a 3B and walk.
  11. I don't think you can get both, but if you can then it would be up to the scorekeeper's discretion, like all 3+ inning saves.
  12. I don't know if I've ever seen Goldschmidt not drive in a run in scoring position
  13. I kinda wanna see a closer replay, Contreras may have been safe almost accidentally
  14. Candelario certainly wasn't going to get meaningful MLB at bats to change his perception, and the minor league season only has a month left. Plus Candelario has cooled off considerably after a high-BABIP April. He's also had nearly 650 PA at AAA so it's not like there's still some waiting to see how he reacts to the level. His value had only one place to go between now and the offseason, and it wasn't up.
  15. Yes, The Cubs paid more because Quintana is better and more durable.
  16. how do you say surrender cobra in japanese, asking for October
  17. Okay I lied, my new favorite thing about the Brewer attitude is the idea that 3 years from now everyone on the Cubs will be old and/or expensive and they'll have no farm system to replenish with. They say this immediately after the Cubs traded Eloy, Cease, Candelario, and Paredes. The only one of those guys who had played a professional game 3 years ago is Candelario, and he was en route to a .667 OPS between A- and A+.
