  1. Does this kind of kill the theory that we won't announce the pitching coach hire before the WS is over? Yes and no. Doing so on an off day isn't an accident, so if it's not done today, then it has to wait til Monday or after the WS(assuming those aren't the same day).
  2. So I guess Mallee(and Gary Jones) are gone? [tweet] [/tweet]
  3. I turned on the Fire game for a few minutes last night. Saw the first two goals for NY and wow was that some bad goalkeeping/defense. Also, NY has some absolutely hideous uni's. Good lord. The length of the MLS schedule can be cruel. The Fire got out to such a good start, then only 17 points in 15 games after the Gold Cup break. In hindsight, probably not too surprising given how terrible they were last year, but with a couple small reinforcements they should be playoff caliber again. You aren't kidding about the goalkeeping though, yikes x2.

  5. Unceremonious exits from the playoffs for the Fire and Earthquakes last night, yikes.
  6. He also seems to think Russell is the most likely gone by some of his comments. God I hope he’s wrong and just being his usually dumb self. I will say that if they're going to trade Russell, it's going to be going big, like the Archer possibility he mentioned. I don't see Russell getting traded for the next version of Drew Pomeranz or w/e. With that in mind I can see that being an outcome, but I don't think Cameron's confidence/insistence is a good barometer of how likely it is.
  7. I generally like his thought processes, but he's one of those personalities that has suffered from having his opinions being exposed to the wider internet for so long. The idiots have made him immune to self-reflection, thankfully he's a bright enough guy that he doesn't have too many bad first opinions that end up sticking.
  8. How do we get Dave Cameron into the GM's chair in Seattle:
  9. I'm a little surprised there's this much discussion about Big Cat and PFT. I've never seen anything entertaining or insightful from either of them. I'm not a podcast person though, so maybe they're audio savants?

  11. Lackey signed a 2/32 deal at age 37, and that was 2 years ago. I'm not exactly over the moon about paying Chatwood in particular that money, but that is the going rate for FA SP with question marks, especially if it's not a long deal. FA SP with question marks but still a very good bet to throw 180+ innings. Lackey got paid to chomp down on innings. I don't know if that's the going rate for a guy who has never gone past 158. That's fair, and Lackey was coming off a strong year. My larger point is about calibrating the expectations on what FA SP are going to get in general, I'm not sticking up for Chatwood in particular.

  13. I don't see him taking Hinske's spot, but I think him as bench coach (if Martinez leaves, obviously) makes a ton of sense. Bench coach is a job with a bit of prestige, I'd be surprised if they moved Ross straight to it given he hasn't done any coaching before. If we're talking about outcomes that get Ross on the MLB staff, Borzello to bench coach and Ross to catching instructor makes the most sense to me.
  14. So the obvious solution is to play half the season between December and March and abandon the nicest weather of months of the year in the process? December/January in NY, Boston, Philly, Denver, Chicago, Cascadia, Canada, SLC, and Minnesota would be miserable. More than half the league! I've seen some compelling cases for the clasura/apertura model from Mexico and S America which is essentially shorter seasons that straddle the bad weather period. Interesting, I hadn't heard about this. Sounds very similar to how MiLB leagues do a first and second half champion. I wonder if that would help or hurt MLS's minor problem with the regular season being kinda meaningless until summer.
  15. I do think there's probably a pro-rel path to be paved eventually if the right people really push for it, but I have a hard time seeing the schedule thing happen until global warming really picks up the pace. 16. yeah maybe he'll call em all up, see if they're interested
  17. "per source, Cubs willing to do exact thing Theo said they might do in press conference 2 days ago"
  18. The issue with adding a guy for the top of the order is - they need to be pretty good to be worthy of those PA over existing options - there aren't a ton of those types of guys who might be available. Maybe Yelich is available in trade, maybe Cain holds up in his 30s, but outside of that there aren't a wealth of established hitters. - in order to get such a person they'd require non-trivial assets - there are other priorities that might need those assets that are more pressing If they manage to land Otani that makes things easier. Without Otani that requires some impressive trade jujitsu to fit in.
  19. These are table stakes for being a manager, doing them isn't worthy of credit and praise, but to avoid being fired mid-season.
  20. Probably based on the quote from Joe saying that he likes all the coaches and wanted them all back. Either way it's silly, it's not like they waited for jobs to dry up before taking action, they were still playing less than 48 hours ago.

  22. This is going to sound like a rationalization, and to a certain extent it is, but I think the variability of pitchers leads to pitching coaches getting a bit more credit than they deserve. I mean think of the pitching coaches that many fans are aware of for their success outside their own team. Off the top of my head I can list off Bosio, Rothschild, Searage, Cooper, Warthen, Maddux, past guys like Duncan and Black. On the other hand I don't think I could name 3 MLB hitting coaches.
  23. He carried on about how the ball sticking to his chest protector was cheating, and also suggested the fix was in with the signs behind home plate (recall Baez losing a ground ball in them)
  24. I'm surprised. If you want to craft a narrative, Bosio made the org look bad with the accusations he made about Molina and especially Thames early in the season. Theo did mention organizational issues related to the number of walks given up, so maybe Bosio wasn't on the same page. Contreras being a newer catcher and calling so many games seems like a significant factor though. That alone doesn't strike me as 'get rid of him' material, and maybe there's a bit of a Renteria-esque scenario with Maddon's former pitching coach now on the market, but probably more to it than we can publicly deduce.
  25. much better now, 3 good looks including a ball off the post in the last 5 minutes
