  1. One last fun Dempsey thing, he had personalized handshakes with most all of his Sounders teammates. [tweet] [/tweet]
  2. If the Cubs go 15-14 to end the season, it means the Cardinals need to play at a 110 win pace to tie and 116 win pace to win the division. The Cardinals are closer to 5th in the wild card race than they are to the division lead. The Cardinals have played at a 126 win pace in August and gained 3 games on the Cubs.
  3. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hillbo01.shtml that boy ain't right
  4. yeah but now we can say 'dangit bobby' when he screws up so this is a net positive
  5. brutal is an exaggeration. it's a long trip against solid teams, but they also aren't playing any legitimately good teams other than the 1 in atlanta. My definition of brutal is a combination of number of cities, number of games without an off day, and potential solid pitching against us. We are playing well and should perform just fine but this will be a grind. In 48 hours or so they'll not only have an MVP caliber player back(giving them 10 quality players for 7 positions), and they can have like a 12 man bullpen. They'll still have some middle innings risk by having a few more innings eaten up by the likes of Rosario or Maples, but on the whole it's pretty tolerable, especially compared to a similar stretch that doesn't come in September. Montgomery re-enters the rotation tonight too.
  6. http://replygif.net/i/512.gif edit: okay that last graf is pretty good
  7. I don't watch Toronto FC a ton, but I believe he did it in emergencies last year and more often this year. Probably because TFC has been hammered by injuries + fixture congestion so there's more times where that's been needed.
  8. I'm struck by how few of these are penalties, only 8 by my count.
  9. Can you get whatever the Yankees or Dodgers have set up out of market or are their networks only available in market? I’d guess us out of market couldn’t get it and still would need to do MLBTV or Extra Innings or whatever it’s called through Dish/Direct TV to watch games. It would be sweet if you could get their network through an app/online or through Direct TV/Dish. In my experience, some satellite packages have a bunch of out of market RSNs, and while you can watch the programming the live games are blacked out. A Cubs network wouldn't do anything to out of market fans ability to watch games unless it really broke from convention(e.g. Cubs opting out of MLBAM revenue sharing and having their own streaming package, which MLB may not allow anyway).
  10. Using the dodgers deal, which is such a terrible deal for the networks that it has led to massive blackouts, seems like a really bad benchmark when the team would be bearing the risk of starting the network. From some cursory googling, you would basically require ESPN-esque carriage fees with similar adoption in the chicago market to justify that 160 million payout.
  11. How do you figure this is true? The Cubs will be paying the full $20 million if they exercise the option and should have all of that hit their number. He's saying that 6 million of that 20 hit Hamels' luxury tax number over the duration of his deal in the form of his buyout already, so it'd be double counting to not have it deducted when the option is exercised. Texas paying the money isn't the relevant bit, that doesn't change anything from a luxury tax perspective. This is a spot that I've never had super high confidence on, so I'm not positive of the answer myself.
  12. He has a 12/1 k/bb in MLB, and had about an .820 ops in 550+ pa at aaa before that line this year. Ok? A top 100 prospect hit well in his first turn in AAA at 22 and got better, and is hitting well in MLB and that is somehow unexpected I guess? Your doomboner for Javy must be raging. You're heavily implying that O'Neill is just a 3+ win player now like we all should've expected, come on. I'm not going to be bending over backwards to credit a rival hitter, but the guy has a 38% K rate and 3% walk rate and prior to this year had never had a MiLB K rate below 26%. He's not some absolute nobody, but the idea that he's just continuing on his trajectory in a way that's going to make him a consistent 3+ player is nonsense on both accounts. If you're trying make the comparison to Baez it's basically an admission of that, because the answer to that is that Javy has never made any sense, and relies on insane physical tools and elite infield defense to be any good. And even then this is the only year where he's crossed 3 WAR.
  13. I don’t see O’Neil being a perennial 3-4 WAR guy An athletic 23 year old OF that hit .311 .385 .693 1.078 in AAA shouldn't surprise anyone. He has 1 WAR in 92 PA, was a top 100 prospect multiple years and has a good MiLB track record. It's OK to say he might actually be a pretty good player even though he's a Cardinal. He has a 12/1 k/bb in MLB, and had about an .820 ops in 550+ pa at aaa before that line this year.
  14. josef martinez plays like the kidnappers will only release his family if he scores more goals. what a lunatic
  15. Because Zobrist has been 48 years old since he was 16.
  16. please forgive me some momentary crotchetyness, but Murphy you better get your Aldi-brand-Hunter-Pence joints to second base next time instead of just staring at Javy
  17. I would like to gently suggest that of those 7 players, that Bote is never any higher than the 5th best option. Against LHP Almora, healthy Russell, and probably both of Happ/Zobrist are better options, and against RHP Schwarber, Happ, Zobrist, and Murphy are better options. As resident La Stella stan I don't think he's far from Bote against RHP too.
  18. He did get investigated for a night club fight under the domestic violence policy: https://deadspin.com/report-mlb-investigating-yasiel-puig-under-new-domesti-1744954552 I think it went away like the Starlin stuff did though.
  19. did I miss the day it came out that Clevenger runs a puppy mill or something
  20. Can somebody recap? I refuse to go to that board. A couple people excited the Cubs/Theo are draining all their resources, followed by more people/facts pointing out that they gave up nothing to get Murphy and are surprised/miffed that's what it took.
  21. baseball wise this is fine, you don't absolutely need it since Happ and Zobrist aren't horrific infielders(even La Stella if you think he can turn it around), but a high contact hitter of Murphy's pedigree for a non-prospect is only going to help the cause politics wise it's good that Murphy appears to have made some progress since his original opinions, but Cubs fans hurt by those opinions don't owe him forgiveness and it sucks they have to deal with that dissonance now.
  22. Anyone else remember the 'Nelson will be back in the rotation in June' headlines before spring training? I still can't believe those were written, he tore his labrum in September.
  23. His batting stance/swing always looks just a little off Pokemon weirdo Might’ve hit his ex wife Shoulders too wide
  24. They led 2-0 in the 6th and lost by a run, I'd be more surprised if they didn't feel that one got away. That said, the Nationals as a franchise are getting really good at coulda, woulda, shoulda-ing against the Cubs, going back to the 4 gamer in 2016 when they blew a lead in like every game, and of course last year.
  25. he's buddies with Arrieta
