Which makes their play before this stretch look even worse. Despite some decent play recently, they are closer to the worst record in the league (5 games back) than the division lead (10 games back) It's just regression to the mean. They aren't as bad as then and they aren't as good as now. They are a 70ish win team with micro bursts of awful and great. It doesn't look worse or better when viewed from a distance. It's possible that's true, but they're at a 70 win pace now and have had to deal with an abnormal amount of injuries and would have 3 more wins(a 79 win pace) with neutral one run luck. The only significant overperformance I can see that's lasted longer than 2 weeks worth of games has been Willson and Thompson, and those have been plenty balanced out by several disappointments so I'm not sure I see anything unsustainable happening. The schedule doesn't appear to have been extra kind to them nor does the rest of this month look particularly daunting. I think there's a plenty reasonable argument for this being a ~78 win team give or take a few, which is of course not the end goal, but a lot closer to the platform that you would hope this season would be back in March.
I really don't want this to be a thing that we figure out with Contreras, but I'm curious what the expanded postseason does to the in-season trade market. There's like maybe 5 teams who need more than an above average 2 weeks to stay within touching distance of the playoffs, which might limit suitors. I don't know if it'll increase buyers because the payoff isn't as great, but it might inch up prices for the best trade targets because those top teams still want the upgrade and there's likely to be fewer of them available.
I could be wrong but I think every team has a similar stretch this year due to having to reschedule the first week of games this year. In this case both DH this week are replacing games from that 1st week Monday's double header was from a rainout in the opening series. Saturday's was previously scheduled.
I'm so impressed with his plate discipline, he's gonna have a lot more staying power with the types of pitches he isn't chasing, especially in a more reduced role down the line. On an unrelated note, Yelich is 5 months older than Contreras and he's physically playing like he's a 35 year old who caught for a decade. He looks toast.
Wait, did Heyward get "skipped" in the batting order? No he was the last spot in the order to commit an out, then Madrigal stepped up and Hoerner got picked off.
I turned the game on 15 minutes ago and in that time I've seen Willson get thrown out trying to extend a single into a triple, collide with Norris on a pop up away from the shift, and throw down to first to make sure Rowdy Tellez wasn't getting any ideas of taking extra bases. Wouldn't be surprised if he tries to take an at bat left handed.
Joe Scally looks like a computer generated composite of the average business major but he stepped on the field and gave Hakimi the business so he's cool with me
Matt Doyle is fond of saying a variation of "xG doesn't know how to handle players who consistently kick the hell out of the ball" and Weah is proving it in real time
Big game for both Long and Aaronson. Morocco should be more defensive/countering but at greater than CONCACAF quality, Aaronson hasn't been able to get on the ball as an 8 and will have to today. Long will have to prove he can still defend in space like Berhalter wants(and is at least part of why Brooks was banished).
They probably could just call up Espinoza to start as the 27th man again so they don’t have to make a 40 man decision. Yeah I'd guess Mills or Espinoza. I think they'll probably wanna be careful with the 40 man until next week with those two off days. Leiter is also on the roster and hasn't pitched since he was recalled on Sunday, which is maybe telling of the intent to start him.
AAA filler who they're probably very comfortable DFA'ing at the end of the week. Kind of surprised it's not Leiter or Menez, maybe they're just not as stretched out? Leiter was already called up to backfill Miley for his IL stint.
I wonder if Anderson Espinoza finds himself in the pen soon. He's only gone more than 4 IP once(that was 5 IP), and he's given up 3+ runs in 5 of his 8 outings. 6 HR in under 30 IP. I don't have splits on if he's starting strong at all, but considering his age and not having many options left, might be time to meet his future today.
I mean I guess its fine to give them credit, but we're talking about them doing something that like 25 other teams are also doing. Yes it would be very Cub like to be one of the handful of teams not doing it though I guess as the Cubs seem completely incapable of doing the right thing. Not gonna tell you how to interpret this, but only 11 teams were doing both(EXST pay, own bedroom in every affiliate) according to the Twitter account: https://twitter.com/MiLBAdvocates/status/1529972093047169027/photo/2
