  1. What trash did we get in return for Patterson again? Nate Spears has a .225/.329/.239/.568 line at Daytona! Well, excuse me while I clean up my drool. Yuck! The other player we got for Corey, Carlos Perez, has this line out of the Daytona bullpen... 13 IP, 26 H, 3 HR, 14 BB, 14 K, 10.38 ERA For those scoring at home, that's a 3.08 WHIP.

  3. The Cubs need to gain more slugging. They have enough single's hitters. They'd gain over 200 points in ops, and Cedeno looks like he can be an adequate leadoff man. If Cedeno was struggling, I'd be pretty hesitant to deal off Pierre, but the Cubs need a shake up and a lot more power. They don't need to gain 200 points of OPS out of their CF. If the team wants to upgrade OPS production, you do it in RF or SS. 200 more points of OPS would put the position at .775, which is average to slightly below average so far this year.
  4. Sweet! Go long....

That's with SP performances of 4.1, 3.2, and 6 IP in those games. It's pretty much impossible to overwork a 7 man pen.
  6. I assume that he didn't just say it in the paper. I assume that what he said "to the paper" was a paraphrase of what he told his team. If you think that there's zero chance of players taking something like that seriously, then why even have a manager? If your players respect you, I do believe they'll listen, and maybe even (gasp!) "try harder". It's a dangerous assumption to make. Many coaches berate players in private while not bashing them publicly. And besides, think about what the criticism is. It's not basketball or football where increased hustle makes an extraordinary difference. Increased concentration and commitment almost always make a difference. The Cubs concentration sucks, and has for years. That's why you see so many crappy outs on the basepaths and dumb plays in the field. The players are to blame, yes, but the majority of the blame goes to Dusty, IMO. EDIT: And how the heck do you know that increased hustle doesn't make a difference in baseball? That's nonsense. I don't buy that a coach ripping the team in platitudes is the difference between them losing a series and then going on a winning streak. And calling out a team in that nature is just as likely to make players press as it is to increase concentration and commitment. You can't hustle your way into hitting a line drive, or making a good throw to first. Again, I completely disagree. I think holding people accountable has an effect. It may not be as tangible as stats, but there is an effect. We've been down this road far too many times on this bd., but just b/c modern man hasn't figured out a way to measure something does not mean that it does not exist. I think you would admit that you and many others here tend to discard that which cannot be measured through stats. I disagree with that approach. Its provincial. I'm not saying this because there's no statistical backing, I'm speaking theoretically, like I told Soul. Holding people accountable has an effect, but it's not necessarily a positive one. And again, given the nature of baseball compared to other sports(this is why Phil Jackson comparisons are poor examples), I question whether such a calling out of players would be likely to have a positive effect, and even if it does I think the difference in performance is likely to be marginal.
  7. Not as much as was given out in comparison to past suspensions. I don't think this was an attempt to intimidate an umpire, nor do I think umpires are/were/are going to be intimidated by the threat of that. Complete non-issue in my mind, I don't think I can express how little a factor that is. Not condescending at all. This is pretty much an opinion driven situation, and I knew I was going to vehemently disagree with the majority of people with no chance of changing people's minds. That's why I should've stayed out of the thread, and it's why I'm now done with it.
  8. A ravishing .231/.275/.300 seasonal line for Juan after tonight. What a nightmare.
  9. I wasn't talking about a specific situation.

  11. The Post Dispatch is an abomination.
  12. Neifi starts, step one towards me not watching and studying for finals instead.
  13. Trading Prior right now just isn't a good idea. He has more value than you're going to get for him.
  14. I don't believe so. I think it sends a message to him and anyone else that that sort of behavior will not be tolerated. Compared to what? Does he think it will be tolerated if he only serves 25 games? It's way out of line with MiLB's previous decisions in these situations. To what are you comparing it to? When was an official attacked with a weapon? I know if I do that at the local softball game, my ass is fired from my job, and charges are brought against me for battery. Delmon got off easy. When Alcantra kicked the catcher in the face. 6 games. Kicking someone is not nearly as bad as throwing a bat at them. Attacking a player doesn't undermine the integrity of the game like intimidating, threatening, or attacking the officials does. They're not similar incidents in the least. There's no way you can argue that the bat throw was more dangerous or more insidious than what Alcantra did. If the situations were reversed in when they happened and who perpetrated them, people would be calling for the kicker's head too. Undermine the integrity of the game? I knew I should've stayed out of this thread.

When Alcantra kicked the catcher in the face. 6 games. Completely different situation. If Alcantra kicks the umpire in the face, suspension is probably near what Delmon got. You can't compare the two. So the difference between the umpire and the catcher is a 900% difference in suspension?

  19. You do realize that he's batting .311/.363/.432 against righties this year. It's lefties he's struggling against at .140/.178/.140 Murton is .246/.325/.348 against righties. He's not hitting anyone right now. I'm interested to see if those splits are just a reflection of the ton of lefties we saw during the homestand.
  20. I'm resigned to the fact that most if not all managers are going to make similar veteran favoring/sac bunting stupid decisions that Dusty will. On the other hand, I don't know how hard it would be to find someone who has a concept of starting pitcher fatigue.
  21. Chris Shelton: Hey Pudge, did you see the paper with what skip said about the series? It's not very nice. Pudge: Now that I think about it, he's right. I guess I'll try harder.
  22. He is out of options, right? They had to outright him to AAA, which I believe forces them to take him off the 40-man and allows other teams to take him. Oh, that makes this an even worse move.
  23. What's the point in taking Restovich off the 40 man now?
