I'm thinking Kirk Gibson in 1988. edit: I misread the question. Gibson didn't make the all star team (or any all star team in his career) in '88. I'm not sure if any other MLB MVP failed to make the ASG the year he won the award. You should edit again.

In 2008 Pujols was named the DH, so he started that way. If you count that, then in 2007, Reyes started over Rollins. In 2006, Howard didn't start, and Morneau didn't even make the team.
