  1. So then get the Braves deal back on the table and put it in Dempster's hands. It wouldn't be for lack of trying to get fair value from the Dodgers. I may be crazy, but I think that is still a distinct possibility, barring the Braves adding a different SP or the Dodgers ponying up (Webster).
  2. He's 18 in the MIDW and way more likely to stick at SS. Yeah, the perception that Lindor will remain at SS and Baez won't is a huge factor.
  3. You are FAST. So what the hell does that mean? It means he is assuming Dempster gets dealt and that there is no warm, fuzzy, remember the good times, sad to see you go vibe going on. I think everyone, including Ryan, is ready for him to gtfo at this point.
  4. Again - lol wut? No one knows wtf is going on. When whatever it is that is going to happen actually happens, it'll probably be a surprise to all.
  5. It would have been spectacular, well beyond reasonable expectation. I can understand why Epstein was reportedly livid that it fell apart. Yeah he trade raped them, much like he did the padres for Rizzo. I bet he hates seeing Dempster right now. Theo probably has to spit Dempster's name though his teeth when discussing him with other treams.

  7. Len talked about this during a game. Rizzo told him he was just messing around in the cage with different stances and it felt good to him. So send your fruit to Rizzo. It looks like a whiffle ball stance. Which makes it more amazing. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was Eric Davis, whose stance was one of my favorites to imitate when I was tween.
  8. Alex Meyer is better than whatever the Dodgers are reportedly offering I agree, and can't see them parting with him for Dempster. I don't see Nationals as a fit at all unless he's on the table. It'd definitely be an all-in move for them and would hamper the Dodgers and Braves. It might also allow them to cut back Strasburg's regular season IP without suffering a huge dropoff in performance. That said, I'm not sure I see them giving up Meyer.
  9. Again, why do people keep acting as though 1 more year of for 12.5 M would be such an awful thing? Assuming we have any chance of contending, it would be great to come back with something similar to our current rotation and a big bat or two in the mix. Sure, I'd rather get a shiny new prospect or two, but I'd much prefer Dempster for a year than whatever junk the Dodgers want to give us. The 2013 free agent pitching class once seemed plentiful, but in the end, I wouldnt be surprised if it was highlighted by Marcum, McCarthy, and Peavy, all of whom have notable injury histories. You kind of made your own point there, didn't you? We are NOT contending next year. There's not nearly enough talent available thru FA and our system isn't good enough yet to produce multiple superstars coming our way via trade. therefore, even an arm like Gould(who's a kick in the nuts compared to Delgado, but still) means more to us than someone like Dempster putting up a solidish season next year for us at the major league level, when all it's doing is costing us IFA money and draft positioning. I'd prefer Webster, but I agree that Gould is above the "worth it to trade him" threshold. He's a guy I remember being discussed before the Delgado fiasco made us all starry-eyed.
  10. I'm not sure Demp wants to play chicken with Theo/Jed. He's worththe 12.5 for one year, so the question becomes is whether it's more important for him to avoid spending 8-10 weeks in a non-L.A. city or to have his last best chance at the open market. I really think that he'll accept whatever trade (to a contender) he is presented with in the 11th hour. You know his agent will be leaning on him to do so, and he's fresh out of the warm fuzzies in Chicago.
  11. I think Dempster would (if he and his agent are smart) accept whatever trade the Cubs put on the table today/tomorrow. He's having his best season and his last chance for a decent multi-year deal. If the Cubs make the qualifiying offer, no one will touch him, and there's little chance he has as good a season next year.
  12. Frankly, a lot of media types are really kind of dickish on twitter though. If you can find one that even comes close to him, I'd love to see it. Well right now scrolling back through my feed doesn't help much, because Goldstein won't shut the hell up. My problem is less with his attitude and more with the sheer volume of it. It'd be tolerable in smaller doses. When he gets going, 9 of 10 tweets on my feed are from him. he's prolific.
  13. You did it again... :x oh that's what he does man. He's in my head bigtime at this point. I look to make sure he's not in the thread, before I try posting an update. Then I rush it, make typos, and usually give up. It's teh internets version of Steve Sax disease. Here's what you do if you're that worried about it: keep two windows open, one with the post you're composing, one with the thread. Refresh the thread to make sure you won't be sniped the second before you hit the submit button on your post.
  14. He's pretty bad this year; he was even worse in 2010, plus 2009 was a noticeable decline from the previous years as well. There's definitely concerns. Don't get me wrong, I can easily see why teams would want to get him, but I don't think he's a lock as a front end guy. Yeah, he's a guy you wouldn't want to absolutely count on to be any more than an innings eater. His ace type season last year is looking like an outlier.
  15. But would the Braves want him? He hasn't been terrible, but he hasn't been very good (his k/9 is way down). Plus he's owed a ton of money, which may be an issue for Atlanta. And he's a perpetual injury risk. If Beckett stays healthy he should perform at roughly Garza's level. He'll cost more than Garza over those two years but there won't be the long term commitment that comes with Garza. It would depend on what the Red Sox would want in return. If the Red Sox would eat a little salary and the prospect packages offered were equal, I'd probably pick Beckett over Garza. Long term commitment with Garza? Garza is a FA after 2013, Beckett is signed through 2014. Yeah, I didn't explain that very well. I was trying to give Beckett some additional value for having two years left on his contract versus one year of Garza. In order to have Garza a second year, you would have to sign him to a long term deal that will last well beyond two years. Given Beckett's on again, off again performance history, injury history and salary, I think the extra year is just as much a deterrent as it is a perk, especially for a payroll minded club.

  17. He was good last year, but that was sandwiched between a lot of [expletive]. I wouldn't give much up for him, and the asking price has reportedly been kind of high. Apparently Tampa has "cooled" on trading him, probably because GMs are thinking the same thing.

  19. Yeah, try Craig and gut your system. Who cares, if the Cards could get Felix for Craig, which they couldn't, you could then spin him for two Allen Craigs. See the above comment. There was a lot of stupid in the first two pages of that thread, and I haven't even looked at the last two.
  20. I just read some rich stuff over at GRB...Seattle had alleged interest in Allen Craig, and many there thought King Felix could be had for him straight up. More amusingly, many thought he wouldn't be worth Craig. Craig is interesting, but come the [expletive] on. All fans do a bit of this with their own guys, but it's always funny to read.
  21. I'm not the one ranting against cities here, just stating the obvious. The said, people in cities are subject to many environmental factors that people in more rural settings aren't. Despite improvements in pollution levels in cities, there's no getting around that. Of course the reverse is also true, but to a lesser extent. But I do think the day is coming where urban pollutants can be reduced to a level that makes them almost a non-factor. Not in our lifetimes, but before too long. I personally find the direction the food industry is moving in of greater concern.
  22. It's both, really. It makes empirical sense: we can detect cancer better (i.e. a lot of cancer deaths that were previously unexplained and/or attributed to something else are now seen for what they are) and we have increasing incidence of cancer because of the massive increase in environmental carcinogens over the past couple centuries.
