  1. All signs point to the idea that Hendry didn't even try to convince him otherwise. Honestly, I don't think it would have made a difference. The man didn't want to leave, as evidenced by the small amount he took to stay in SD. People can talk about how we don't know for sure, but what we do know is that there was a market for him, he was by far the best corner OF on said market, and he signed for way under market value. You don't need slide rule to figure out the Giles wasn't leaving SoCal unless he wasn't offered any kind of contract there. I'm not defending Hendry, but realistically Giles wasn't coming to Chicago. Is it disappointing he didn't try? Sure it is, but only because it demonstrates the flawed philosophy he has more than a far fetched notion that Giles could be the Cubs RF right now.
  2. Source? common sense. 1. the trib wasn't going to throw down the money. 2. the cubs had to pay giles as much or more than aram. rammy probably wouldn't like that considering his ops is better than giles and he's a lot younger. give giles 3 & 36, and lee probably asks for more than 5 & 65. 3. his family's in sd and you know better than anyone how nice of place sd is. Nah, I asked for a source, not your opinion. If all you can provide is your opinion, then I suppose it isn't "pure fantasy", because your opinion is no better or worse than mine. And just because it can't be sourced doesn't mean it isn't true. All signs point to the idea that Giles never had any real intention of leaving.

Didn't the Cards make him an offer? Giles had nice things to say about STL, and if he didn't take their offer, he wasn't going to take a Cubs offer. He demonstrated what an extreme preference he had for remaining in SoCal by taking the money he did.
  4. After tonight's minor league start the ratio will be 43-7 major/minor starts for Wood since the beginning of 2004, and 75-7 since 2003.
  5. I have been wondering for a while if Juan's insane work ethic and regimen has caused him to burn out.
  6. I can't blame Hendry this year. Two of his top 3 starters haven't even pitched yet, and we don't even know if/when they will. So it's not really a 100 million dollar team nor a very talented one, despite the names we control. This year is just a continuing downward spiral from the previous two. Hendry resigned Neifi for two years. Signed Rusch for two years. He traded for Bynum? He traded for Hairston whom, I'd never have thought possible, has sunk below Neifi in the talent department. He was trying his hardest to trade Todd Walker (imagine this team without Walker...shudder). Jones, Pierre... Imagine this team if he would have seriously went after Tejada and Beltran in the free agent market after the 03 and 04 season. Yes, Beltran had adown year last year but he's looking pretty good lately for the Mets. Beltran will never be worth 2/3 of what he is making. Tejada I agree with.
  7. I have been a big advocate of being patient with Pierre, but the human groundout machine act is getting really old. But as long as he's on this team, he'll be leading off, because of his rep and Dusty.
  8. Then let's just shut Wood now for the season. He will probably get hurt anyway. Isn't it about tiem for Tommy John 2? Wait he changed his mechanics! Call me naive, but...he's had his shoulder operated on, his knee operated on, his elbow operated on...he's never needed any one part operated on twice. There's not much left to fix on him. Here's to hoping he's healthy for the rest of his career! *note the key word "hoping..." He will be healthy with another team cause the Cubs aren't paying him next year. But at least his injury is legit. I thought calfzilla would be able to work through his arm pain. I've got some cyberbucks that say Kerry is still a Cub in 2007.
  9. I am sure for every punk player you identify on the Cardinals, the same can be said by Cardinal fans about your Cubs team. I personally do not believe that Albert is a punk player. You say the vast majority are punks, so name 15 out of the 25 players that are punks. I don't think Albert is a punk, but he does act punkish after many of his homeruns. I also think Aramis does the same thing, but not quite as bad. I don't agree with the LoneStar, but he did say the vast majority of the key players, not the entire 25 man roster. On your squad, the players I think act like punks on the field are Edmonds, Pujols (sometimes). JRod exudes the aura of punk, but that could be perception. I think the only 2 players who anyone could justfiably call a punk are Aramis (sometimes) and Zambrano. So it seems about even.
  10. I have watched some really bad Cubs teams in my time, but I am struggling to recall another stretch of offensive futility like the one we have seen in the past week. If it wasn't so sad it would be funny.
  11. But the baserunning, Vance. Think of the baserunning. After watching Jacque Jones run the bases, we would be better off with Moises in RF. Maybe, but let's not forget what a butcher Moises was in the OF. I do miss his bat, though.
  12. <---------------Nocturnal
  13. I'm not comparing them to the Cubs. With that pitching staff (especially the pen), Cincinnati has perhaps the biggest "bottom falling out" potential of any team who's bottom hasn't already fallen out.
  14. Merkcer was the nicest and least arrogant baseball player I ever met. that's fine. but the way he handled his spat with stone was lame and unprofessional It seems Stone was even more unprofessional. It seems the great "high and mighty" Stone just couldn't handle someone not bowing to him. It was ugly on both ends.
  15. This is just the latest example of Dusty & Co. misusing players. Hawkins as a closer CPatt as a leadoff man Perez in the 2 hole Holla as an everyday player Batting Burnitz in between Lee and Ramirez Macias Jones getting all the starts versus lefties Remlinger used as a LOOGY Each one of these players (except maybe Macias) had a good deal of value when used correctly, but Dusty seems to use guys in the worst and most destructive ways possible, both for the team and the players. Just a few, and it will just keep on going.
  16. I'm going to be honest and say that as much as I liked Harry's enthusiasm, he was brutal to listen to the last few seasons. It may not be a popular opinion, but I was quietly wishing he would quit for a few years before he passed. I thought Chip called a much better game than Harry did at the end, and I didn't like Chip. But like Santo, Harry's iconic status overshadowed the fact that he was painful to listen to.
  17. Stone was/is arrogant and self absorbed, for sure. But he was a very good analyst who was far easier to listen to than Otto, Carter and even Brenly. As far as the whole 2004 fiasco, Stone was out of line. But Mercker, Alou and Co. were being freaking babies. It was an ugly situation on both sides of the equation, exacerbated by the fact the team was in the process of folding like a lawn chair. If Stone's meddling was a significant contributing factor, that doesn't say much for the team. If a person wants to call Stone a meddling, arrogant, self-aggrandizing ass, that's fine. He is. But he is also a fine analyst. Chip Caray however, is a boob in all regards, as far as I can tell. joe carter  haven't seen that name mentioned around here in a while. I really liked Carter, he seems like a great guy. Unfortunately listening to him analyze a game was like having an audio lobotomy.

  19. Marshall has been very good. IIRC though, he hasn't pitched a lot of innings in a season. I have to imagine that doesn't bode well for his longevity this year. Am I wrong?
  20. Apparently Bronson "Barry Bonds" Arroyo can pitch pretty successfully in the NL. Their team is still too weak in the long haul, but they will be problems for a while. Arroyo is a good pitcher, one of the very few they have. I wouldn't be surprised if the stick around until June or early July, but I'll bet they'll be in fourth or lower come late August.
  21. I don't remember that happening too often. Neither do I.
  22. I prefer signing Pena to giving up a good player for Clark. The difference between the two is not enough to give up a good prospect for, IMO. Plus, Tony isn't exactly off to a hot start this season. Maybe so, but I don't think Pena is going to sign with the Cubs, when there are teams that have bigger needs for a 1st basemen. I do think Clark makes more sense for the Cubs then Pena, tho. I think Pena would be well served to sign with the Cubs. He knows he'd get to play everyday for at least 2 months, long enough to show what he's got. He would likely be traded after Lee returns. IIRC, Pena was out of a job for a while before the Yanks signed him, so it's not like he will have a ton of suitors.
  23. The Reds will go away, it's not a question of if, but when. The more losses they hand the Cards and Astros now, the better.
