  1. uh somewhere in this thread theres a point i made where 122 games of JD Drew is a heck of a lot better than 162 games of Soriano in CF. At some point we have to look beyond the stats. I don't care what they say, only having a player 2/3 of the season a a premium price isn't acceptable. The you start dealing with unknowns like when the player is going to be injured, which part of the season will you be missing your high-priced production. The stretch run, the playoffs? IMO, if two players are even in the same area code production-wise, you take the one who will be healthy, every time.
  2. I agree with some of the sentiment, but Sori is 30 right now, not 32.
  3. Because he chose to opt out of his contract? Thats the reason I see. What about the other two? Listen, I know Drew is easily more productive than Sori when on the field, but even Kerry Wood strung together a full few seasons. I'm far from convinced Drew's DL days are behind him. I think giving Drew 3-5 guranteed years at the same price as Lee or Ramirez is at least as high on the lunacy scale as giving Sori 8/136.
  4. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Drew is great, but I think it is just as likely he'll miss 2/3 of a season as play 2/3 of a season in any given year. And yes, I am acutely aware of his past 3 years. If he'd sign an option or incentive heavy contract, I'd be ecstatic to have him. If some other team is willing to give him 15M/per year ona guaranteed contract, I say good luck with that. There is a reason he will be on his 4th team in 5 years.
  5. exactly right. theyre trying to find a random detail that makes soriano better 1 run. When in fact there's the differences in the contracts and the added flexibility lugo would have given us compared to soriano. oh wait i cant assume that lugos contract will be less than sorianos according to jjgman21. Silly me. I give you permission. Now incorporate Izturis's salary sitting on the bench and carry on. Not with Cleveland(Westbrook, Lee) and Boston(outfielders, Crisp, Pena? Manny?) looking for a defensive SS. Do you really think Cleveland would entertain the idea of trading Cliff Lee?
  6. I think the aggregate of Zambrano Hill Prior Miller Meche/Padilla Jennings/Westbrook/Igawa Mateo/Marshall/etc. Would be an average-very good rotation, depending mostly on what Prior brings to the table in 2007. If I were in Hendry's position, I would try and trade for Jennings. If that failed, I would sign Padilla or Meche and bid for and sign Kei Igawa. I would expect the combination of Miller/Prior to comprise on slot in the rotation, leaving Marshall/Mateo/Marmol to take up any injury slack. Zambrano Jennings/Padilla/Meche Hill Prior+Miller Igawa IMO, at least as good as what the Cards ran out there last season.
  7. unrelated, but I was looking at Pie's splits from this year and noticed his BABIP was .342!! That doesn't give me much confidence in his 282 BA. http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?pl=429712 Per that same page, the league average is about 20 points higher than MLB, so it's not nearly as troubling a sign as a major leaguer having a BABIP that high(say, Mark DeRosa). Didn't DeRosa have a high LD% as well?
  8. I know he's not popular, but that seems to be an extreme way of getting rid of him.
  9. Me too. I ham happy to have Soriano, but those years scare me. If 2-3 of them are team/mutual options, that will mitigate things significantly.
  10. Has it been established if any/how many of the 8 years are option years?
  11. Drew has not been injured in the last three years other than breaking a bone by getting hit by a pitch Manny played RF when he was in Cleveland. His arm is better than Murtons, there no reason to think he can only play LF and not RF. I don't care how big of a headcase the guy is if he would be the best or second best hitter in the NL. Matsuzaka, the list had nothing to do with how much the team has to pay for the player, just if they were a top FA or not. The bids to negotiate with him are evidence that he is. ARod may be availabe for a package including Barrett and Pie Cabrera IMO is not available, and if he were we could not get him, but again his list was about players that could be available to counter the claim that Soriano was the top player available. I agree with you about Manny, but NY will want SP for Arod. I love Drew, but there is a reason he will be on his 4th team in 5 years. And no matter what anyone here says, I believe he is just as likely to play 50 as 150 game in any given year.
  12. At least in 6 years market inflation will make this deal look less insane. :D Has market inflation made ARod's deal look good? No, but it looks better now than it did a couple of years ago.
  13. In total contrast to previous offseasons, I think Hendry just wants to get things done ASAP. He gave Soriano a ridiculous contract he couldn't refuse to get him signed and out of the way. The contract is yucky at best, but I like the intensity of this offseason. I wish this mentality and money were around when guys like Beltran were on the market.
  14. I agree. I love that the Cubs have actually signed a top guy, and it will make us markedly better. But I cant help but feel that Sori is going to be a huge albatross in a few years. I was skeptical anyone would give him 6 or 7, much less 8 years. I can only hope there are some options in there.
  15. I'd rather they did this: 2B Theriot LF Murton CF Soriano 3B Ramirez 1B DLee (until back to form, then swap with Soriano) RF Jones CA Barrett SS Izturis Under no circumstances should Izturis start. If he's on the roster and healthy, he'll be starting. Not advocating it, just saying.
  16. Wow, I just saw. That contract is disgusting. I may have given Sori 17M, but for no more than 4 or 5 years. 8 years? UGH. :x
  17. Brush a little garlic butter on the crust right when it comes out of the oven, and it's awesome. Freschetta rules.
  18. I feel no disdain for Alou, but I still don't want him back.
  19. No, but I got wicked sick from drinking too much coke at my 15th birthday party.
  20. Anyone who would vote for Tombstone or Red baron over Freschetta or DiGiorno clearly has issues, IMO. Tombstone was the best like 10 years ago.
  21. Gonzalez isn't an above average defender. I'm confused - this is the Red Sox Alex Gonzalez who should have won the gold glove right? And you don't think he is even above average?? Jeter keeps winning the GG, yet he isn't a very good defensive SS at all. The Gold Glove means next to nothing.
  22. Michigan's D is helpless.
  23. Both.
  24. I want to drink skim, but just can't because it is damn near water. So I go with 1%.
  25. Key lime, just ahead of cherry.
