  1. O RLY? on the cubs' side: soto is way better than kendall derosa at this point is a little better than weeks ramirez is easily better than hall on the brewers' side: hardy is better than theriot fielder is marginally better than lee cameron is better than edmonds/johnson braun is way better than whoever's playing left in soriano's absence hart is probably slightly better than fukudome, but it's close the same mets that trail the brewers by either 5 or 6 games, pending the outcome of their game today? BP has the NL east at roughly a 10% chance of winning the wild card, so your confidence in this respect is unwarranted. DeRosa at this point is more than a little better than Weeks. He's a lot better. Lee has been better than Fielder, even with his horrid month long slump. Other than that, yeah.
  2. The Cubs offense is better the Brewers WITHOUT Soriano. As far as (b) goes, that spot will be occupied by the Phillies or Mets. The Mets aren't that good. For the wild card they are. Stack them up against the Brewers and who would you take? Starters? Maybe a slight edge to Milwaukee. Pen? Mets, easily. Offense? Mets. Their talent hasn't served them well to this point.
  3. I wouldnt be shocked in the slightest if the Brewers still end up going for Maddux. His brother is the pitching coach, and they certainly wouldnt have to give up any Gamels or Escobars. I hope they do. He'd get lit up like a Christmas tree in that park.
  4. People are going to be panicking if Hendry doesn't make a move right away, but we are still a ways off from the deadline. This deal only happened so early because it was obvious it was the best match up they were going to get. I'm not expecting anything for at least a couple weeks. I hope I am wrong, though.
  5. You know we had something like an 8.5 game lead on them not long ago. That ground has been made up during what I believe will end up being by far the Cubs' worst stretch all year. I'm surprised they didn't close more ground.
  6. No, they'll make it. The rest of the NL sucks. They just aren't winning the division.
  7. He's pretty credible. It could be the Indians are simply listening to last minute offers that may be coming in now that the deal seems imminent. I think it's pretty academic at this point, though.
  8. We'll lose 2 of the next 6, max. No Volquez or Lincecum. The matchups are all favorable.
  9. I dont think he'll stink up the joint, but I dont think he suddenly makes the Brewers a lock for the division, or even the playoffs. If Gallardo ends up coming back, then watch out. What? Sheets, Sabathia, Parra, Suppan, Bush=good rotation. Sheets, Sabathia, Parra, Gallardo, Suppan/Bush=watch out. Gallardo's not coming back.
  10. He wasn't going to stand pat before this. I want him to just come out swinging like a madman. Snatch up Harden, Burnett, and Milton Bradley. I don't think any of them would cost all the much. Harden maybe, but his injury history cheapens him a good bit, I think. Right now the Brewers are probably feeling on top of the world. This would send them right back down. Regardless of how they feel, this doesn't make them a complete team. And to be honest, I am kind of scared of Harden. The guy hasn't made it through a season since 2004. I'd hate to use what few trading chips we have only to see his arm fall off in August.
  11. Or Carpenter comes back as his old self. So yeah, pretty much.
  12. I'm not counting on Hill for anything. Me neither. Fortunately, I don't think we'll need him. I think the acquisition of Sabathia makes the Brewers essentially the same team they were before Gallardo was injured, maybe slightly better. Unfortunately for them, that bullpen is going to be their downfall.
  13. Did Melvin fix that bullpen? I didn't think so. Yawn.
  14. I don't see the A's giving up on the season enough to trade Harden. I'm not impressed enough with Harang and think the Reds would want too much for him. Bedard is being skipped in his next start, and the Mariners asking price is too high there. Burnett is probably the best bet. I think Burnett, Wolf or Maddux is it. I'm not certain Maddux would be much of an improvement. Wolf? I'm not sold on him either. I'd rather take my chances that Burnett goes Rick Sutcliffe in a return to the NL. I'm not convinced Maddux would be any help at all. Burnett is probably the best option. There's also the possibility it could be someone nobody has mentioned. Wolf hasn't been that great, and his numbers have been helped by Petco.
  15. It's been all but done for a while now. It will make things tougher, but I am hardly shaking in my boots.
  16. If Laporta/Gamel isn't apart of it, he's not going to Milwaukee. Not True. Milwaukee could put together a package without either of them. Would it be enough to stop the teams like D-Rays/Cubs/Red Sox from getting CC? No. I don't buy the Cubs as a legitimate contender, but if anyone in Brewerland thinks they can outbid the Sox or Rays without including one of LaPorta/Gamel, I need some of what they are smoking. Again, Shapiro is going to get two good picks if he keeps C.C., so what possible reason would he have to settle for anything less than top, ML ready talent? Also, with Pronk's precipitous decline, Shapiro is going to want some ML ready power to slot in, probably at DH. LaPorta fits the bill. Taylor and Escobar do not.

  18. Yes. And even so, I think it will take another player or two. Shapiro is nobody's fool, and he knows he doesn't have to trade Sabathia unless he gets exactly what he wants. Someone will get C.C., but they will overpay to do it (and if it is the Brewers, have ZERO chance of re-signing him). Either way, if the Cubs get one of Harden/Burnett, I'm not particularly worried about it.
  19. What makes this worse for the Crew is that they know the Cubs have to face Lincecum today. An opportunity wasted.
  20. Thanks for taking a break from sucking for an inning, DBacks.
  21. The Crew will either catch us before the ASB, or they won't catch us at all. This stretch of Cubs injuries/poor play is their window, IMO. That seems very tough to do. I could see them making up a game or two but not 4 or 5. Which is why I don't think it will happen. I said the same thing about a week ago (during the O's series, because I anticipated a poor series against the Sox. I thought the Crew would gain more ground over the past week than they did. I just think that if the Cubs still have a lead when Soriano comes back and the Cubs acquire another starter, they won't relinquish it.
