    Going to work not knowing if you or someone else is going to make a presentation and not doing as well as a result is not the same as screwing it up because you don't get along with a couple co-workers. Inconsistency, uncertainty and the effects of poor leadership have been demonstrated time and again to be detrimental in virtually all scenarios. They certainly have more merit than more ephemeral contrivances like "clutch", "grit", "knowing how to win" and chemistry in an individual sport. Lumping all the "intangible stuff" together and saying it all has merit or none of it does is just ludicrous.

    "Chemistry" and morale are certainly overstated by many, but they aren't meaningless, either (IMO). Players are not automatons who will perform at the same level regardless of what is going on around them. But I think the notion that unpredictability and inconsistency from the manager could adversely impact the team has real merit. An idealist might say it would force players to prepare to the maximum every day, but that's not realistic. People take comfort in certainty, and unpredictability almost always has adverse effects. Plus when your leader has a half assed, disengaged approach, that's going to rub off. We can go on about "these players make so much money they should always give their max effort, etc.", but at the end of the day, they are human, and often not that bright. None of this should be surprising, since many here commented on how disinterested and aloof Lou looked late in his tenure. This is just some confirmation of that.

    I found two posts bringing up Peavy's shoulder, not including quotes of the same reference. Most were Kyle. Overall, most hits for shoulder were in reference to Sheets and Zambrano.

    So what is Ramirez being considered for? His bat won't play anywhere else, even as a backup. He's a RH bat that could play at 1B, OF, or emergency catcher, but most importantly as a pinch hitter. Think RH John Mabry. If the team is comfortable with Byrd, Colvin, and Kosuke as CF options and therefore don't need Perez or Johnson as a 5th OF, that spot could go to Ramirez. As for his bat, he's struggled at higher levels so far, but his pedigree is too strong not to take a chance on. I'd personally consider him as a catcher, but I don't think there's any indication the Cubs have done that. What do you think the odds are that neither Perez or Johnson make the team? And has Ramirez taken defensive reps anywhere but catcher this spring? He has a good pedigree, but I've been operating under the assumption he'd have to make the team as a catcher. I can't really see him as an outfielder, though the backup 1B makes sense, if there's a roster spot open.

    Not sure how you're expecting Ramirez to get all that better if he's only getting like 90 PA at best if things go as they should. He doesn't have to. If he gets on base like he always has, you're already ahead of Hill. If he does get better, you've got a really good backup catcher. And I'm assuming more than 90 AB until Soto makes it through a full season.

    Again, you're mixing up Hill's misuse last year with how a backup catcher is supposed to be used. If Soto ends up getting 140 starts as planned then Hill would get, what, 70-75 PA? 80? I agree, Hill stinks. I agree, Hill getting 150+ PA is hideous. Neither Ramirez nor Hill should be getting 150+ PA. Ramirez has a decent minor league track record, and at the very least has shown the ability to get on base at every level. He's younger and cheaper. Koyie Hill has a proven track record of being really bad. Unlike Ramirez, you can't even hope he'll get better. What makes it more bizarre is that Hill re-signed after Ramirez was claimed and put on the 40-man. Ramirez is out of options, so WTH?

    Some people have been overreacting, but given the choice between Hill and Max Ramirez for backup catcher, it's blatantly obvious who the better choice is. Yeah. And if Hill only starts 20-25 games, it's no biggie. Castillo is better off starting in Iowa than riding the pine. But it's a leap of faith to think they'd call up Castillo to start if Soto gets hurt. And it's a leap of faith to think that Ramirez starting in place of an injured Soto would be that much better than Hill (and no, I'm not advocating Hill starting regularly for an injured Soto). 50 catchers had 150 or more PAs last season. In terms of OPS, Hill was #47. He's not just bad, he's abysmal. It's not a leap to think Ramirez would be better.
