  1. Doesn't every team that's vaguely large market want to emulate Boston? I mean since you can't be NYY, then might as well aim for BOS. Sadly enough, I would like to emulate Milwaukee right about now You mean you'd like to see the Cubs purge their farm system in a desperate attempt to cash in at least once before all their big league talent bails? Milwaukee had one of the best farm systems a few years ago, and now it's virtually barren. Besides, Milwaukee and Chicago are two very dissimilar markets, requiring two different approaches. I really think Boston is the best example to emulate. What should make us really angry is how much of an untapped gold mine the Cubs franchise is, and how neglected it has been. I see signs the Ricketts see that and are taking the long view of this thing. We can easily be a NYY/BOS type powerhouse.
  2. ::wrigley23:Soriano ::jeffh:Hendry (more than your average person.) what do all those posters have in common? A trait I hope they share for all eternity.
  3. Which may make him the most effective reliever in all of baseball.
  4. 1) Definitely the team was going to be pretty bad this year no matter who the gm or the owner due to the roster from 2010. But if he cleaned house immediately we probably could have gotten a gm in there who could have actually made some moves in offseason 09 to make the roster better. Explain what another GM would have been able to do before the 2010 season that Hendry couldn't have. I'm not talking not doing something stupid but ultimately irrelevant like overpaying for Grabow...explain what feasible moves that could have been done to actually make the team significantly better than how the 2010 season played out. I definitely wish Hendry had been out at that point, but no GM was going to make the Cubs much different than what we actually got last year and so far this year. I want Hendry out, but this last offseason was one of his best, all things considered. There wasn't much to be done about 2011, though it was largely Hendry who handcuffed himself. The first few months of this offseason will say much more about the Ricketts ownership than the preceding two years.
  5. generic or not, all of these things have blown up in his face will possibly hamper the team's success and growth going forward. Nothing has "blown up in his face." No, things have gone about as they could have expected. I think people are confusing wheat they hoped would happen when the Ricketts took over with what they assume the Ricketts expected. Some people probably expected they would (or could) come in and turn this thing around on a dime, which is painfully naive. These same people probably expect the ownership to echo their own reactionary opinions publicly, which would be terrible business. I've always been amused by people who think they can derive what owners/GMs are thinking just from what they see and hear. You don't conduct your business out in the open just to make your meatball fans feel better. We're not privy to that stuff, nor should we be. Besides, their actions, including announcing plans for extensive renovations and lobbying the state for part of a large sum of money to implement them, says they knew what had to be done. Unless one thinks they didn't know the extent of the needed renovations until after they took ownership, which is just a laughable thing to assume. And lobbying the city/state for funds only seems logical, given the restrictions the team is put under when it comes to renovating/upgrading the facilities.
  6. This helped the Cardinals. I'm never one to root for the Cubs to lose regardless of FLS, but if ever L's are ok it's when they come against the team competing against them for the division lead. I really think the Brewers are taking this division regardless of what happens over the next couple days.
  7. I'm sure the Yankees won't allow the ball to really get rolling. I think we're in for a bloodbath this weekend.
  8. Games like this are why it kills me when people talk about Wrigley like it's nothing but a band box. If this game is played in Milwaukee, the Cubs have three, maybe four homers tonight.
  9. Of course not. The key to statistical analysis is cherry picking, duh.
  10. I still say Corey Hart looks like he belongs in a display at a natural history museum.
  11. What makes Barney's slide worse is that he doesn't walk. .275 would be perfectly acceptable is he was getting on base at a .340-.350 clip. At his current rate, he'd have an OBP under .300 if his average dips into the low-mid .270s.
  12. So what are the odds Quade sticks with Dempster too long tonight?
  13. Nice that Bernie Brewer and the sausages are at Wrigley tonight.
  14. No, and Brenly is giving Quade the business about it.
  15. Pena and Ramirez Maybe he thinks 3-4 games constitutes "significant time".
  16. It's not just the draft pick. I think many are afraid that is the Cubs do well enough that it could be spun that 2011 was a season that could have been good if not for the injuries, it might be enough to justify letting Hendry and Kenney keep their jobs. It is a distinct possibility that if not for that mini "resurgence" at the end of last season, the organization may be a bit further along the road to being good than it is now. It hurts to watch, but if the team isn't going to compete, they might as well just tank. It'll get us a better draft pick, but more importantly, it'll leave little doubt that the FO needs to go. I can bear a 95 loss season if it leads to more light at the end of the tunnel. Letting things malinger like they have is the worst case scenario.
  17. I'm confused. Yeah, that's a head scratcher.
  18. yeah, i saw that one. it's pretty good but different way of spelling Golem. I'm really late to the party here, but what's up with the LeBron is a golem thing?
  19. The Heat folded like a lawn chair in the final minutes.
  20. I had the same reaction, but at his point I'm for whatever makes this disaster even worse.
  21. Many of the roster decisions have perplexed me, but I don't care much about that. Coleman has no future. Still, no reason for Davis to be getting starts with the season in the crapper. I suppose Hendry is still clutching desperately to hope, though.
  22. Yeah, they sent Snyder down. Can't hurt at this point, I suppose. EDIT: Maybe it can. Should have sent LaMaheiu down instead, since he's not seeing the field anyway.
