  1. Berkman and Beltran will make or break next year's team. If Beltran misses 60 games and Berkman reverts to his 2010 form, things could get ugly. Holliday has some uncertainty about him too. I'm pretty confident that Wainwright will come back strong, but Carpenter is a question mark as well. But if most or even half of those things break right, they'll be pretty good.
  2. Curious as to what their future plans hold though. They may have a better farm system than we do but they might not be too far away from looking worse than we do now. What does this even mean? I'm not sure he could tell you. I think what he's saying is that while the Cards have a decent farm system, they're not particularly well set up for the long term. And there is some truth to that, I think.
  3. At two years, I don't think the NTC is a big deal. It's a pretty solid move, provided Carlos doesn't fall apart as he is prone to do.
  4. I'm pretty sure it was November 25th or 26th, somewhere in there.
  5. 2/25. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/12/cardinals-agree-to-two-year-deal-with-carlos-beltran.html
  6. I'm that blogger. It was just a theory (though the Reds' beat writer for the Enquirer thinks Marshall and the Reds could indeed be negotiating an extension) to explain why the names have been under such a thorough lock and key (relative to other deals like this). The names are unknown, perhaps, because they're undecided pending the extension talks. Makes some sense as an explanation to me. But, just a theory. That's all. The only way I could see the Reds extending Marshall for anywhere near what he would likely get via FA is if they make him the closer. The Reds aren't a team I could see paying 7-8MM+ per year to a set-up man.
  7. The prospects may make or break the trade from the Reds perspective. The Cubs already came out ahead. Pretty much. Marshall may be a better pitcher, but this looks to me like 5 years of Wood for 1 year of Marshall. Even if he never amounts to more than a back of the rotation guy, it's a net gain for the Cubs. Any decent prospects would just be icing.
  8. Much more promising than some of the other prospects listed. Works in the low 90's and tops out at 97mph. Seems to have started to figure things out. The other two Coddington and Ward make absolutely no sense. The other name he gave me was Yorman Rodriguez Corcino and Rodriguez. Yes please. You're kidding right? I think you guys need to come way down off your prospects expectations. I wouldn't trade Wood for Marshall straight up as it is, so if it's anything but low level filler guys I'll be surprised. Coddington/Webb makes much more sense. Well, being that you and Jocketty apparently value players differently, what you would or would not be surprised by seems pretty irrelevant. I'm happy with the trade as is and am not expecting much else of substance, but after seeing the Latos trade, I'm not ruling anything out here.
  9. As did I. That's pretty disappointing.
  10. I was particularly a fan of his coming here and rubbing our faces in Corey Patterson's Reds renaissance.
  11. Exactly. And not likely to be worth what he'll get in FA (what it would likely cost to retain him beyond 2012).
  12. That's stupid. Hendry did stuff like 7.5 million for Grabow. This is trading a reliever for a 25 year old pitcher with several years of team control, and we're getting two prospects that haven't even been identified yet. P.S. When was the last time we acquired a pitcher and didn't pass him off as another version of Randy Wells? If it were Hendry, he'd be the on trading young, cost controlled players for the soon to be FA reliever.
  13. I like Marshall, but he's a year away from FA and at the peak of his value. And he's a reliever. If the return is good, this is the sort of move we would complain about Hendry not making.
  14. Marmol is a dicey issue. He could have a strong first half an boost his value, or he could have a shitty first half, confirming that he's damaged goods and obliterating his value.
  15. Even if the goal was to be competitive in 2012 I don't think trading Marshall would be a bad idea at all, for the reasons you stated. And his trade value is pretty damned high right now, so unloading him now might result in a net gain.
  16. The only way he could refute it would be to actually spend some money to add a player of consequence. I'm kind of looking forward to him doing that at some point. So if he bid $50MM, it would still mean he wan't willing to spend?
  17. This situation is different, though. A team trying for Darvish was basically on their own in determining how much of a posting fee a player was worth and offering it. If you weren't the high bid, there was no chance to increase it, and there was no way to know what other teams would bid. It's really an awful process. Unless the Cubs bid a paltry amount, it's hard to really blame anyone.
  18. That's not exactly going out on a limb.
  19. Am I the only one extremely annoyed by the use of the term "front-runners?" You can't be a front-runner in a race that is already over. You are just the winner or you aren't. Front-runners in terms of the opinions (guesses) of "insiders", maybe. But yeah, it's poor terminology.
  20. If they could acquire Garza for surplus players like Rizzo/Blanks, they could give Matt three months to build value in Petco before sending him off to a desperate contender at the deadline for another haul of prospects.
  21. Some desperate boozers actually drink hand sanitizer these days.
  22. If they don't make serious run at him they are punting 2012. So if the Mariners or Blue Jays offer 9/225, what do you do? Punt or sign a stupid contract? At those terms you have to let it go. Having said that, I think you could put together a 5-6 year contract with a higher AAV and vesting options he'd likely take if he wants to come here.
  23. Toronto's one of the best cities in MLB. It's one of the best cities in the world. Unless you really, really hate cold weather, there's not much to complain about.
