  1. The division looks shaky, but then again so does the entire NL. I'd still say advantage Cards. And Houston's been down at this point in the offseason before, only to complete a few deals that puts them right back in it. I still have a hard time believing the Cubs will go to the playoffs this year. But I wouldn't have believed the Cards would even make the playoffs on 83 wins, either. So I guess right now there just isn't enough info.
  2. Minny just took the lead
  3. fricken Havlat. get back already. two close games like this, he probably makes the difference between 2 points and 4 points. He can stay away for just one more game (Saturday). After Saturday I will leave this thread until January 14th. I did notice the game Saturday is going to be on Comcast Sports. I like that. To bad it's a guarantee I will not be able to watch it on January 14th. Stupid Bill Wuerz. Havlat's return: 2 goals so far. Welcome the hell back man.
  4. I think they're just tired. 10 point Minn lead now.
  5. You read my mind; I also thought he was older :D Would love to see him patrolling CF at Wrigley. He played in 96 at the age of 19, and was the youngest player in post season history to homer. I think I knew that, somewhere in the deep recesses of my memory. It was still shocking to see he is only 29 though. If I were Atlanta I'd hold on to him forever.
  6. It doesn't work like that, though. If you allocate so much towards one area, you're taking away some from another. If you can tell me that Marquis' salary could not have been invested into another of need, then I think that has validity. But, it becomes a question does the probable production difference beween Marquis and whomever outweigh the potential improvement of another area that could've been gained thru monetary spending that can't be accomplished b/c of Marquis' salary. The Cubs have to plan for areas that will hopefully be taken over by young, cheap, potentially higher ceiling prospects compared to established veterans that might bring some improvement but nothing that will like sway the outcome of a season. I don't believe that having Marquis over Guzman, Marshall, or whomever will factor much into the Cubs getting or not getting into the players. At the same token, the freed salary might not matter depending on it used. Or whether the Cubs have thrown all notions of having a budget to the wind, which it is starting to look like they have.
  7. Umm yeah, getting beat up here.
  8. It's truly amazing that Andrew Jones is still only 29. Amazing. Amazing. Been around it seems forever. I'd love to have him on the ballclub. Great player.
  9. Yeah, while I usually don't root for the Cowboys, given the Bears tie-breaker situation I would like to see a Saints loss here.
  10. I don't think there's any way Paxson would take a guy like Iverson on this team. He's so far away from what the Bulls are about. Square peg in a round hole. Wouldn't work. Plus he wouldn't help our inside scoring game or lack of team height, which are the deficiencies we are dealing with. It's probably the worst fit imaginable.
  11. All 3 are obviously serious trade bait. Don't mind what anyone says about "untouchables."
  12. Jacque turned out to be a bargain.
  13. His season last year was atypically bad actually. Not sure where he will end up this year. But I'm pretty sure of two things: 1) He'll be better than a 6.02 ERA and a dismal 73 ERA+, and 2) $20m/yr is insanely high for him. Agreed! LOL, whoops my bad. 3/20 is high
  14. He'd be good. But two things: 1) you don't give a guy who pitched poorly last year a ton of dollars because your own people think they can "repair" him, and 2) He's not likely to get down to his 2004 numbers any more than he's likely to repeat 2006. He'll be somewhere in between in all likelihood.
  15. His season last year was atypically bad actually. Not sure where he will end up this year. But I'm pretty sure of two things: 1) He'll be better than a 6.02 ERA and a dismal 73 ERA+, and 2) $20m/yr is insanely high for him.
  16. My guess is we aren't done trading, and if no pitchers are dealt Miller gets cut loose in your scenario.
  17. 3/28 for Marquis - the rest is mostly teeth gnashing. Not 3/20 as reported this morning? According to ChicagoSports.com, it's now 3/28. Which I think we all agree is a bad thing.
  18. Then we'd really be screwed. We're screwed even when we spend the money - what's the difference. At least with a cap we (probably) wouldn't see escalating ticket prices. LOL. Well I suppose that's right.
  19. Then we'd really be screwed.
  20. In 2 years, the Cubs could still make a trade. I very much doubt that contracts are going to go down, so even if they stay the same and Lilly is seen as a value at $10/per he could be moved. It's not the end of the world, that's for sure. I don't agree with the Marquis signing, but it's not going to handcuff the Cubs in 2 years. I think a lot of people believe the current pitching market will deflate, leaving the Cubs with overpriced pitchers who can't be moved (without eating some of the contract) And it just might.
  21. even the site admin It may not be as bad as a #1 and 4 #5's but it is pretty close We have a: #1 - Z - Can we even re-sign him now? no #2 a # 3 Ted Lilly a #4 Rich Hill 2 ?'s - Miller and Prior and a guy pretty close to useless Marquis Prior's coming back to be the #2. Believe it, and it will be so :) Z Prior (a notch below 2003 levels) Hill Lilly Marquis That's not a bad rotation. Not too bad at all.
  22. I don't disagree with most of what you said. The only thing though-----this year $9m/yr is pretty much the market for a middle-of-the-road pitcher.
  23. LOL. Are you taking a list of posters who don't like the Marquis signing, then(should Marquis actually pitch decent in 2007) call them out in every thread like this: "OMG Dude, you send Marquis would suck in Dec, but now he is good man! Dude you have to eat some major crow man! just eat the crow " Yep! And me too! I'm doing the same for Soriano, Hill, Derosa, Izturis, Lilly, and many other players posters are tossing aside as garbage. LOL, it's silly to do this but for some reason I laughed at this post.
  24. Not that I'm taking credit or anything, but this is the exact contract I speculated at a few days back :) OK, yeah I'm taking credit for it even though it was just a blind guess. This pitching market is insane. Wait until you see what Suppan gets.
