  1. http://blogs.suntimes.com/bears/2009/05/strong-side_competition_pisa_t.html Seems to me that the Bears are more then interested in bringing in Pisa in. Kind of small, but he does fit Lovie's system very well, and he knows Lovie's system. So it wouldn't surprise me if the Bears eventually sign him. It'd probably be a good move for the Bears. He'd be better than Roach or Hillenmeyer and being short doesn't matter that much in the Cover 2 (look at the Colts). He's definitely got the speed to be an asset. Which is why it wouldn't surprise me if the Bears signs him. Exactly.

  3. How many 19 year old position prospects, playing in class A for the Cubs, have put up the type of numbers Vitters is putting up? I'm more concerned with bettering our chances of winning the World Series this year than having a good third baseman 2-3 years from now. I realize it's a risk, but to me it's a smart risk. It's not like we're getting Ernie Broglio in return. That's the debate I'm stuck in right now. Do I want the potential franchise third baseman for the next 10 or so years or the stud starting pitcher who - paired with Z, Lilly and Harden - gives us an insanely good starting playoff rotation. It's tough, to say the least. If I knew I had the Aramis of old for a couple more years or so, it helps the decision, but with the questions surrounding Aramis things have gotten tougher.
  4. Not a reliever, but Ray Durham. I still don't get how he's unsigned. That's not to disagree with anything you said, though. Yeah, he was the glaring exception I was thinking of, but pretty much the only one. His idea of signing relivers as if there are good options waiting out there unsigned and that that's a wise way to spend salary was mostly what I took issue with. Yeah, you could make an argument for Grudz being valuable, but his age probably hurts that too much. I can't think of any relievers available to be signed. I'd be all for trading for a good one, but that uses up valuable resources we don't have much of.
  5. You didn't. I just wasn't sure what direction that was going in. :D
  6. True, and I'm not trying to be critical of Hill and Pie here. Just mentioning them as guys that (so far) didn't reach expectations, but that Hendry did not trade beforehand.
  7. Hendry has actually generally been pretty good at identifying which prospects will bust and which won't. Offhand, the only recent "can't miss" prospects I recall us hanging onto and them busting were Rich Hill and Pie. Cedeno did as well, but he wasn't nearly as highly regarded as the former two. Hendry has dealt guys like Justin Jones, Bobby Hill, Matt Bruback and others who haven't panned out.
  8. Yeah that's kind of my point. Maybe have a leadoff man in the post season who is a touch more consistent. I'd rather take the "hope" out of it and replace that with "likely". But we Cubs fans sure like our hope, don't we? Who can we get that will be better than Soriano in the leadoff spot? Who is out there and do we have the resources to bring that player in? ...and that brings us back to why Hendry isn't a very good GM. Dempster's peripherals (k/9, BB/9, etc) are still in line with what he did last year. He's gotten some bad breaks, but he should still be a valuable pitcher this season and, hopefully, beyond. Hendry made some poor moves this past offseason, but re-signing Dempster was far from the top.

  10. On the contrary, the only thing Fontenot has been doing effectively of late is looking at a lot of pitches...... 05/04 - 05/17 AB R H 2b 3b HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS BABIP P/PA IsoD RBI% Fontenot 29 0 1 1 0 0 3 5 10 0.034 0.171 0.069 0.240 0.053 4.89 0.137 0.130 Wow, didn't realize he'd been that bad since May started. I meant over the entirety of the year, though. Yeah, but even his season totals are starting to look pretty weak........ 04/06 - 05/17 AB R H 2b 3b HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS BABIP P/PA IsoD RBI% Fontenot 108 12 22 4 0 5 17 16 25 0.204 0.307 0.380 0.687 0.218 4.34 0.103 0.167 Yeah, I'm hoping he moves more toward last year, but I'm getting kind of worried.

  12. Ok, sorry. Somehow the ability to double switch slipped my mind. I'd have still let Fontenot and Scales hit and brought in Hoff in the 9 spot in the ninth. i might have done that in a one run game, but needing some power down 3 and bringing the game tying run to the plate, i'd much prefer a guy who has an OPS over .900 and 4 homers in 72 ABs to a guy who hasn't been hitting for beans this month. I can see that. If there's anything Fontenot can do this season, though, it's hit for power.

  14. That's if Hoff reaches safely. If not, then he pinch hits and then we burn Miles to replace him in the field. I'm not necessarily against it, but I don't think it was an awful non-move either. What? I'm not sure what's not clear about what I said. Can you elaborate where you're confused? Basically my point is that if Hoff pinch hits for either Fontenot or Scales in the 8th inning and records an out and the rest of the inning continues the way it did, then either Font or Scales will be out of the game and either Hoff will have to play 2B or 3B or Lou would have to pull Hoff and place in Miles to play in the 9th. Am I completely missing something?

  16. I liked Kornheiser well enough for the role he served. Gruden, however, was very good on NFL Network during the draft and I think he'll be good for MNF. I hated that Kornheiser could not get past the scripted topic du jour and he would just hammer it all game long. And there would always be the obvious "okay Tony, here's your 5 minutes, now go with it" times, that would routinely be interrupted by the actual game. I don't think the sarcastic non football character works in the information age. I like Jaws, but he didn't work well with Tony. Maybe that will be better with Gruden, who was genuinely entertaining during the draft. I understand your complaints about Kornheiser - and agree with most of them. I think Gruden will be a better fit overall.
  17. The original complaint was that Hoffpauir didn't PH in the 8th with runners on. Fontenot and Scales made the last two outs of that inning with runners on first and 2nd. I agree about not using Hoffpauir anywhere in the top of the order in the 9th. That's why the 8th made sense. My memory may be fuzzy on this, but if Hoff pinch hits for Fontenot (3B) or Scales (2B) in the 8th, then who plays the field the next inning?

  19. I really like the sound of that. How do you say "Nasty Boys" in Spanish? muchachos repugnantes :D
  20. I understand the reasoning behind it, but like you said they'll find more creative ways to return kicks - and they'll likely be just as dangerous.
  21. he settled in pretty well after that - he only threw 7 balls in 24 pitches, but 2 of them hit batters and another was a wild pitch. it was a really weird outing, for sure. I was pretty impressed with how he had an awful first inning, but then came back and shut them down in the second inning. I'm liking Ascanio.
  22. Yeah, that was talked about either earlier in this thread or in a different one. I'm not crazy about it, but they've made worse changes.
  23. That is a shame, what did they change in the pension plan for this to occur? A cap on how long someone can be employed and still receive a pension? Hopefully for the Colts they will be allowed to work in a consultancy fashion. Here's how Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post explained it:
  24. The Colts' offensive coordinator Tom Moore and offensive line coach Howard Mudd have officially retired.
