  1. I'm not at all familiar with this. Why wouldn't the Redskins just sign the guy to a free agent contract and keep the draft pick? He wasn't a free agent prior to the draft and if they waited until after it, there would be quite a bit of competition to sign him. Also, there were something like 5 teams that offered up a fourth round pick for him - so if the Redskins waited, he would have gone elsewhere. There were about three or four other players (including Texas Tech DE McKinner Dixon) who were available in the supplemental draft as well. No teams offered a pick for them, though, so they are now free agents.
  2. The old "He was good except when he wasn't" argument. 8.2 IP, 6 BB, 1 HR, 3 K just means that he had a lot of balls hit at fielders to keep his ERA that low. It was a BABIP fluke. So he can't just be good for a stretch, he has to be 100% terrible with fluky flashes of decency? Nevermind the fact that his ERA+ over his last 5 full seasons was 198, he must be 100% trash now? There's no way that his good month was due to his ability as a pitcher? With three strikeouts and six walks, the good ERA for a cherrypicked stretch was not because of his good pitching. It was a fluke. His ERA+ for the last five full seasons was when he was a completely different pitcher: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=168&position=P#pitchtype He's lost 2.5-3 mph off his fastball and is forced to rely on his slider way too much now. He's a broken, bad pitcher at this point in his career, and I highly suspect the Cubs will waste some innings and at least one or two games in 2009 relearning that lesson. You don't think there's a chance he can continue to be effective against lefties?
  3. The supplemental draft was held yesterday and the lone pick was Kentucky DE Jeremy Jarmon going to the Redskins for a third round pick. For those who aren't familiar with the supplemental draft, teams offer up a pick in a round and, if they have the highest offer, they get the player. However, they lose that pick from the upcoming year's (2010 in this case) draft.
  4. My thinking is, assuming he reaches the majors and is effective, he replaces Marshall as the loogy in the pen (Shark or Stevens heads back to the minors - is Stevens even up?). Marshall then moves to the rotation, likely as an injury replacement for either Dempster or Harden. If no spot is open in the rotation, then Marshall remains in the pen in a to be determined role.
  5. On the bright side of Ryan's numbers are his stats vs lefties this year: .250/.378/.389/.767 7 walks in 45 PAs while allowing just 9 hits He's walked too many, obviously, but he's not getting hit by lefties much at all.
  6. He looked good. His stuff was sharp, accurate and his velocity was up. And the Nationals have a pretty good offense. They're 8th in the NL in runs per game, 2nd in OBP, 6th in slugging and 5th in OPS.
  7. Bradley has a .855 OPS since May 25. When was the last time he homered. I think were 0-6 in games that he has homered in though. His last homer was in the 4th of July 11-2 loss to the Brewers. The Cubs are 1-5 when Bradley homers.
  8. willingham flies out to right, dunn holds. two down, christian guzman up.
  9. dunn walks. runner on first, one out. josh willingham up.
  10. Yeah, both times making contact have been hammered.
  11. johnson flies out to the left field warning track. one down, zimmerman up.
  12. bradley ks looking. gregg coming in to pitch. Cubs lead 6-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth.
  13. theriot flies out down the right field line. hill scores. Cubs lead 6-1 with two out.
  14. So nobody was out on that play? Gameday has nobody scoring and an out being made. nope, nobody got out on it. there's only one out in the inning and that was on a flyout to center by reed. tyler clippard is in to pitch.
  15. reed flies out to center. one down, theriot up. burnett out, not sure who's in. a righty for sure.
  16. WP on burnett. runners advance to second and third.
  17. Fox hit a squibber right in front of the plate. Burnett bobbles it and Fuld scores. Runners on first and second. Reed up, none out.
  18. Soriano walked, Fuld singled with the hit and run on and Sori moved to third. With runners on the corners, Hill singled to right to score Sori and move Fuld to third. Runners are now on the corners with Fox up and Sean Burnett pitching.
  19. I didn't get to see that, what exactly happened? Sunday night against the Cardinals with the bases loaded, Marshall was pitching but a righty came up against him with two or three lefties to follow. So Lou, not wanting to pull his only lefty, took Soriano out of the game, put Marshall in left and let Heilman pitch to the one hitter (think it was somebody pinch hitting for Schumaker). Then Marshall came back in to pitch to the final two lefties and Reed came in to play left. Actually, it was a righty due up, then Schumaker I think, but Schumaker was PH for with a righty, so Marshall only ended up facing 1 more lefty but got both hitters out anyway. You're right. I was going completely off memory and mine's not good.

  21. I don't know if Lou will ever be that comfortable. He was at the start of the season when we had Cotts. Lou wants a loogy in the pen. Cotts was that, now it's Marshall. But if Ryan can fill that role this season, Lou will have his loogy and Marshall will likely take back the role he held while Cotts was playing.
  22. This is a good move, in my opinion. Even if Ryan has nothing left, the Cubs aren't out anything. And if he can pitch well, it allows Lou to be comfortable moving Marshall back to the rotation at some point.
