  1. Yeah, earlier this week Lane made the comment that Florida has better players, but Bama has better coaches. He's enjoyed the opportunity to crack at Urban Meyer.
  2. There are actually 4 championship games today. I'm quite sure you didn't forget about the massive Houston/ECU Conference USA championship game, so it must have been one of the 3 more minor ones.
  3. I don't agree at all that Z and Fuku were bad contracts. Howry was well worth his contract for 2 of 3 years. Hawkins was quite good for us with the exception of save situations. Also, according to Fangraphs, Burnitz was worth $6 million and was paid $4.5 million.
  4. You also traded away a guy in Fox who can be useful doing things this team actually need, scoring runs, as opposed to another mediocre arm doing things this team doesn't have that much trouble with. And Miles wasn't brought here to give 170 PAs, part of the problem of having him on the roster was the complete lack of replacement when Ramirez went down. There's an opportunity cost there that is more than just what Miles did. Gray is a 28 year old who wasn't a particularly good minor leaguer and hasn't been a particularly good major leaguer. He's the quintessential dime a dozen bullpen arm. And Fox is an ok bat with awful defense. There are plenty of those around as well. Gray's minor league numbers are a 3.30 ERA, 1.184 WHIP and 273:86 K:BB ratio. How was he not a particularly good minor leaguer? Fox and Gray seem very similar, except ones a hitter and ones a pitcher. Neither are likely to be stars at any point, but both could provide some level of value to their team. Then you have two intriguing minor leaguers basically for Miles.
  5. What if the fix to the mistake is better than the mistake itself? For example, Hendry signed Miles to a bench role last year and Miles got all of 170 plate appearances. He was then traded (along with Fox) for three interesting minor leaguers. What if one or more of those minor leaguers end up helping us this year or in the future more than Miles hurt us last year? I don't know how many wins Miles cost us, but in 170 PAs, I can't imagine it's that many. So what if it ends up being that Hendry made a minor mistake (paying Miles $3.5 million), but corrected it by bringing in 1-2 young players who can help us for a number of years cheaply? Gray seems like the kind of reliever who could be quite useful this year.
  6. Yeah, a 5-7 season at Buffalo is actually an accomplishment. Gill should be very high on most teams' list. As should Golden.
  7. Right. I'd take Cust over Fox now, but with time Fox may develop into a similar player as Cust.
  8. Why not, he's a future DH in the AL. Because he doesn't hit well enough to cover up for his terrible defense? Is it that hard to understand? Your comments describe Cust perfectly too. And I think Fox is better than Cust with his .239 career average. Cust is actually probably the upside of Fox. Cust has a career .829 OPS, he's fairly valuable.
  9. Not forever, no, but some coaches are still staying a long time. Ferentz has been at Iowa for 11 years and counting. Greg Schiano has been at Rutgers forever. How long has Mack Brown been at Texas? Pete Carroll has been there for a decade. Bowden just retired, Paterno is still at PSU. College football head coach is a fantastic longterm gig. There are only a handful of places were a lack of NC will actually doom you to being fired, and there are countless places where sustained success is good enough to keep you raking in the dough. Chris Ault has been at Nevada for 25 years now.
  10. So do Urban Meyer's. Would you prefer Tuberville over him? Not saying that there aren't legitimate reasons to prefer Tubs over Fulmer... just think that one is a bit of a stretch. There are definitely reasons to prefer Tuberville over Fulmer, but discipline is not one of those. I think either will be a good hire for whoever picks them up.
  11. That's kind of what I thought. I could see him trying to bring in Randy Sanders, but I wonder if Sanders would leave Kentucky knowing he'll get the OC job once Joker Phillips makes the move to head coach. If not Sanders, I wonder if Fulmer would look at Rob Spence or Scott Loefler, two guys he apparently considered for the UT OC job when he hired Clawson? Either would be very good OCs, I think. This is very true and is why I think Fulmer would be highly interested. Not having to deal with the big dogs in a conference until the championship game is a good deal.
  12. TIFWIW... Louisville's Top 3, as of right now, is Fulmer, Charlie Strong, and Butch Jones. I think it's Strong's job to lose, and that Phil is the next coach at Kansas. Can you imagine that headline the morning after Mangino is fired and Fulmer is hired? "Jayhawks Head Football Coach 50 Pounds Lighter This Morning." What are your thoughts on the possibility of Fulmer to Kansas? I think he can thrive there, but I'm curious to hear other opinions.
  13. I'd say right now USC, Florida, Ohio State and maybe Texas and Oklahoma are better jobs. That's probably it. If one of those schools call and back up the trucks, I could see Saban leaving. Otherwise, I figure he's probably there for pretty close to the duration – unless he decides he wants another crack at the NFL.
  14. Charlie Strong should get a head coaching job. Louisville would be a good spot for him.
  15. The New Year's Day thing is kind of a draw for me. Also, though, the Outback is generally considered more prestigious than the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. It is a good point that the Chick-Fil-A will be played at night and, thus, potentially raise viewership. The drop from the Outback to the Chick-Fil-A isn't huge - nothing like if we dropped to Music City or Independence - but it just seems odd that they think Auburn will draw better than us. Maybe it shouldn't. I have wanted to see a UT/Va Tech matchup for a while now, so that'll be interesting if that's the matchup.
  16. i highly doubt that tampa bay locals would go to the outback bowl to see their former defensive coordinator sit in the booth and defensive coordinate for a college football team. For what it's worth, Monte coordinates from the field. And even if people didn't buy extra tickets because of it, I think it'd be something that would raise the interest of the locals considering how popular he was and still is.
  17. I think the Titans have a real good chance to win. The Colts have been playing with fire and this game will mean more to the Titans. I'd also feel more comfortable if Bob Sanders was healthy to "spy" on Vince Young. The Colts have been running the ball more effectively recently; though their defense has struggled a bit recently (especially the pass defense, in my opinion, though hopefully the return of a healthy Kelvin Hayden would remedy that somewhat). Chris Johnson is ridiculous. I just don't like our chances of slowing down Peyton and the passing game much at all. If Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart can throw the ball wherever they want at will, Peyton will feel like he's back at UT facing a 1-AA opponent. I agree completely with you last sentence, though.
  18. Auburn to the Outback is official. And it still doesn't make sense. Oh well, guess that means Chick-Fil-A for Tennessee. The Outback Bowl traditionally takes an SEC East team, so I'm not sure why they passed over Tennesee, but I'm pleased....I think Auburn may be able to hold their own against Wiscy if they is who they end up playing. Yeah, they usually take an East team and Tennessee has the Monte ties, which might bring in more local fans into the stadium. I don't know which of UT or Auburn travels better, but I can't imagine it's that big a difference. Oh well, congrats to your Tigers.
  19. Auburn to the Outback is official. And it still doesn't make sense. Oh well, guess that means Chick-Fil-A for Tennessee.
  20. Well, that wouldn't make much sense at all.
  21. Interesting read. Thanks.
  22. Johnson must have a big game for them to win and VY can't make mistakes. Even that might not be enough, but if Johnson is held in check and/or VY throws a couple picks, the Titans don't have a chance. Yeah, we definitely can't make mistakes. We have to score something on most of our possessions, can't turn the ball over and must keep the ball out of Peyton's hands. If we do that, we'll have a chance. It's no guarantee to win, though.
  23. That was great to see. That entire drive was Vince hooking up with the franchise's future. Britt, Jared Cook and Lavell Hawkins were the guys who made the catches on that game-winning drive. The future of this offense is very promising right now.
  24. Besides the winning streak and the playoff hunt, one of the best things about Sunday's win was that it was the first time that Vince truly won a game this year. Before that game, he had been the starting QB in wins, but had done little more than manage the game and make a few plays. In that game-winning drive, though, Vince won the game through the air. That is a very positive sign.
  25. Should be an interesting game for the Titans Sunday. The Colts are the best team - by far - that we've played since we started winning games and they have the best passing offense. Our secondary has still been shaky at best in the 5-game winning streak, so I expect Peyton to have a bit of a field day against us. Our best shot to win is to control the ball and the clock and limit the possessions the Colts have. Similar to the Indy/Miami game, we have avoid turnovers and gain positive yardage on pretty much every play. If we can burn enough clock, we'll have a chance in the fourth quarter. Note of interest - there has apparently never been a running back who has had 3 rushing TDs of 85+ yards in their career. Chris Johnson has had 3 of those this season.
