  1. Yeah, they may have changed after '03, but that was still a decade of Cubs prospects under Andy/Hendry leadership without a single position player. That being said, there's nothing wrong with shift to winning for the short-term at times, trading away some guys. The problem is if you have 10 years to build, you should have a better core already around that taking a year off shouldn't kill you. If they did the original play properly, the 00-03 teams should have been filled with multiple good young players from within the organization, and it should have been the perfect time to top it off with a trade for a guy or two at a position you couldn't fill internally. The Lynch years were separate though as was the philosophy. You can't build for the long-term by trading two of the best pitching prospects within your system for Karchner and Heredia (Heredia was young, though) and going after Tapani, Gaetti, Servais, Girardi, etc. I believe the 1st real commitment was after they saw what they potentially could have come up the pipeline for cheap w/Wood. The 98' draft was probably the foundation of positional prospects (Wood, Kelton, and I can't remember if Goldbach was a '98 draftee as well).
  2. For lack of a better term.....I think the Cubs gave up in building the farm system. I think they saw all he talent in their draft picks (Patterson, Prior, Sisco, etc) and international signings (Zambrano, Choi, Ryu, Pie) and thought they honestly had enough quality prospects and players to sustain a long future of success. Exactly, I don't care how good your current squad is, if you don't put a great deal of emphasis on the farm, it'll bite you. The Yankees are in that mode right now, they've made great strides in their system over the last couple of years and it has to do with them not winning the past few years by building a great FA club.
  3. Their philosophy shifted after '03, they went from winning for the long-term to winning in the short-term. They bumped the payroll up at the same time cancelled international scouting in various areas and did not sign any key FAs during that time to compensate for the lack of prospects coming up. Their lack of impact players from Latin America and the Pacific Rim as well as an inability to either by injury, talent, or approach of minor leaguers to progress.
  4. Bingo. Andy and Jim said the same things 10 years ago. They had it, didn't follow through with it.
  5. http://www.belleville.com/mld/belleville/news/politics/16345562.htm Bingo.
  6. Hopefully UK cost some people some money today.
  7. Uk has taken it to them in the 2nd half, I can't say that about the 1st.
  8. Uk has been able to put Clemson in a passing situation, which is always given how UK can't stop the run and Clemson can't pass.
  9. UK has to block better and hold onto the ball better. Offensively, if Clemson is expecting UK to shorten the field b/c UK can't block them, throw some short slants and maybe an occasional draw to keep setting up the deep bomb.
  10. More pook kicking, this time by UK.
  11. Sun Bowl=My fav. collegiate FB stadium.
  12. UK can be more aggressive as Clemson won't try too many FGs.
  13. Good god, does Brooks have some nuts to call the fake punt that deep. Nice bomb, btw.
  14. This game has become all turnovers and the worst review system I've ever seen.
  15. I would scrap that offensive play, catches it 10 yards behind the LOS, terrible.
  16. Hopefully that stands as an INT, hell of a play.
  17. UK has been outplayed yet lead by 1.
  18. Atchinson has been abused so far.
  19. I'm glad Clemson has no kicking game.
  20. C-A-T-S CATS CATS CATS Doesn't happen too often where I can watch UK in a bowl game.
  21. Cubs fans should have faith that Wilken will be able to improve the farm system.
  22. I'm sure he'll be scouted defensively just a little. :) From my limited reading on these kids, (after Price) Harvey intrigues me the most.
  23. Doesn't that take away Soriano's strength as a hitter over hitters like Juan Pierre? Pierre can maintain a similar avg as Soriano, he just can't drive them in from 1st. If you want to take advantage of speed, hit Lugo 7th. Lugo gets on steals 2B, BB the 8th hitter, P bunts them over for Soriano. Obviously, situation determines when to steal. I think OBP has to be a key factor with the 8th spot with someone like Soriano. I would adjust my line-up accordingly. Soriano Murton Lee Ramirez Jones Barrett Lugo Derosa.
  24. Hypothetical: If the Cubs signed Lugo, how would you construct the line-up with Soriano at the top? The reason why I add this is b/c Izturis fits the bill of a player who would be more productive with an increase in OBP rather slg and negates any possible shuffling as he's best off hitting under any line-up (unless it has a less productive hitter than Izturis). Soriano Lugo Lee Ramirez Jones Barrett Murton Derosa. I would either put Murton 2nd with Lugo 8th/Derosa 7th. Or Murton 8th and Derosa 7th. The ability to get runners on base with Soriano's XBH potential and ability to drive runners in can't be ignored simply b/c he's hitting leadoff.
  25. If you were Piniella would you put more of an emphasis on OBP for the 8 spot in the order with Soriano hitting lead-off compared to a traditional leadoff hitter?
