  1. Others like 1908 and Meph know more about Japanese baseball than me, but I would say it's between AAA and the Majors.
  2. Fwiw, those were 80 MPH changeups on the inner half. He lunges like most japanese hitters but he keeps his hands back well, clears his hips, and can turn on the ball.
  3. Given the hype, I hope he is able to adjust quicker rather than later. I think he'll be a good addition, it'll prob. take him some time to get going.
  4. They got their guy, he's an ideal fit for what they're looking for. http://youtube.com/watch?v=qkw8b3RhKrY He'll see a better strike zone than that.
  5. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/majors/features/265324.html =D>
  6. I have no idea what this sentence means. I agree with the guy who works with/for the Stros as far as lacking baseball ability to an extent. Nothing stands out as far as his instinct & he's not Theriot as far as fundamentals. But, he's strong and knows how to center and drive the ball and with those qualities combined with his versatility to play several positions, he's a quality guy to have. Until they upgrade, he's their best 2B option.
  7. To get to the majors, you have to be somewhat athletic. I don't know the context of what he means by athletic. Does he mean athletic as far as hand eye coord., balance, etc. at the plate (which is baseball ability)? Or does he mean his ability to run, throw, etc? In the context of every day life, he's def. more athletic and gifted than an avg. person. As far as a major league player, his physical abilities (speed, arm strength, agility) are not superior than most especially middle infielders.
  8. He has baseball abilities, just not real toolsy (not real fast, avg. arm, ok hands) I tend to brush hitting mechanics to the side, if he can center the ball and drive it, which Derosa does well. I don't mind them looking @ Roberts (depending on cost) as it gives the Cubs needed depth espec. as a bat off the bench and a good player who can play mult. positions. This team will suffer injuries next year and he will have value in that role.
  9. Roberts would push him, although the improvements would be based more on having the higher OBP at the top ahead of the better hitters moreso than Roberts replacing Derosa's bat in the lineup. Plus, the Cubs have to get him, which I typically believe when I see.
  10. Roberts is a much better athlete than Derosa (minus strength).
  11. yeah you told us it wouldn't happen last year, solid forecast there It's a fair statement to expect some regression from someone with a BABIP above .340. As far as whether or not he should stick as a starter, there's no doubt, even if he regresses to league avg. (around .260 EqA for 2B), he'll be miles ahead of Cedeno, Theriot, and Fontenot.
  12. Prob. the equal to good short-season baseball or bad Low-A.
  13. I hope they go undefeated just to stick up those 72' Dolphins ____
  14. Soriano has good but not great arm strength, his ability to throw like a middle infielder from the OF helps him more than anything. They had Jones in RF, who had been a RF'er in recent memory and the Cubs had no CF'er. It was just an odd and ineffective OF group last year. Getting a legit CF'er and a RF'er instead of bunches of stiff & weak armed OF'ers would help them in that regard.
  15. I agree with the needed improvements, but Fukudome and Murton as the CF and RF would be horrible for this team defensively while fine offensively. Everything I've read on Fukudome is that he would be a RF'er playing CF and Murton would be a LF'er playing RF. Soriano projects as more of a RF'er than Murton, which would make more sense as far as switch, but I haven't heard where the Cubs would consider shifting Soriano to RF. They didn't last year despite Soriano having similar range before the leg injury and stronger arm than Jones. If they get Fukudome, they'd need to upgrade SS or CF even if they did get Roberts.
  16. I think the Cubs would be estatic to get the same pitching they had last year. Of course, they have to get at least 1 more hitter (two would be better) and expect Soto to outproduce the revolving door of catchers last year could generate both offensively and defensively, which was well below par. The Cubs have quite a bit of distance to get that offense where it needs to be, Fukudome isn't the only piece, IMO.
  17. No, but it should be noted you're going back 3-4 years to make your stance.
  18. As far as whether or not you want Hendry as the GM is to ask yourself, "is there anyone out there who is available and you'd feel confident would do a better job than Hendry?" It doesn't get any easier than that. You might like Hendry regardless of potential candidates, or realize that even though I'm not 100% on board with what he is doing he's better than what is out there, or person X would likely do a better so the Cubs would be better off firing Hendry and going with person X.
  19. I disagree with last year's team being more talented than the '03 team. The '07 version of Z, Hill, and Lilly would've competed with Clement as the 4th best starter of the '03 team. That team had a better CF'er, RF'er, similar production in LF, 2B, SS, and C while the '07 team was stronger at 1B and 3B. Bullpens were prob. close due to Borowski and Farnsworth having strong year compared to strong years from Mamrol and Howry and the 2nd half for Eyre. The 07' team wasn't nearly as strong on the mound as the '03 team.
  20. That's how alot of Japanese hitters look when they swing, it's similar to Iwamura and Ichiro. Hideki stays back more, but he's more of a rotational hitter than the others. The highlights I seen of Fukudome is that he stays closed well against LH'ers throwing breaking balls, has real good hip rotation, load, and balance. I just want to see how well he stays back on the outside pitches.
  21. Are there any complete games of Fukudome avail. anywhere? I'd like to see him in something other than highlights.
  22. While that was a def. bomb, look at that pitch, inside FB tailing out over the plate when he's ahead in the count. It doesn't tell you much about his raw power. Now, if he's behind in the count and that was a tailing change-up out over the outer 3rd.
