  1. I don't think this will be a real busy offseason. I think the Cubs will sign one starter who draws no interest from a contender. They just flipped a guy like that for a rated (BA top 100) prospect. I doubt Soriano is traded before July. I doubt DeJesus is traded before July. Marginal players have more value in July then they do in January. (see above) I believe they will attempt to get a pitching prospect for the junk position prospects they have but will fail. Soriano, Jackson, DeJesus, Castro, Rizzo and Castillo will start on opening day.
  2. My prediction for 2013 opening day lineup. RF DeJesus SS Castro 1B Rizzo LF Soriano 3B Stewart C Castillo CF Jackson 2B Barney P Garza Soriano: This year his OPS by month was 500, 950, 900, 800. If next year it's 800, 850, 825 he can be traded in July. It will cost 10-12 mil but if he's packaged with say Clevenger or Wood the return will be better than trading Sori alone. Stewart: If the broken bone in his hand was an issue, the Cubs would be stupid not to guarantee a couple mil to bring him back. 3B is a black hole and competition is a good thing. Castillo: In my opinion, he makes Clevenger a nice piece to put in a deal. Garza: If the Cubs believe he still has a career they need to bring him back.
  3. Hendry ran the team into the ground in a desperate attempt to keep his job.
  4. Draft tons of pitching is exactly what the Detroit Tigers did to go from horrible to contender in a small market. They signed Kenny Rogers after injury, Mags after injury and Ivan when no one wanted him.
  5. Ah, if the White Sox actually had fans someone would be in the cell. With the economy the way it is Cardinal fans can't afford to drive to Chicago to simulate a White Sox fan base.
  6. I caught a few of Jackson's at bats today and it appeared the hand movement and leg kick wasn't an issue. That's the good. The bad? No coaching until now?
  7. In perspective, I'd take him over Z every day.
  8. It makes sense to me, bring up a Jackson to play center and send Campana down to play center until September or the end of Iowa's season.
  9. If it's unacceptable to call him Rizzo, then I'll call him The Rake. Sorry if it's taken, I didn't want to read 9 pages.
  10. 101 pages dedicated to a guy pulled out of the dumpster. He only has 10/5 because we pulled him out of the dumpster. I don't want anything for him. I want his career over now! No more contracts for his selfish, money grubbing pig.
  11. I really can't see why a team would want him this year or even in the off season. Unless he's just warming up.
  12. Switching to the light bat looks like winner. He's not worth the cash but he's probably been the best offensive player since he accepted coaching. I'm thinking we won't have to eat the contract.
  13. While his low OBP/walk rate and possible move to third in the future diminish his value I can't see a team offering what it should take to make a deal.
  14. lol, since Mark Grace. Starlin [expletive] careers like Mark Grace's in prison. Try Ernie Banks. You were either drunk when you posted this or you lack communication skills. I'm guessing you're a Sox fan.
  15. I knew I'd take heat on Castro, whom I called the best position player the Cubs have produced since Mark Grace. It's just, to me, he's not Vladamir Guerrero and needs walks to boost his OPS. He's my favorite player. See you all in 30 games.
  16. I was going to wait till 40 ... Thirty games into the season, what three things are disappointing, what three things are thrilling and what thing are you watching. Disappointing: Castro is allergic to walks. Soto is off to a slow start. And a tie between Volstad (who can't let a base runner not score) and Marmol (who can't let a batter not reach base). Thrilling: Brian LaHair. The top of the rotation; Dempster, Garza and The Shark. And Dolis looks like a closer (making Marmol a 17 mil mistake). Watching: Can Campana reach base enough so his speed and defense is an asset? (subject title a tribute to Zeps Ten Years Gone)
  17. If there is a contender in need that Dempster would be willing to go to it would be a nice. It would be a team in need of a #2 or #3 starter that would be willing to overpay (next season) if he produces. Yanks, BoSox and Dodgers are the first to mind. The Angels, Rangers and Marlins are also possible destinations. But really, this is a conversation better suited for six weeks from now.
  18. With Soto day to day it's a moot point. Castillo gets a good taste of the majors while Soto gets a needed rest then, presumably, Castillo gets a little rest before returning to Iowa.
  19. I like the deal. We flipped Boston the Byrd! We added a couple of players that might be useful, trade chips or worthless but holding Byrd gets us nothing.
  20. We should have traded Soto instead of trading for Garza. At this moment Soto has no value.
  21. I gotta go with Castro shocking on the upside. A .310/.350/.440 line is a slight improvement on what he's done in diapers. I'm looking for something north of an .850 ops. I'll go for a .321/.374/.487/.861 line for a kid that turns 22 on May 24. His real breakout season is next year. For 2013 I'll go for a .317/.391/.519/.910 line. Darwin Barney? He'll be a utility infielder and we'll love him for his glove and low, low cost. Tony Campana? Eventually, the outfield logjam will clear up and we'll love him for his speed, glove and cost as the 25th guy on the roster. Ian Stewart will be a bust but Castro will move to third in 2014 so who cares.
  22. I'm just juiced to see what the kid can do now that he's out of diapers. I'm thinking I'm going to be like :yahoo:
  23. Downsides: injuries to the rotation and Castro, Soto repeating 2009/2011 levels of performance, less power on this year's team, LaHair being a 4A player and Rizzo regressing. I could easily see this team being worse than last year. Really, Castro might not be able to do what he has done? I look at Castro and I see Grace, Carter, Madlock, Santo, Williams and Banks.
  24. I just watched a video of Sveum answering some questions and one of the first things he said really made me cringe. Someone asked who the leadoff hitter was...he responded that he couldn't really say yet, although DeJesus was probably the leading candidate...sweet....then he dropped Barney's name. UGH. In what conceivable way is it a good idea to give our worst everyday hitter the most PAs on the team? For [expletive]'s sake. The other thing that bothered me about that answer was that he said he'd also take spring training performance into consideration. This came after both Epstein and Hoyer pretty firmly stated that spring training means nothing to them. I'm sure it's something they talked about during the interview, but it was one of the few disconnects I saw between management and Sveum. That and Sveum saying Campana's speed could be worth 5 wins this year. I think ST performance means something to a manager. Who's leaving AZ in the rotation? Sveum's choices will be, largely, performance based. While, unless some performs way outside of expectations, I can't see why Hoyer would need to take some action based on ST performances. I don't see the conflict.
