  1. I'd be happy if Murton gets 4 starts per week for the next few weeks. Burnitz seems to wear down with prolonged use so I wouldn't have him playing seven consecutive days. Holly ends up with more at bats but Murton would get more starts in left. Burnitz stays rested, Holly stays sharp and I get a good look at Murton. If Murton is succeeding three weeks from now I add another start.
  2. Smith is likely headed to the hall so he really isn't an option. If the voting trend continues, Sutter might even make it. In that case, I'll try Phil Regan. Yes, I leave Dempster in the role he has filled successfully.
  3. The key is the first two series. If we cant's go 6-2 then I doubt we make any big moves (unless there is future value).
  4. I think the reason nobody has included Ernie is because one of the criteria was that you couldn't name HOFers. Ah, that's right. Well my second choice, late 60's to early 70's Billy Williams doesn't work either. How about Randy Huntley behind the plate? The dude was injury prone but when healthy, one of the best defensive catchers in the game and not too shabby with the stick. Walton and Dernier have no body of work to provide any assurances so I don't go there. Sosa is a future HOFer. Palmerio doesn't qualify (imo) and if a future HOFer. I gotta go with Randy Huntley and bench Barrett. I can live with Hairston, Walker, Lee, Ramirez, Burnitz, Murton, Huntley, Cedeno. With Moreland, Hollandsworth, Perez and Barrett on my bench and Smith or Sutter in the setup role.
  5. I seem to be older so I'll go older. I want a pretty good shortstop so I'm going with mid to late 50's Ernie Banks. I want a utility type player who can play 3B, LF, RF, 1B and who can C if necessary. This guy would complement Hollandsworth perfectly. Give me Keith Moreland. Pitcher? Dempster has settled in at closer so I'd take either of these guys and use them in the 8th; Bruce Sutter or Lee Smith.
  6. I would have agreed with you both times (and you can probably find my posts but who cares.) Sammy had to go.
  7. Well that was a little out of left field? #-o It was just a pathetic dig at me based on the title of the thread. Because I indicated Bruce touched on NSBB themes, he is assuming that I was saying Bruce got his ideas from NSBB for his article, which wasn't the implication. Sports writers surf boards like this from time to time to see what the fanatics are talking about and have for years. It's the cyber version of sitting in a bar and listening to drunk guys arguing. The one advantage of the cyber age is that writer could be sitting in his hotel room in Miami.
  8. I get what you're saying. You want to deal volume of AAAA/AAA/AA players for Adam Dunn. I'd ship 40 man/40 man this winter pitching to the pitching staved Reds for Dunn. No problem. I'd still look to ship guys like Holly and Rusch to free up playing time for kids and FIRE Dusty if he didn't play them.
  9. I posted a couple days ago that I thought we would lose out to the break. Call me a jinx or a sage, eh. Patterson had a decent start to the season as the leadoff hitter. Not great but it was ok. Walker goes down, in comes Hairston and he bumps Corey to the #2 spot. Nomar goes down and Corey slides back to #3. I read a comment elsewhere that Dusty give him every opportunity and batted him everywhere. I don't trade Patterson. I let a real manager put him in one spot in the lineup and freaking leave him there! The way Dusty jerked the kid around from April forward is reason enough to send him packing! Burnitz: A tough trade because you need a team with an open OF or DH spot who needs a 6 hitter from the left side. Baltimore could use a right fielder ;) Hollandsworth: A quality off the bench guy who can help a team, just need a team that needs a LH bat off the bench and he's cheaper. Rusch: A back of the rotation guy who can slide into the pen once you get to the playoffs. Dempster: A team needing a closer or a setup could find lighting in a bottle on the cheap, seriously. Walker: As much as I like the guy and view him as the team leader, those a qualities that can be sold and Fontenot could be brought up. Maddux: We'd have to eat some salary but I'm sure he'd go to selected contenders. Perez and Macias: I have no problem with these guys, assuming we are talking about a utility infielder and the 25th man. Baker: FIRED!!!
  10. I don't necessarily disagree for part of it, I just suspect we lose the next 5 and are done. Burnitz, I believe, has a one year gig. Holly gives a team a LH bench bat who can play LF, RF & 1B. Rusch is a 5th starter who can go the pen in the playoffs without multiyear baggage. Dempster has the most value. Also, if we trade Burnitz for another Dubois we dump some salary and get choice (Dubois or another Dubois) next year. That would really suck and wouldn't be worth pursuing.
  11. We trade players who are playing well enough to help another team. I think that means Burnitz, Rusch and Hollandsworth, maybe Dempster too but I'd really need something for a guy who looks like a legit closer. LF Hairston Jr 2B Walker 1B Lee 3B Ramirez RF Dubois CF Patterson C Barrett SS Cedeno Blanco Macias Perez Grieve Kelton Wood* Prior Zambrano Maddux* Williams Wuertz Ohman Novoa Remlinger Wellemeyer Mitre Leicester (*I'm sure Maddux would have no problem landing in SD or ATL. *If Wood is willing to go to Texas or elsewhere, that's fine too.) By moving Burnitz and bringing up Grieve you open a spot in AAA for Murton. Nolasco has been consistantly good pitching in AA and Pinto is about ready for a 2nd look at AAA as well. If we don't pull out of this tail spin (2 more vs ATL then 3 vs FLA) then we sell, play kids and promote so we can evaluate.
  12. I don't get worked up over games. I really don't. Baseball is only a distraction for me. Still, with Torres on the ropes, you leave the RH hitter in with the LH bat following. Come on, Crusty the Baker didn't use Holly because McClendon would have countered with a lefty. Pulling JD for Macias allowed McClendon to make the change one bat earlier. He let Torres off the hook and made McClendon's job easier. -- A new BANDWGN? Fire Dusty, promote Speier!
  13. Set aside Macias hitting for Dubois for a second. We got a man on second with one out. Torres is being hit hard. He won't face Burnitz, he probably will face Dubois ... he might give him an intential pass but he will stay in the game because we have R-L-R situation and none of them are slugs. So? Crusty the Baker hands McClendon a gift.
  14. There is a way to get good seats at face value if your schedule is flexible.
