  1. Ha-ha! With the right! Now with the left! Take that you switch-hitter. Muahahaha!
  2. I think Len is absolutely great. I loved Stone, and I miss him in the booth, but Brenly isn't too bad.
  3. Hill was a bust. Grudz was almost certainly the better choice, patricularly in hindsight. ;) I disagree on Dubois. Hollandworth was terrible, and Dubois had/has more upside. As for Choi, I'm going to dig up Tim's comprehensive study on Choi -- who should have been platooned with Karros. the cubs did the right thing by bringing in randall simon. Really? He of the .318 OBP and .485 SLG with the Cubs in '03 (.282 BA)? Through June 7th when Choi was injured, he had a .389 OBP and a .496 SLB (.244 BA). He never got a chance to re-establish himself after he returned from the concussion -- as Tim's post (which I need to find) showed pretty conclusively. Randall Simon was a free swinging machine who did have a knack of hitting just about anything thrown at the plate. Which is why his OBP has always been very close to his BA -- and which is also why he's now out of baseball. Acquiring Simon was only the right thing to do because Baker wouldn't give Choi a fair opportunity to succeed after the injury. This is an old argument.
  4. He hit .253 last year with the Dodgers, so I think its reasonable to assume he would be capable of that again. Besides, his OBP is his key number. Why are we talking about playing Choi every day? When D. Lee comes back, he will be playing every day. What we would need would be someone who can play first base sometimes, and possibly play other positions as well. Or come off the bench to pinch hit, etc,...I would much rather have Cuddyer for the first reason (he can play OF as well as 1b), or would prefer Clark backing up 1b for the second reason. (pinch hitting.) Besides, we've already tried Choi, and wasn't the answer. We can stash Choi in the minors when Lee comes back. Additionally, he adds left-handed power to the bench and gets on base at a good clip.

  6. C'mon folks, who wants to take up Dusty's defense with respect to Cedeno and Perez? I went through all the trouble of doing the research and there isn't a single post in response? If not, thou shalt know me as Threadkiller.
  7. I don't like Dusty very much, but I don't let my likes and dislikes affect my judgement when it comes to analyzing the numbers. So, let's take a look at Cedeno's 2005, shall we? Cedeno was called up from the DJaxx on 4/21/05 after Garciaparra hurt his groin. The Cubs signed Enrique Wilson on 5/17/05 and optioned Ronny to Iowa. During this period, he received 16 plate appearances in 22 games; Neifi had 89 plate appearances during this 22 game span. After watching Enrique Wilson flounder, the Cubs brought Ronny back a second time on 6/28/2005 and at the same time outrighted the horrible Enrique Wilson to AAA. Ronny remained with the club for 39 games until 8/9/05 when he was sent down to make room for Corey Patterson. During this span, Ronny had 40 plate appearances to Neifi's 135. Finally, Ronny returned to the Cubs on 8/26/05 with the injury to Ramirez. Ronny was active from the 26th until September 10th, when he broke a bone in his hand. While Nomar played third, Ronny finally had something of a chance, receiving 29 plates appearances in 15 games. Neifi, meanwhile, had 47 plate appearances. So, by the numbers, Ronny was with the 2005 Cubs -- in an active, playing role -- for 76 games. During this time frame, Neifi appeared 271 times at the plate to Ronny's 85 plate appearances. 271 to 85.
  8. Some of the youth might be "clown shoes" as you label them, but if they will outproduce the crusty "old hobnail" veteran, they should play. A great example is Perez over Cedeno last season. Cedeno rotted on the bench while Perez "saved" us. Estes over Cruz. Harris over anyone. Hollandsworth over Dubois. If a rookie gives at least the performance the veteran would offer, but has the potential for upside, you go with the young player who might perform better.
  9. Wood and Prior were two of the most abused pitchers in 2003, and its likely their arms have suffered accordingly. I'm beginning to worry that Zambrano is next.
  10. You really think there's a good chance? There's teams that are in need of pitching. Rusch's deal is still affordable. Some GM's would look at his 2004-2005 performance and value it more than what he's done this year. I could see Texas as one team that might grab him. The thought of Glendon calling Arlington his home makes me giggle. Yeah...if he doesn't work out as a pitcher, there's quite a few [expletive] bars in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex he could find work at. Cute.
  11. Watch the language folks.
  12. Haha! Arizona took Pope. Terrible.
  13. Youboty's off the board. Two more picks.
  14. Keep it civil and refrain from potshots, folks.
  15. He's on the 60 day DL in any event.
  16. I tend to start with the letter 'A.' As in abso-frickin'-lutely NOT HAPPENING.
  17. I'll take 2/3. Tommorrow's gonna be tough. Me too. The Cubs need to make D-Train work. They need to see a lot of pitches and make Dontrelle rack 'em up early. I don't mind if that means they strike out a bunch early -- just make Dontrelle throw a ton of pitches. The faster the Cubs can get into the bullpen, the better chance we have to win.
  18. Please drop the Sanchez/Patterson discussion in this thread. If you want a discussion, that's fine, but carry it to another, more topical, thread.
  19. It was nice to see Pierre's speed come into play there. He did make that a very tough play for Cabrera.
  20. Why would I dislike it? It's not as if he'll be able to hit me.
  21. patterson's walk off homeruns that he's had don't count anymore? how's alex sanchez doing btw? C'mon, let's not call out particular posters and pick on them -- dredging up the Sanchez stuff is calculated to do just that. It has no bearing on this conversation.
  22. I just don't get it. The Cubs were frustrated by Corey's inability to be a more selective hitter, so naturally they go out and get a more EXPENSIVE, OLDER version of Corey. I just don't get it. I would prefer Burnitz to Jones. Jim Hendry = No Offseason Plan. Again. Funny. It seems like he at least put together one of the best bullpens in baseball, if nothing else. and a good bullpen is what % of a complete team? 28% with 7 pitchers in the 'pen and 24% with 6.
  23. I kind of thought so, too. I was wondering why the heck Neifi didn't veer off -- it looked to me like it should have Jones's ball. I was having bad visions of two more Cubs on the DL for a moment.
  24. Just for fun I think I'll delete y'all's posts... :P
