  1. I've suggested in multiple threads that the Cubs pursue Jones + Eyre for Lieber and prospects.
  2. I'd be willing to bet LA is hot after Vernon Wells, with Brad Penny at the center of the deal. You can never have too many OFs!
  3. The difference is, you might be leading the game 1-0.
  4. I like Baldelli. I'd rather have Carl Crawford and move him to CF, but it would take more than the Cubs have to get him.
  5. Jones + Eyre for Lieber and prospects (at least one B). I think Lieber could be very servicable for the Cubs for one year.
  6. Patterson has too many health concerns. When healthy, he can be very good, and is a strikeout machine. Sounds like a Cubs pitcher already. Anyway, I doubt Hendry would pursue him, as his intent right now seems to be durability in the starting staff. Really? Then why did he sign Lilly and not Suppan? Over the last 4 years, Suppan averaged 31.5 starts per year and Lilly averaged 30 starts per year. Not a real big difference.
  7. In Jayson Stark's article about the Garcia to Philly trade, he mentions that Philly has backed off the supposed follow-up deal with the Brewers, which was Lieber for Mench and Turnbow. I wonder if Hendry can send Jones and Eyre to Philly for Lieber and prospects.
  8. Me either, though they would still need a right-handed option to occasionally play CF, which is probablly where the experimental options come in (bring up Pie, tryout Theriot, etc.)
  9. That's all the Red Sox want? We could do better than that. Jacque, Eyre and Player That's not a better offer. Teams are as equally concerned about number of years controlled as they are production and salary. The Mariners control Jones for many years to come, which is key.
  10. I still don't understand how the Nats justified giving starts to guys like Ramon Ortiz and Pedro Astacio when Rauch most likely could have outperformed both of them as a starter. Frank Robinson.

  12. I don't think so. It appears Hendry is keen on getting a left-handed hitting CF and the options out there are slim.
  13. I know you must have posted Pie at least a dozen times, and clearly that's your preference, but I haven't read anything that shows me he will get a real shot at starting with the club in 2007. I just don't know how realistic it is at this point.
  14. There have already been numerous threads on various individual players, but I thought a summary thread of all CF options that have surfaced during the winter meetings might be helpful to promote discussion. These are all the options I have read thus far from assorted media reports: Cubs looking into availability of Ryan Church (Washington Post) Cubs talking to Kenny Lofton (out of Dallas) Cubs inquired about Aaron Rowand (Sun-Times article) Additionally, we've heard rumors about Cubs grooming in-house options for 1-year usage at CF, such as J. Jones, or even Theriot and Patterson the younger. Fans have promoted exploring Baldelli and A. Jones, among others. What do you think is most likely? What do you prefer?
  15. TheDude to Hendry's defense, that's something Jim can count on when he's left with a $120 million pile of mediocrity next year. The argument has always been that Jim is bad at his job. He shows that in many ways. The argument only conveniently becomes that blanket generic statement when the individual details don't point to that for every transaction.
  16. No, they don't. when Estes was 30, his ERA had already ballooned to 5.73 - that was the year he was with Chicago, and his age 29 year was 5.10. Lilly is a far better player. Estes has only the NL West to thank for having career numbers that sniff the back-end of Lilly's AL East numbers.
  17. Some people need a scapegoat for every situation. The GMs job is to acquire good players for the team. It's not scapegoating to complain when your GM doesn't acquire good players for the team. The argument when Hendry didn't try to acquire Giles in previous years (similar in that location played a part on destination) was centered on the fact he didn't try, more so than he didn't acquire him. Many people would not have been so hard on Hendry had he showed interest in that type of player. Now that Hendry tries, showing interest in the type of player needed, the argument shifts to bring equal blame to him. It appears that Schmidt turned down length in years for more upfront money and desired location, which isn't too smart if money is the bottom line, because it's not likely 3 years fromnow he'll get and offer for 13+. I guess in his case, like Giles, money wasn't the bottom line.
  18. Funny that's exactly what my friend said about Lilly but I think Lilly is better than that. It's not even close. The most they have in common is that their left-handed. Do you bother to look stuff up? Career Averages Lilly Estes 184 203 IP 99 90 ERA+ 4.6 4.7 ERA 75 104 BB 157 148 SO 1.3 1.5 WHIP Pretty close, but Lilly looks marginally better. Career numbers are not the context I was thinking with my remarks. Why would career numbers make any difference concerning the two players right now? Should anyone signing Maddux use his career numbers for comparison against any other player? I'm thinking right now, as in 2-year or 3-year splits. Estes can't touch Lilly no matter what spin you want to add.
  19. I thought Gonzalez was going to the Cardinals? I wish he was; he's not good any more. He did put out 52 doubles last year, good for a tie for 2nd in MLB.

  21. Pretty much everything Jim has done this winter has given me, and a lot of others, that he is determined to trade Jones. Except that he hasn't done or said anything with respect to Jones other than cryptic GM-speak. This is a media driven issue alone. No it isn't. He signed a guy to play Jones's position. He's said he tries to accomodate players who request trades, and insinuated that he knows Jacque doesn't want to be here. He's talked about getting other LH OF help, and has stated repeatedly that Murton will remain. And there are other baseball people out there saying that Jim seems intent on dealing Jones. That's not media driven. Just because he didn't come out and say, "I am going to trade Jacque Jones this winter" doesn't mean he hasn't done or said anything with respect to Jones being dealt. It seems pretty clear to me Jones won't be back. The odds are heavily in the favor of a trade. You ignored the fact that Hendry noted Jones would CF. That negates your two points regarding Soriano and Murton. The "other baseball people" I presume are peple covering the winter meetings...in other words media. So that is each of your points refuted. I have no issues with people speculating Jones will be traded. I think it is a possibility. But this idea that he must go is media-driven.

  23. sounds like Schmidt is off the table. :( Nothing in either of those articles gives any indication at all that Schmidt is off the table.
  24. That's what happens when you have just under 30% of your starts over the last three years come against the Yankees and the Red Sox.
