BN just wrote about that in the same way. I don't love their opinions, but we also have to remember that Cerami works there and he's been pretty on it. He reports in this way, the quiet winks and nods and comments, so I do think that this is probably coming from a decent place.

His footwork needs a lot of help still too. It's not just that he's a bad framer, he's awkward. It could get there! But his shape kind of makes it more risky. Also, just leaving this here... If he's a catcher that's more than acceptable! As a DH?

Probably not. Maybe some time in September. He doesn't help an OF that's already heavily LHH and he won't add defense or base running. As well, I expect lots of K's on his initial callup. Maybe we see him on the bench in September, but more likely, he hangs out in Iowa. It won't kill him.

It'd be real embarrassing if someone wrote a long article right around that time period advocating for him only for him to tank his value. Real embarassing.

Yep. If the Cubs really are clutching Ballesteros, it's probably because they value him more than others, likely because they believe in the defense. But it could also be the kind of report where the Cubs are pretending it's a bigger deal for them to add him to a deal. When they're totally cool with eventually doing it.

No. What that almost assuredly tells you is that internally, they believe in Ballesteros catching ability. And if they think he's a catcher, he's probably the best prospect in the system. If he's a DH, you can make arguments for Long as a similar type.

I think where I'll be at it is this: I think the 2025 Cubs will be fine if they finish with a RH bat and Kelly. At the same time, I will feel like a bit of a missed opportunity in that the Cubs probably do need to start converting some. So I'll be fine, but a little disappointed.

I'm about here with it as well. The Cubs need to convert some prospects into talent and the only way it happens is by really going out and getting a non-rental somewhere.

I don't think there's a concern there will be at least one more P and a hitter. I think worst case this will be a "fine" deadline. Will also add I think Soroka is better than Kittredge, but I am actually pretty cool with both. That's more semantics though. But that said, I do think the Cubs should be a little irrational and get a controlled SP if they can. Even if it's a bit of an overpay.

Not to be the downer, but this does have a somewhat of a feel of those recent deadlines where you thought the Cubs were going to do a big thing on the last day and then didn't. The hope is that this one materializes.

6pm est is the deadline. As always there may be trades that are announced afterwards.

Ballesteros could have lots of routes 1. Don't resign Tucker and he's the DH 2. Trade Happ or Suzuki in their last year of their deals - not impossible even with NTC - Ballesteros DH 3. PCA didn't start with the MLB roster in 2024 he got 410 PAs Worst case he will be 22 years old. If he got another 200 PA's in Iowa he won't die.

I would guess, and just guessing if the Cubs did that Horton would be there to save real prospect capital. Maybe Horton, Caissie and then keep the rest of your Wiggins, Rojas, Alcantara, Ballesteros group.

Gore has thrown 133, and 166 innings the last two years. He probably has 10-11 starts left in 2025 regular season. Season velo is 95.3and last 5 was 95.1. There's nothing there that suggests he can't push to 175 innings right now.

No one needs to remind me what Horton could be. I've been the highest person on Horton since draft day when everyone hated it. But the Cubs will probably have to get a little irrational to get the guy they want. And if you traded Horton, but kept Wiggins, I think you can find a way where the pain isn't as bad. That also depends on how the Cubs internally view Wiggins vs Horton, too. There's lots of things here. I'm just saying, there's a world it makes sense even if it hurts to say it.

I'm going to play devils advocate here for a moment and please remember I'm the Cade Guy. You can make an argument where trading him and getting Gore can work. Youd *have* to keep Wiggins. But let's say you expect to shutdown Horton anyways, so for 2025 purposes, you're not losing a ton of additional on field value. Next year, you get Steele back, have a stable of young back end types like Assad, Birdsell, Sanders, maybe Wicks, and then Wiggins comes up 2026 mid-year and does the Horton thing if/when an injury bites. You cannot do Shaw/Horton. But I can see a world where Horton could make sense. Which hurts me to type, but realistically, it's there.
