  1. It's most important for setting advertising prices and revenues. The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched events every year, which is why the NFL is allowed to set obscene prices for advertisers to buy spots during commercials. The higher rated a show is, the more money it can bring in because the broadcasters can charge higher prices for it. If this trend keeps up, they'll make less money off of broadcasting the Cubs.

  3. 52 has been kinda underwhelming so far. I like where some stories are going, but other things...eh.
  4. See, I heard the mood swings/animated/hyper-competitive thing for both, but it made no sense since that's something that is easy to talk about in public when it comes to sports. When BA and other draft publications say there aren't problems, but won't disclose them...that sounds suspicious. The steroids allegation is plausible under that scenario. That's something that would scare teams away, even if it were an unfounded rumor. Heck, it would be enough to really hurt a guy's reputation. The current climate for that sort of thing is incredibly negative; if a team drafted a guy who it turns out was a steroid user, they'd catch plenty of unwanted flack and the guy would get plenty of bad publicity. If he did them, I hope he cleans himself up and makes a good career for himself. If that's a malicious and wrong rumor, I wish shame on whoever decided to make it up and start spreading it.
  5. wasn't there a managerial change too that started the 'stros turnaround...I thought that was how garner got the job... That was in 2004.
  6. My guess is they probably aren't sac bunting enough, or aren't gritting their teeth hard enough. They need more gritty gamer types. Total Plate Appearances 18) Oakland 1798 29) Chicago Cubs 1677 ABs 16) Oakland 1585 29) Chicago Cubs 1522 BBs 5) Oakland 183 30) Chicago Cubs 116 % of Walks Taken Oakland: 10.2% Chicago: 6.9% OBP 22) Oakland .328 30) Chicago Cubs .301 Batting Average 27) Oakland .246 28) Chicago Cubs .245 Runs 22) Oakland 211 30) Chicago Cubs 167 If the Cubs had as many PAs as Oakland, they'd be projected as having ~179 runs. If the A's had as many PAs as Chicago, they'd be projected as having ~197 runs. They have comparable BAs...yet Oakland walks more and has more runs. I'm seeing a correlation going on here. It helps to have a good BA, that much is obvious. But if one team gets more baserunners than the other, yet both have similar BAs, guess which team scores more runs?
  7. Rowell -Plays SS, but has a large enough body that he'll likely be moved to 3B or OF, seeing as how his arm is above average. -Terrific power that rates 70 on the 20-80 scale. -Smooth swing. -Left handed hitter. -Pretty good at spraying the ball around the field. -How his power will translate into game situations is going to be key. -Good idea of the strike zone, not afraid to take a walk. Snider -Large body, played RB in high school and would have transitioned to LB in college. -Listed as 6' 220, but is closer to 240. -Left handed hitter. -Terrific swing, great bat speed, good use of his wrists and hands. -Plenty of power to go around. -Hangs well against lefties for some one his age. -Classy guy, great work ethic, helps out in the community, and has good grades. -Speed isn't all that great, neither his arm. Probably ends up at 1B or in LF. Conger -Had defensive issues at C last year, but has improved a good deal this year to about average. -Very good arm strength, wants to keep improving behind the dish. -Terrific power, makes good contact. -Comparable to Daric Barton with less pure hitting and more power. -Might be moved to 1B or OF if he has problems sticking behind the dish. -Not considered especially patient, needs to work on his idea of the strike zone.
  8. Yeowza. I can see now why people have been keeping quiet about it if that is indeed the case. Is it a rumor or is there some credibility to it?
  9. For those of you draftniks, Kyle Drabek and Kasey Kiker are two guys in this year's draft who are potential first round pitchers. Drabek has two terrific pitches and projects pretty well at SS. Kiker has a pretty strong body and projects nicely as a power reliever (although there are concerns about his mechanics). Yet, both have makeup issues that people have been tiptoeing around. Apparently the issues are bad enough that some teams refuse to draft them. I find this odd considering that last year, Clay Buchholz had a well-publicized incident in which he stole laptops, and a few years ago, Lastings Milledge had allegations of sleeping with a minor. It'd be one thing if scouts and publications didn't publically discuss these things about high school kids...but that's not the case. So, does anyone know what the heck is going on with those guys? Are there unconfirmed rumors about them? Did these guys do something so bad that it can't be discussed without totally wrecking their reputations? What's the story?
  10. Little under a year after the Angels signed him, he's called up. Not bad.
  11. Staying as far away from the idiots who coach this team as possible, thank Kent.
  12. Veal's doing his best Zambrano imitation through 4.
  13. If Joe had written this in a sarcastic tone, he would have been dead on.
  14. I think he is confused by city smells. That's what my gut tells me. The ivory still scares him.
  15. Clutchier hitting.
  16. This team keeps finding new and interesting ways of losing, huh?
  17. for what? 95 losses instead of 100? Nah, the Cubs need him to have value when the trading deadline comes around.
  18. That smiley looks too happy for it to be used for madness/frustration. is better.
