  1. Nice no-call, refs.
  2. Let's hear it for second chances!
  3. Oh really? So it took about 1 week of ST for the whole "Prior is our 5th starter" thing to be thrown to the 4 winds ;) There's a joke in here about Lou Piniella being full of hot air or Jason Marquis blowing in this statement, but I've said enough. :)
  4. Aaaaaaaaaaand down goes Pittsburgh.
  5. I hadn't paid much attention to Jeff Green until recently, when NBAdraft.net had him going to the Bulls at 10. He's pretty darn good. The man will be a quality SF at the NBA level.
  6. You know, if Georgetown weren't sloppy and could consistently hit FTs, they'd be a Top 5 team with ease. There's plenty of talent and size to go around, but yeesh to the bad decision-making.
  7. QFT. 8-)
  8. As much as it pains me to say it, David Eckstein and Juan Uribe are much better hitters than Cesar Izturis. The only thing keeping Cesar Izturis from Neifi Perez levels of putridity is the fact that he's a very good defensive SS. This team can win with someone like Izturis, but his terrible bat makes it more difficult. A SS who is even an average hitter would make this offense a lot better.
  9. Milb.com just became my favorite website. They're doing weekly reports on college and HS players, complete with brief scouting reports for the highlighted players. This Week Last Week Week Before Last
  10. Blanco has also had the luxury of being the primary catcher for Carlos Zambrano and Greg Maddux during that time. You can't make the argument in one sentence that rookie pitchers artificially inflated everyone's ERA and then come right back and say that Blanco's games have had a lower ERA while with the Cubs without mentioning that fact. Face it, if you catch better pitchers, your CERA will be pretty darn good. Addressing some of the other ideas in this thread, the Cubs already have a number of potential regulars on this team who will be offensive liabilities. Asking this team to play Blanco every day over Barrett simply because Barrett is inadequate defensively would insert one more terrible bat in the lineup. Soto might have nice OBP numbers, but his offensive potential is significantly lower than Barrett in any given year. If you're going to replace Barrett, find someone who either won't be an abyss of offensive putridity or who isn't likely to be on the decline, like Ivan Rodriguez. The hope is that Wieters will be available and could stick at catcher, but I really have doubts that a guy comparable in size to Adam Dunn would be able to stick behind the dish.
  11. Thanks, Todd. Todd Walker is the gift that just keeps on giving. Who did the Cubs get for him again? Jose Ceda, who is one of the more intriguing pitching prospects in the Cubs' system. :D
  12. 2006: 29th in OBP, 28th in Runs 2005: 20th in OBP, 20th in Runs 2004: 22nd in OBP, 16th in Runs 2003: 24th in OBP, 20th in Runs Something tells me pitching (namely relying on Wood and Prior) hasn't been the only major problem this team has had over the past four years.
  13. Ask and ye shall receive: http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/9696/thisthreadrockstk2.jpg
  14. Given the ungodly number of gold gloves he's racked up over his career, I have a hard time seeing this go to someone other than Maddux.
  15. Thank Kent. Some of the discussion on this board lately has been borderline ridiculous.
  16. Raffy Palmeiro for 1B!
  17. If Marquis can come through in the clutch in a late September game akin to Estes that helps us win the division, I'll take back some of the bad thoughts I've had about him. I'd prefer that Marquis not suck for the rest of the season like Estes did in 2003. :D Let's face it, if the Cubs had a fifth starter in 2003 worth his salt, September would have been a much easier month on Cubs fans.
  18. It is true in any country that rabidly follows any sport. However, that doesn't make it any easier on athletes. Seeing it and experiencing it are two entirely different things.
  19. My respect for Tavarez just shot up. As crazy as he is, I have to hand it to guys like him. It's rough coming to a new country in front of rabid fans who love you one day and want your head the next, you know? I think it's positive for Pie to have Soriano as a BFF for this reason. It's already tough for minor leaguers to get used to the insane amounts of travel and wear & tear your body takes over the course of a season. But when you come from another country, grew up in rough conditions, and suddenly are making plenty of money, it can be very easy to get swallowed up in some bad things. Also, if they each have a half of a BFF necklace, I'll lol.
  20. Cubs or non-Cubs? You want guys who are talented or just anyone in general?
  21. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! *Shudders at the thought of Ponson stuffed into a Cubs uniform.*
  22. While it is an honor to receive MVP votes, it is not the best item to use when justifying that side of the Grudz/Bobby Hill argument. Much like the Gold Glove isn't exactly a great hallmark of defensive prowess, MVP votes are not indicative of a player's worth.
  23. I'm not so sure of that. Didn't Grudz get a vote or two for the NL MVP that year? So did Russ Ortiz (complete with 3.81 ERA), what's your point?
