  1. If Marquis can come through in the clutch in a late September game akin to Estes that helps us win the division, I'll take back some of the bad thoughts I've had about him. I'd prefer that Marquis not suck for the rest of the season like Estes did in 2003. :D Let's face it, if the Cubs had a fifth starter in 2003 worth his salt, September would have been a much easier month on Cubs fans.
  2. It is true in any country that rabidly follows any sport. However, that doesn't make it any easier on athletes. Seeing it and experiencing it are two entirely different things.
  3. My respect for Tavarez just shot up. As crazy as he is, I have to hand it to guys like him. It's rough coming to a new country in front of rabid fans who love you one day and want your head the next, you know? I think it's positive for Pie to have Soriano as a BFF for this reason. It's already tough for minor leaguers to get used to the insane amounts of travel and wear & tear your body takes over the course of a season. But when you come from another country, grew up in rough conditions, and suddenly are making plenty of money, it can be very easy to get swallowed up in some bad things. Also, if they each have a half of a BFF necklace, I'll lol.
  4. Cubs or non-Cubs? You want guys who are talented or just anyone in general?
  5. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! *Shudders at the thought of Ponson stuffed into a Cubs uniform.*
  6. While it is an honor to receive MVP votes, it is not the best item to use when justifying that side of the Grudz/Bobby Hill argument. Much like the Gold Glove isn't exactly a great hallmark of defensive prowess, MVP votes are not indicative of a player's worth.
  7. I'm not so sure of that. Didn't Grudz get a vote or two for the NL MVP that year? So did Russ Ortiz (complete with 3.81 ERA), what's your point?
  8. This argument reminds me of an article I saw on Hardball Times not too long ago.
  9. I have to disagree. Prior healthy and pitching well (by his stardards) is the best starter on this team. I think he meant Hill was the third best starter on the team in that case.
  10. Apparently the Cubs' AAA pitching coach (I think Alan Dunn?) got really pissed off at Larry Rothschild over the way Rothschild handled Rich Hill. Word is Rothschild backed off Hill when he came up for his second go-round last season. While this isn't to say that Hill was not at fault for his struggles, it's a mistake to think those two categories are mutually exclusive.
  11. Playing in the background was the Benny Hill theme.
  12. Well, that's all the justification I need. Let's trade Zambrano!
  13. Was it PFT's Chicago Mole who reported this? If so, did he overhear it in an airport bar where he saw someone who looked suspiciously like Jerry Angelo talking on his cell phone to Ted Phillips about how much he wishes he signed Nick Saban?
  14. Is he 12 again? Holy crap.
  15. Unless he's still going on about his ten year plan. ;)
  16. Hey, somebody's gotta be the new whipping boy.
  17. Looks like the Phillie's are going with the dreaded "All Catcher lineup", rarely used in contemporary baseball. Though this alignment leaves many areas of the field open, it provides stellar defense against pop fouls. Plus it confuses the heck out of batters! ;)
  18. This DID happen yesterday, after all! She must be a demon in the sack. ;)
  19. Wieter's problem behind the dish comes from the fact that he's freaking huge at 6'5 230 pounds. Compare that to Adam Dunn, who is 6'6 and 240 pounds. Wieters also has a pretty darn good arm, considering he's Georgia Tech's closer and has been clocked in the high 90s in the past. He might have difficulty behind the dish when it comes to catch and throw, blocking pitches, and so on. He's agile enough to handle a move a corner infield spot or corner outfield spot and his bat would be a plus at any of those positions. The high school ranks should be problematic. Guys like Matt Harvey, Justin Jackson, Michael Burgess, and Rick Porcello are talented enough to be Top 5 picks, but we'll see where they end up production-wise.
  20. I like this deal a little better now. ;)
  21. Nothing to get too particularly excited or upset about. Can't say this surprised me all too much.
  22. While in hindsight, that might appear to be a deal which was not particularly comparable to some of the proposed deals we've been throwing around for Zambrano, Garcia and Guillen were Top 100 prospects at the time, with both producing quite well in AAA in 1998. RJ was also 34/35 in that season. Believe me, the Cubs can get a comparable, if not better, package for Zambrano. 25/26 year old aces with a history of success are incredibly rare on the trade market. Like I said, any team in contention that gets Zambrano will be punching a playoff ticket. Not only that, they will likely become the favorite to make the World Series.
  23. It was also a three team deal involving Octavio Dotel.
