  1. I know this is The Onion, but how awesome would it be if chariot racing returned to the Olympics? Link
  2. I like. I'd like to see the success rate of amateur pitchers with first round talent who fell in the draft because of injury concerns. Hendry seemed to target a number of those kinds of guys in this year's draft (Carpenter, Shafer, and Wilson most notably) and I have to wonder how often those guys overcome their injury problems and make it to the majors with some success. I remember reading somewhere that those kinds of pitchers have been getting snapped up by budget-conscious teams with more frequency as of late, so perhaps there is something to targeting those kinds of players.

  4. Sometimes, it's better to be lucky than good.
  5. This has been a painful game to watch.
  6. Might want to re-do that pick, burnt.
  7. The thing is, the Brewers pretty much have an assembly line of 1B/LF types who can mash the heck out of the ball. Fielder, Braun, LaPorta, and Gamel can all rake. I wouldn't be surprised to see Brett Lawrie join this group in three years if he can't stick at C or 3B. If the Brewers end up trading Fielder away, they can replace him with someone younger, cheaper, and slightly less productive without the weight issues.
  8. Boras is great for baseball. I tend to agree with this position. If baseball teams are willing to pay through the nose for these players, then I say good on Boras for getting top dollar for his clients. However, when Boras' strategies backfire and it puts his client in a bad position, such as Matt Harrington (whose Wikipedia page looks like it was made by a family member), then I tend to think he's overreaching and getting a bit too greedy.
  9. Hoffpauir is not the answer, people. His recent hot streak has been nice and I'm rooting for the guy to do well, but Lee has provided his usual excellent defense and has managed to post above average offensive numbers. Hoffpauir has put up his numbers against AAA pitchers in bandboxes. Lee needs to be moved down in the order, but to think the Cubs should bench him in favor of Hoffpauir is lunacy. Lee could use a few days off here and there, but I think that should be more for rest than anything else.

  11. I'll laugh when he gets a job managing some poor American League team after the Reds fire him. Seattle looks about right.
  12. Considering this is the second to last round, I'll take... WR Robert Meachem, NO
  13. i doubt it. he's not a great sprinter; he pretty much always has to come from behind in the 100 fly (which scares me, he's going to have to go 50.5 or under to win tomorrow morning, i think). he's a great mid-distance swimmer and i think he could be great at distance if he worked on it, but the long, lean body generally does not lend itself as well to sprinting. those are usually the shorter, more muscular swimmers. plus, phelps works too hard to be a sprinter. but i thought that the greatest sprinters of all time were rather tall. Phelps' lower body is not proportional to his upper body. His legs are actually on the short side. That would really hurt him when it comes to strides.
  14. I was kind of hoping the Cubs would draft him. He's got a heck of an upside, despite being a bit of a headcase. If he spurns the Yankees, ouch.

  16. In all my years, I never, ever, ever would have guessed Canada produced a guy named Keith Beavers.
  17. Marmol's a former catcher. He can handle himself at the plate. :D

  20. For his next trick, Bob Howry will blow a 7 run lead.
  21. That's the scouting report on him going into the season. He's done fine defensively this season though - I'll be surprised if he has to move from the position. I still think his upside is Aramis Ramirez II.
