    They had 86 years of bad mojo. They're due for some good mojo. I just wish they'd send some our way. :( At least they made it to the WS a number of times in those 86 years. Masterson's control is really iffy right now. This inning is about to get ugly for the Red Sox.

    I liked Coleman when I saw him, but he was working with a fastball was in the high 80s, I think touching 90/91 at some points. He had a great feel for pitching, but if he doesn't sharpen his curve and get a better working velocity, I don't see him becoming more than a back end of the rotation starter at best.

    Throw-in, and not a very good one. He's had four seasons where he's spent significant time in AAA. Other teams have had opportunities to get him via the Rule 5 Draft and the Cubs haven't bothered to give him much time in the majors, even as a pinch hitter. His age hurts, too.

    You could... except you can't, because he's never had any serious injuries or shown signs of injury. Some pitchers are freaks of nature and can throw 100+ pitches 90% of the year. Sabathia has been doing it for years in Cleveland. Milwaukee really wasn't doing anything different that wasn't already happening in Cleveland, so the whole "The Brewers are ruining his future" argument is stupid. He's a freak. I'm not so sure about that. He looked terrible in the playoffs, like he had nothing left in the tank. It's possible the guy won't have arm issues in the future, but I'm leery enough to think that a big dollar multi-year contract would not be the best idea for him.

    He doesn't have much power and has iffy patience at the plate. I like how he's young for AA and has produced there, but his peripherals are kind of eh.

    As a Type B, a team can sign him early without having to forfeit any draft picks. It's like the Brewers did with Jason Kendall. Also, point taken on those three, although I think Patterson and Gallagher wouldn't have qualified for the list in terms of playing time with the Cubs had they stayed. That's more of a counterfactual situation, though. Assuming he turned it around in the MWL like he did following his trade to the A's, I think 3 or 4 on my list would be about right.

    If Wood and Dempster aren't back we will have a chance to reload in a hurry. Ditto Howry, who could end up being a Type B. I'm a bit concerned about the lack of names on these Top 10 lists who were drafted after the first round prior to this year. There's only one name consistently on any of these lists that fits that mold in Samardzija. While there's still time for guys like Rundle, Huseby, Thomas, Guyer, etc. to develop and blossom, it's a bit disconcerting.

    Everything after the Top 10 is a mess for me. Most of the quality lies in guys who either are at very low levels, guys with checkered injury histories, or guys whose ceilings aren't particularly noteworthy, although they have a reasonable chance of making the majors. I think there's some promise in this system, but the lack of depth and talent is a bit jarring.

    I have to think the Padres would be looking for something for Peavy along the lines of what the Indians got for Sabathia. Adding Greene to the mix only adds to the players needed to complete it. I'm having difficulty coming up with a comparable package to what the Brewers gave up for CC.

    They have Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, 2 guys that a lot of teams would love to get their hands on, especially one about to embark on a full rebuilding phase. Also, Im thinking that the Pads will try to package Peavy and Khalil Green like the Marlins did with Becket and Mike Lowell, in which if a team wants Peavy, they'l have to take Green as well. Ian Kennedy isn't worth anyone's time. He's a 5th starter. If I am the Padres and I am looking to rebuild, a package involving Cano, Cabrera, Hughes, and a prospect or two for Peavy, Greene(could play 2B), and a prospect isn't looking like that bad of a trade. If that's the case, the Cubs can beat that package. The only worthwhile player in that package is Hughes and, as previously mentioned, the Yankees would be selling low on him.

    The most consistent argument I've ever heard against Santo was that he was a garbage time stat compiler, meaning most of his production came at times when "it didn't matter" or when games were effectively out of hand. In other words...he wasn't clutch. Guh.
