  1. My memory was that Hendry announced the signing of Pawelek during the first day of the draft (I think in the third round?). It was an especially weird situation since, up to that point, Boras HS clients had developed a notorious reputation of going off to college. Most people thought that Pawelek would be one of the hardest signings in that draft for that exact reason. The number of Scott Boras HS clients between A-Rod and the 2005 draft who had signed with the teams that drafted them was impressively low. What was especially disappointing about Pawelek, in my mind, was that he initially lived up to the hype. He posted really promising numbers in the AZ League (56/21 K/BB in 43 IP with 0 HRs allowed) and everyone raved about him (including BA, who named him top prospect in the AZ League that year). Whispers started spreading about him showing up to camp out of shape in 2006, but a decent season in Boise maintained his promise and potential. And then...everything just went to hell. He got hurt after apparently tripping over his Playstation in 2007. He had that whole bizarre passport incident last year and was shut down in August despite being healthy. I can't claim to know what exactly happened to him. Maybe some day we'll get the whole story.
  2. Let's hear it for LaTroy Hawkins, Jacque Jones, Bobby Howry, and Scott Eyre!
  3. may have had something to do with cabrera and do we still think miller is even that good? Considering his history, potential, and lack of major league service time, yes. They're really going to regret trading Maybin, though.
  4. Francisco Rodriguez while Troy Percival was with the Angels immediately comes to mind.
  5. Sucks to be playing against someone on a totally different level than him, I'm guessing. Then again, as the second-best player on his own team he should be used to it. The non-Hansbrough Heels are off to a good start though. yeah griffin is really showing him who's boss, look at this ass kicking Because that matchup is the reason. As it turns out, Hansbrough is neither guarding nor being guarded by Griffin. I'm not pleased with that. I'm going to kill Howie Long. Hey there Nancy, nice truck you have...for a limp-wristed pansy.
  6. Not a bad showing from MSUton. The second half should be fun.
  7. I really can't imagine this decision having that much of a financial impact on him. I realize how contracts these days are working, but if he takes a hit because he is not recording saves, he needs a new agent. If he stays healthy and effective until free agency, I expect him to get a huge contract regardless of saves. Agreed. Plus, Marmol is best used as a fireman, imo. He is the best reliever on this staff and I want him pitching in situations where the game is potentially on the line, even if it is only the 5th or 6th inning.
  8. He's been a potential Top 10 pick every year since he was a Freshman. He'd probably be in the Top 5 this year if he came out. If UConn wins it all this year, the only reason he'd have to stay there is to work on his game and get minutes. I don't know if that would be enough to keep him at UConn. So, more likely than not is my answer.
  9. The refs are letting everyone get away with murder. Holy hell.
  10. Not here. Glad I'm getting the 14 point game versus the tied one... Not tied any more. :D
  11. NBADraft.net has him going #7 overall in 2010. *Shrug*
  12. http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/4194/o3vyouareawesome.gif
  13. Hey, the lead's been cut down to 14! We might actually have a game here!!!!!!!
  14. Moved and merged the topics. I dig this signing.
  15. It's sad when the closer game of the two is the 24 point blowout.
  16. MSU is a lock tonight. Book it. come on, a bill self coached team is always the lock. Tom Izzo scowls in your general direction.
  17. Gus Johnson is wasted on this game.
  18. Bingo. We don't know how often he uses the personal driver. We don't know how often this driver has picked him up after he's gotten smashed at a bar, as opposed to how many times the driver picked him up from a nice restaurant after he had two glasses of wine with dinner. It's very easy to get a DUI these days, even if you have been drinking responsibly. Kentucky was smart for giving him a driver, considering the amount of bad publicity that could go along with Gillispie getting a DUI. I wouldn't be surprised if they continue this practice with the next coach. If it turns out the guy goes out every night and gets plowed, then yeah, that would qualify as an alcohol problem. However, speculating on his alcoholism based on Kentucky assigning a driver to him seems like fumbling in the dark to me.
  19. Cashner will probably be in the minors all season unless he puts up strong numbers in AA or AAA going into September. My guess is that the Cubs will start him out at Daytona in the warmer weather to work out his mechanics and give him quality time in the FSL's pitcher-friendly parks.
  20. No doubt about that. They'll pay what it takes to get a player they want, slot recommendations be damned. After the Gerrit Cole incident, I have to wonder with the Yankees.
  21. Right here, to be exact.
  22. Yeah, I am surprised they even won a game/got into the tournament. Being a Wisconsin resident and getting to see most of their games, this had to be one of their worst/least talented teams in 10+ years. They just are an awful offensive team and marginal defensive team. They don't have 1 guy who you could go to offensively when you needed a basket that you know they could get a good look/shot and have a good chance of making something happen. Their schedule helped a lot in terms of them getting in. I figured they were due for a 9 or 10 seed, so I was surprised to see them get a 12 seed. However, it made some amount of sense when the tournament officials explained that they did it to accommodate their rules for matchups and seedings. A lot of their recruits haven't panned out so well, but I think there's enough talent there to help them make a run next season. Their inconsistency has been their achilles heel, but I think the coaching staff is good enough to help the younger players get past that.
