  4. Why the assumption that Griffey Jr wasn't juicing? I've been debating who, out of everyone that's played baseball since 1985, would be the absolute most devastating name for baseball to have revealed as a steroid user. Junior Griffey would probably be #2 behind Ripken. I'm open to other names and suggestions, though. Jeter? Maddux? Good choices. I was also thinking Pujols and Mo Rivera.

  6. Huh. Iowa's going up against Texas' top prospect in Neftali Feliz. That's gotta suck.
  7. Arthritic knees scare the heck out of me in basketball players.

  10. It looks evasive when he's only doing it in response to hostile questioning. If he's speaking English fine in response to questions which are friendly to him, especially if he is giving answers which are more than 1-2 sentences and require some amount of thought (which he did on a number of occasions), and then turning right around and saying he doesn't understand a hostile question, even if that question is simple and to the point, it most definitely looks bad on his part. People will see that as him intentionally evading hostile questions. Moreover, I really think you're not giving Sammy's English skills enough credit. The guy was fluent. He may have spoken with a heavy accent, but he spoke English quite well.
  11. It makes more sense for Dylan Johnston to stay in Mesa and see how he progresses, but when have the powers that be ever made a decision that makes sense? Dylan is already listed as an outfielder on the roster on the Boise site ( but then again, so is Ryan Sontag....and he is a pitcher now) It also lists some players who have been released, such as Harol Tolentino. That roster is not accurate.
  12. He is? Certainly spoke it well enough to do hundreds of interviews about hitting HRs with Big Mac in 1998. I have the "Home Run Chase" VHS at home if you want me to send it to you. Big difference between some relatively inconsequential interviews with sports media and speaking in front of government officials in the situation he was in. I speak Spanish very fluently, far better than Sammy speaks English, and even I'd feel extremely uncomfortable put into a similar situation in a Spanish speaking country. I always got the impression that he'd always have problems speaking and understanding English whenever he was in front of hostile reporters and members of Congress. It seemed really convenient, you know? When he had people who were tossing him softballs, he'd speak English as well as anyone. But once the tides turned, suddenly he couldn't understand or speak it. Granted, it's a very good way to make sure you don't misspeak. However, on the other hand, it can make someone come off as being very evasive.
  13. 42 at bats at AA: .310/.348/.500/.848, 3 BB, 7 K. Surprisingly not bad. It's the old "either he hits with few walks or he walks with few hits" song and dance all over again, though. I really wish he could find a happy medium between the two ends of the spectrum. Those Jacque Jones comparisons keep looking better and better as the days go on, though.

  16. Time for groundless projections on who'll be in Boise and Mesa! We might see Matt Cerda and Hak Ju Lee in Boise, although I think Cerda is going to stay in Mesa to work on catching and that Lee is going to stay down in Mesa for the time being to catch up on his development after recovering from Tommy John.

  21. have there been any reports about huseby's stuff as a reliever? I saw him earlier in the season and wasn't that impressed. His FB sat in the upper 80s (touched 90/91 on a few occasions) and he had a decent breaking pitch (looked like a curveball from the break). Granted, when I saw him, it was when the weather was cold and early in the season. He might have improved since then for all I know. I plan on catching a game some time this week (possibly tomorrow for the Quad Cities double header, but it depends on the weather and a few other things), so if I see him, I'll post some updated impressions.
