  1. So you're saying a player who was good in the minors, called up to the majors and struggles and when he's sent back down to the minors and is successful again "just sucks and is a 4A player"? Tell Anthony Rizzo that.
  2. Not giving up on him quite yet. I'm still hoping he solves his vision problem because it would make for an interesting lineup in 2015. Surely you would accept an above average fielding 3rd baseman, 25 HR and .270-280 hitter. You put Bryant in left and that's pretty sweet. It's not a vision problem. It's a can't make contact problem. Which is sort of a vision problem too, but it's not something he didn't have before 2013. He hit .288 with 28 HR in 2012. Nice try.

  4. If we go this route, which I don't think is unrealistic, what would the payroll look like? $70 million (since we probably aren't signing any significant offensive pieces)? I think it's pretty damn unrealistic that is the Cubs 2015 opening day rotation. We are getting an 'ace' this year, Theo has all but said it already. I think its easy to read between the lines some. I believe Plan A will be to sign either Lester or Scherzer ... Plan B involves trading prospects for an 'ace'. I could see both plans put in motion at same time but either way, I'm confident Jake won't be our Opening Day starter. Scherzer? He rejected 6/$144 from the Tigers. No way we pay that much for anyone.
  5. If we go this route, which I don't think is unrealistic, what would the payroll look like? $70 million (since we probably aren't signing any significant offensive pieces)? Don't think there's a chance we come away from the offseason without an ace. Disagree. I don't think the FO will go beyond 5/$120 on anybody. Lester will be 31 next year and he's the only one I'd do that for. I also would add Neil Rameriz to the mix. I think they'll stretch him out in ST and let him start.
  6. Don't forget Neil Rameriz. He's due to come off the 15 day DL. Brandon McCarthy does nothing for me and I think Lester will cost too much. Is Tseng too far away?
  7. Looks like we don't have to send the Marlins anything, but as a good will gesture-send them Edwin Jackson. Unless someone is willing to take on his contract-it's pretty much sunk costs. They get 2 years+ of Edwin, we free up a pitching slot. The Marlins are so desperate for pitching, they're considering bringing back 36-year old Brad Penny.
  8. I agree with Bruce Levine on this one. When the time is right(when Addison Russell has proven himself), the Cubs will trade Castro. The Marlins and Mets would trade some of their young pitching for him and I'd do it. Remember, we need pitching inventory. Bruce mentioned this morning that Castro might feel slighted even being asked to move from ss to another position. Hadn't heard that before and not sure if I agree with it. Either way, I don't think he's here in 2016.
  9. Interesting the Cardinals are doubling down with pitching, rather than acquiring some power in the OF. Holliday is struggling with power, Craig is really struggling, Jay is a punch and judy hitter and Oscar Tavares hasn't figured it out yet. They really miss Beltran.
  10. The Lester to the Dodgers for Kemp rumor is interesting. Wonder how Kemp would feel about going from first to worst. I see a small market for Kurt Suzuki© of the Twins. With A. J. Ellis stumbling, maybe there's interest for the Dodgers.
  11. Give me the cocky ballplayer, with an attitude who can hit like Baez anytime. It's professional baseball, not a popularity contest.
  12. Possibly the closest I can recall was what the Yankees did with C/OF's in the 50's and early 60's: Yogi Berra, Elston Howard and Johnny Blanchard. They just had to keep Yogi's bat in the lineup somehow.
  13. Yeah, Neifi, Phil Nevin, Bobby Howry, etc... were their favorites during those WS Hendry years. They haven't gotten over it.
  14. How refreshing to have a FO that is following their plan and not getting sidetracked by signing Chad Fox again or some 30-something friend of Hendry to a longterm no trade contract.
  15. This is a great trade. A #3-4 pitcher and a reclamation project for a wealth of talent back. On Castro, what if the FO thinks that he will never be better than what it is right now. While he's improved at taking pitches he's still not going as long into counts as Theo would like. His fielding is still shady at times, his throws at times are lazy and then there's his short attention span condition. What if their evaluation is: We've had 2 managers try to work with him and the progress has been slow. He just doesn't get it and this is his peak. His trade value to other clubs is as SS and that's what we're selling him as. He's not as a potential CF as what we have in our system and he'd fight the move.
  16. I'm rooting for Olt to make it. No one is pleased with a .150 BA but we're not going anywhere and I say let Bill Mueller work it out with Olt and Lake. I can live with a .260/25HR above average fielding 3rd baseman, as most of the other ML teams can.
  17. Manny sells no Cubs tix. Bill Veeck used to bring Minnie Minoso back once a decade. It was a cute idea, nothing else. Manny sells zero Cubs tix at Wrigley. We have our own alleged steroid user who the team wants nothing to do with. Have a Sammy Sosa Day at the end of the year and we have a sellout.
  18. so they should move him from where they want him to play because "everyone" says he should play the OF? Just repeating what 'experts' have said. You've heard them, I'm sure. If he can handle 3rd, that's great. But if he can't...then start him in the OF now.
  19. Why are they still putting Bryant at 3rd? I thought the concensus was that he'll wind up in a corner OF position. I get it that 3rd is harder to play and if he was destined to stay at 3rd, then he should be there. But that's not what everyone says. I'd put in LF or RF and let him learn those positions.
  20. I'd listen to any interest on EJax. He is a disappointment but why should I be surprised, his entire career shows this inconsistency. Sometimes he's light out and then other times he looks lost. He falls in love with throwing a slider and curve 3-5 times in a row. He was bouncing the ball up there yesterday times and seemed to not get it. Just getting rid of him and his salary is enough return for me.
  21. A few things on Kyle Schwarber which were on The Score Saturday AM: From Stan Zalinsky(sp.) Cubs area scout who scouted Schwarber at IU. One of the best power hitters he's seen in 35 years. A scoreboard changer. Needs work behind the plate with feet position and throwing stance. Smart and great attitude to adjust. Versatile enough to play LF, but thinks he'll stay behind the plate. From Schwarber: Has been told by Cubs(Theo) his primary position will be catching, but play in LF a few games to keep his bat in the lineup. Willing to play anywhere. Isn't a night owl and likes to get his 8-10 hours of sleep. Finds his Cubs teammates to be friendly and fun to play with. Knows that alot of Cubs fans are following him but won't let it go to his head.
  22. except there's a very good chance that taking $100M now is max value There's also a very good chance that either Kaplans number is [expletive] fed to him by the cubs or samardzija wants to get the [expletive] out of here Kapman has no pipeline to the Cubs anymore. When Hendry was here he spoonfed Kapper stories that were just trial balloons. Jed and Theo don't play media favorites and there aren't the leaks(cough) we had before. He just makes up stories to have something to talk about on the radio. EJax makes $13M and Shark can see he's better than him. But he'll also be 30 next year and to commit $16-18M for a number of years, before you see what Baez, Bryant etc.. do up here is silly. Trade him now for a great package and we can move on.
  23. Wood has pitched a pretty good game so far. ARam warming up in the pen. Hope they plan on stretching him out eventually and letting him start games. To my untrained eye, looks like Castro's stance is just a little more closed. The results improving. Art Garfunkle can still bring it.
  24. I heard it, very little new. Jed's surprised with the progress of Kris Bryant. They'll plan on keeping him @AA so he can be with same team and same manager for awhile. They're looking to see how he handles adversity(as everyone does) and then go from there. Nothing on Shark. Team makeup going forward will have veterans(Rizzo and Castro) to help younger players(Baez, Bryant, etc..). A couple experienced SP in minors to serve as backups will be part of that plan. Jed says they have the $$$ to spend now and not depending on signs and new tv deal. Nothing on deals this year. My takeaway is that no one will be rushed up here and that 2015 probably looks the same as this year. Hope this helps.
  25. James Russell to the Braves for Alex Wood.
