  1. TT-here's a Fangraphs article about Shield's 2015 year. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-year-james-shields-was-different/ An interesting point was that he changed his approach(possibly because he had diminished arm strength) or maybe it was dictated from up high. If Bosio felt Shields was on the downhill slide and unfixable even for one year, then I'll pass. But if he's fixable, then I'd ask the Padres what it would take.
  2. I see San Diego is looking to trade James Shields, is it time to revisit him for the Cubs? He's @ 3/$65 right now and it's been said that the Pads would have to send cash also. I wonder what they would say to sending McKinney and another AA for Shields and $15M?
  3. I heard today that the Dodgers payroll and luxury tax exceeded $340M this year and they're committed to bringing that total down to the $225M range. Even though they haven't won a WS in 25+ years a Price contract might not work out under those projections. Price is too rich for the Cardinals. We already have a big contract with Lester and once the Price talks go beyond 5 years and about $30M, I think I'd push back from the table.
  4. I would assume it would be one of those glass backed studios for the rubes to stare at with the new network. I'd pay money to throw stuff at Kaplan. he's totally gonna be the face of that network isn't he? sigh. Oh please NO! Since we're at least 3 years before the Cubs network is up and running, Kappie will be 58+(didn't you see he wanted his recent birthday to be the lead story on CSN) and getting long in the tooth. Plus, he'd have to give up his Sportstalk gig. I just hope he stays away from The Score and stays in the witness protection program(ESPN 1000). My understanding is that it will be studio setup and give access to FO and players for interviews. The Cardinals have their tv broadcast operations across the street in LF, in their ballpark village complex. Doesn't Boston have a similar setup?
  5. Just to clear up a couple of things...Lou Brock was not always batting leadoff. When the Cardinals had Curt Flood for a number of years(leading off), Brock batted 2nd. Brock was an average fielder and had surprising power at times. He once hit a HR to dead CF at the Polo Grounds. Agree with Tim, Dernier was average at the plate and in the field. The questions on Jason Heyward are do the Cubs see him as a RF or CF, as a leadoff hitter or 5-6 slot? Great fielder in RF and probably in CF. Do you think he'll develop the power to justify playing RF? You've got Soler who's gonna be good for 25-30 HR and yes I know he's a bad fielder, but does that justify paying Heyward $175M? If you see Heyward as a CF/leadoff batter, are you factoring in his speed will diminish playing CF every day? Besides, I don't think you want him trying to steal 30-40 bases with his salary. I don't see Heyward as a leadoff guy or developing a sudden power stroke.
  6. I'm not a fan of Blackmon. He's only a 2.0-2.5 win player (by both standards) and doesn't play great defense in center, and his overall offensive numbers aren't that impressive even with the Coors effect. If anything Hendricks alone is an overpay for his services when you take age and team control into consideration, IMO. The problem is that every CF we mention has some issues that make it not a perfect fit. From too expensive (Heyward, Fowler, Gardner) to injury affected (Eaton, Span) to mediocre (Blackmon, Maybin). I've accepted the idea that we have enough firepower offensively that we can deal with a mediocre (offensively) CF for a year or two until Almora/McKinney/Happ are ready. I know the list has old and cranky CF, then there's Heyward and Upton. Maybe too rich for my blood. My pitching targets via trade are Quintana, Matz and now(at least kick the tires) Shelby Miller. If we can solve CF internally, that leaves plenty of pieces(Castro, Hendricks, etc..) to get two young cost-controlled SP.
  7. Could Albert Almora be the default candidate? I've never seen him play, but most reports indicate he is a plus CF defender. The question is his bat and would the Cubs be rushing him in 2016. But this FO isn't afraid of taking chances with rookies being thrust into the starting lineup. Heyward will get a lot of $$$ and I'm underwhelmed by most available CF. Besides, if we do get another CF, it certainly blocks Almora's progress. Would Theo/Jed be willing to take another chance on a kid?
  8. He can want whatever he desires. He's not getting Price money. Hey, Tim..I hope Theo took him to Aurelio's on 59 and had the salt lick deep dish.
  9. What would it take to get Charlie Blackmon from the Rox? Hendricks, Alcantra and 2 minor league pitchers seems doable.
  10. I'll pass on him. He's gonna want Price money because he's spent the last 3 years waiting for this. He's a #3 at best and could be #4 with the Cubs.
  11. With the new deal with Pepsi, how long before there is a Pepsi Porch in the bleachers?
  12. I'll pass on Eaton. His defense was terrible and he seems to make bad decisions on the field. I also wonder if he's not the best clubhouse person for a team. He comes across in interviews as a bit of a 'me guy'.
  13. I think Castro is the trade chip to get a SP. Both the WSox and Mets need a 2nd baseman and a shortstop. I would target Jose Quintana(WSox) or Steven Matz(NYM). I realize if we sign David Price and do this trade we'd be LH-heavy(Lester, Price and Quintana/Matz) but our rotation would be a killer-Lester, Price, Arrieta, Quintana/Matz and Hendricks.
  14. This is based on what? Your eye test? Meanwhile, back in the real world, Corey Black has been chosen for the AZL All-Star Game. Keep your day job, ace.
  15. Jed has mentioned two other names that are doing well in Arizona now-Corey Black and David Garner. Corey is making LH miss. Garner apparently has mid-90's fastball and hard slider. I wonder if anyone has seen him? Hate to see Strop back and I wonder if they'd ever move Neil Rameriz back into SP discussion.
  16. Andre Dawson will throw out the first pitch for Game #5 of the NLCS(if necessary) on Thursday. Andre is recovering from Rotator cuff surgery.
  17. Do you mean emailing the teams and asking if they will sell you their tickets? Don't if the teams can actually sell them to you or not. The Cubs gave me 4 tix to the WSox/O's playoffs in Balmer. And a couple of series and didn't have to pay anything. I asked for the tix first and then said at the end that I'd cover any cost(but the teams don't pay for them, so there's no cost to them). The admin. control the tix and timing is everything. The best time would be 3-4 days prior to the game you want. Good luck!
  18. A possible source are the other teams, because they often don't use all of their allotment. Many just turn them back into the league. I'd start with the most distant teams to Chicago and the admin. to the team president and gm.
  19. You're like George Will? How? Will was once on the Orioles board of directors. Nice analogy. As to the first pitch? Sammy, Dutchie Caray or one of Ernie's kids.
  20. My grandfather was at that game. WOW! That must have been something. I believe there may be a film of the at-bat, but I've never seen it. Your grandfather was lucky. I hope that you're safe and dry with that herkin' coming. Spent a lot of time in Ocean City and roaming the boardwalk. Stay safe.
  21. This showboat discussion has been going on for decades. People complained about Willie Mays basket catch in the 50's. And remember that Babe Ruth allegedly pointed to the bleachers and then hit the ball there. That's the ultimate.
  22. What has happened to the quality of QBs in the past 10+ years? There are really good ones and then the drop-off is huge.
  23. [expletive] is that a punchable face with a side of "Can I sell you insurance?" Since his wife works for Malnati's, it must have been tough at home with Papa John's as one of his sponsors.
  24. A possible key phrase 'formerly with Kap and Haugh'. So they're shutting down that show on CSN 9-12AM? It might also mean he's losing his slot on Cubs pre and post next year. Cubs own 1/4 of CSN and Cubs moving to The Score. Why would you have an ESPN guy hosting a Cubs show? And that short-lived column he "wrote" with Fred Mitchell in the TRIB was nothing more than where Hendry was buying his donuts or who ate at Harry Caray's.
  25. Wind blowing out tonight. Just hope Haren can limit the HRs.
